Jermaine Dye Rumors

Perrotto's Latest: Dye, Jenks, Werth, Madson

Let's dig into the latest column from John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus. Perrotto speaks of whispers of a possible White Sox-Mets blockbuster. The Mets would receive Jermaine Dye and Bobby Jenks and the White Sox would receive Fernando Martinez among others. Regarding the Orioles' possible involvement in a trade that would send Jake Peavy to the Cubs, Perrotto says Baltimore seeks Ronny Cedeno and Felix Pie from Chicago. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has spoken to outfielder Jayson Werth and setup man Ryan Madson about contract extensions. Madson might be a tough one as he's represented by Scott Boras (who...   Continue Reading

Javier Vazquez Trade Reactions

The word yesterday evening was that the Braves acquired starter Javier Vazquez and lefty reliever Boone Logan for Tyler Flowers, Brent Lillibridge, Jon Gilmore, and Santos Rodriguez (MLB.com's Mark Bowman confirms the prospects). Look for the trade to become official tommorrow. Reactions to the deal: South Side Sox expects a couple of accompanying moves: the trade of Jermaine Dye for a young starter and the signing of an affordable free agent outfielder. They don't see the White Sox benefitting from the Vazquez trade in 2009, but at least Ozzie cleared out his doghouse. Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune says...   Continue Reading

Braves Rumors: Hampton, Lowe, Burnett

Dave O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has the latest on the Braves in a new blog post. The Braves never intended Mike Hampton to be one of the two front-rotation starters they acquire this winter, so his rejection of their offer doesn't affect their plans much. O'Brien notes that he's heard no indications that the Braves are actively pursuing Derek Lowe. A.J. Burnett seems to be their top target, and it wouldn't be surprising to see the Jake Peavy talks revived at the Winter Meetings. The Braves made trade inquiries on Roy Oswalt and Matt Cain and "haven't received favorable...   Continue Reading

Reds In Trade Talks For Dye?

SUNDAY: A small update from Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune - any deal involving the Reds and Dye is "complicated by financial matters." Not sure why; Dye is only on the hook for $11.5MM next year. SATURDAY: John Fay got Walt Jocketty to admit he's talked to the White Sox (nothing is close). Jocketty's non-denial about the Dye rumor seems to indicate it's accurate. TUESDAY, 5:42pm: MLB.com's Scott Merkin notes that the Mets and Phillies are two of the six teams on Dye's no-trade list. Dye's agent, Bob Bry, has not been contacted by Ken Williams in regard to...   Continue Reading

Perrotto's Latest: Teixeira, Burnett, Wilson

John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus has his Sunday article up. Let's go through it: The Angels may be willing to match the Yankees $140MM offer to CC Sabathia. They won't offer 10 years to Mark Teixeira. If they can't land Teixeira, they will consider Pat Burrell for first base. A.J. Burnett is looking at the Blue Jays, Red Sox, Yankees, Braves, Orioles, and Phillies. The Twins want a left-side infielder for Delmon Young, so they can open a spot for Denard Span in the starting lineup. The Tigers are pursuing Jack Wilson from the Pirates and Matt Treanor from the...   Continue Reading

Mets Rumors: K-Rod, Dye, Vazquez

6:22pm: According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, Minaya has reached out to K-Rod and Fuentes. He says the Mets prefer free agency to trading. We also have a rumor from Joel Sherman of the New York Post. He says the Mets offered Aaron Heilman to the Rockies for Street shortly after Colorado acquired him. The Rox wanted the Mets to add Pedro Feliciano, and the Mets refused. MetsBlog has more insight into the team's plans. 1:33pm: Rounding up today's Mets rumors... On Friday, David Lennon of Newsday said the Mets had received Francisco Rodriguez's medical records. He also had Omar Minaya...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Dye, Burrell, Young

Here's a look at the latest from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rosenthal says the Braves are interested in A.J. Burnett, but you already knew that. Rosenthal believes Trevor Hoffman to the Dodgers "makes sense." The Red Sox apparently have confidence they could trade Mike Lowell if need be, but rival execs believe he'd have to prove his health in spring first. Lowell has two years and $24MM on his deal. The White Sox want a young starter and additional players for right fielder Jermaine Dye. The Mets, Rays, and Phillies are "balking at such a price." Rosenthal learned that...   Continue Reading

White Sox Considering Dye Trade

According to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune, White Sox GM and other front office members are evaluating talent at the Arizona Fall League for a possible Jermaine Dye trade. Dye can block trades to six teams, but Williams has a short list of suitors for him. He is set to earn $11.5MM in '09 and has a $12MM mutual option for '10 with a $1MM buyout. Dye, 35 in January, hit .292/.344/.541 in 645 plate appearances. He plays a below-average right field, according to the plus/minus system. The Rays, Angels, Braves, Mets, Phillies, and Reds could be in the...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Saltalamacchia, White Sox, Ludwick

Links for Sunday... Jarrod Saltalamacchia says playing with Jason Varitek for the Red Sox would be a "dream come true." Ken Davidoff writes that the White Sox would like to trade Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko or Jim Thome. Bernie Miklasz asks whether the Cardinals believe in Ryan Ludwick. According to the Chicago Tribune, 19-year-old Cuban prospect Dayan Viciedo has raw tools and questionable commitment. Yesterday, the Chicago Sun-Times suggested the Sox were interested. Mike Jacobs doesn't expect to walk more than he did last year. Tim Cowlishaw thinks the Rangers should try to sign Manny Ramirez. Phil Rogers says that...   Continue Reading

Braves Rumors: Ludwick, Johnson, Escobar, Francoeur

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has all kinds of Braves info, found in the body and comments of his latest blog post. The Braves have expressed interest in Ryan Ludwick, and the Cardinals would be willing to take Kelly Johnson or Yunel Escobar in return. However, the Braves would probably have to include one of their middle infielders in a Jake Peavy deal and don't want to trade both this winter. Braves GM Frank Wren publicly acknowledged the Peavy trade talks. O'Brien believes a package built around Escobar has a chance. Pitching prospect Tommy Hanson is not available. The...   Continue Reading

Manny Ramirez Rumors: Sunday

As we await an offer from the Dodgers to Manny Ramirez, the notion is often floated that a six year contract for Manny is better suited for an American League team. There he can spend the latter half of his deal, presumably the final years of his career, transitioning to DH. Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune reports that Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi confirmed that he has interest in Manny Ramirez. Rogers quotes Ricciardi: "I've always liked him," Ricciardi told the Toronto Sun. "But obviously getting him and liking him are two different things." We've heard this before here. Rogers...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Sabathia, McLouth, Fuentes

Here's a look at the latest column from Ken Rosenthal. Rosenthal puts odds for various teams to sign C.C. Sabathia, with the Yankees, Angels and Red Sox on top. Rosenthal wonders whether the White Sox will consider trading Jermaine Dye for a starting pitcher, moving Carlos Quentin to right field, and acquiring an athletic center fielder somehow. The goal would be a more athletic club. The Sox will also look to add a second baseman, moving Alexei Ramirez to shortstop. I'm not sure if something as long-term as Orlando Hudson makes sense, though. The Pirates wouldn't trade Nate McLouth for...   Continue Reading

Levine On Fukudome

Interesting stuff from ESPN 1000's Bruce Levine this morning regarding Kosuke Fukudome. The Rangers offered the most money. The White Sox were not outbid - they offered about the same as the Cubs. However, Fukudome did not want to displace Jermaine Dye from right field. Fukudome was just intrigued by the Cubs, and liked the idea of being their first Japanese player   Continue Reading

Jermaine Dye Signs Contract Extension

Another below-market deal for the White Sox - they've signed right fielder Jermaine Dye to a two-year, $22MM contract extension. The deal also includes a mutual option at $12MM for 2010 with a $1MM buyout attached. At one point it seemed Kenny Williams would surely unload both Mark Buehrle and Dye, but instead he's extended the veterans. It's hard not to like the deal. The free agent alternatives - guys like Kosuke Fukudome, Milton Bradley, maybe Geoff Jenkins - are not decidedly better. Fukudome might be able to challenge Dye, but he'll get a larger, riskier contract. The main concern..   Continue Reading

Random Rumors: Erstad, Gagne, Podsednik

Here's a smattering of random rumors. The Twins have tried and failed to acquire Mike Piazza, Jermaine Dye, and Kevin Mench. Instead of Dye, the White Sox offered up 33 year-old outfielder Darin Erstad, he of the .671 OPS. The Twins passed. Eric Gagne will apparently earn Type A status as a free agent, despite pitching only two innings in 2006. Rob Bradford has the details. This was apparently a big factor for the Red Sox in making the deal. The Chicago Sun-Times debunks a rumor that the Cubs are trying to trade for Scott Podsednik. How come I wasn't..   Continue Reading

Failed Trades

Let's take a look at some deals that almost happened yesterday. Kyle Farnsworth for Bob Wickman. This would've been fun, reunions with former teams for both players. However, the Braves wanted the Yankees to pick up all of Farnsworth's salary, apparently. Brian Cashman didn't want to make him go away that badly, and Wickman would probably be a nonfactor back in the AL. Mariners acquire Mark Loretta. Eh. Let's not overstate the abilities of Loretta. It sounds like Tim Purpura wanted some kind of legitimate prospect for him. Rockies send Jeff Baker and others to Tampa Bay for Dan Wheeler...   Continue Reading

White Sox Talking Extension With Dye

It sounds like the White Sox will truly entertain a contract extension for right fielder Jermaine Dye, but only if they get him at a discount price once again. They've paid just $16.75MM for Dye to hit .280/.344/.542 for them over 381 games so far since 2005. Among right fielders, only Vladimir Guerrero has slugged higher from 2005 to present. Dye says "Something can probably get done." Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times believes Dye wants three years, but the White Sox are hesistant to even do two. I get the impression the Sox want to do one year with..   Continue Reading

Dye To Boston May Be Dead; Extension Coming?

UPDATE: Ken Rosenthal's source says the Dye to Boston deal is "seemingly dead." He lists the Cubs, Angels, and D'Backs as possible alternatives. UPDATE 2: Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune still thinks the White Sox might hammer out some kind of two-year extension with Dye. But Kenny Williams has a half hour to see if he can get something better than Pena and Hansen. According to Jayson Stark's sources, the Boston's latest offer for Jermaine Dye was Wily Mo Pena and Craig Hansen. The White Sox want Manny Delcarmen instead; perhaps the Red Sox will be more willing to..   Continue Reading

Yankees Discouraged On Gagne, Cubs Still In?

UPDATE: Peter Abraham confirms that the Yankees seem unlikely for Gagne. He says the Red Sox are offering David Murphy and Kason Gabbard, while the Cubs are still quietly involved. Not sure whether Gagne would have to consent to a trade to the Cubs, but he could be used as their closer without a major uprising. Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Yankees aren't liking their chances to get Eric Gagne. That might mean he's going to the Red Sox, Mets, or Brewers, or that he's staying put. The Mets don't seem likely given some previous reports and the Rangers'..   Continue Reading

Dye Not Asked To Waive No-Trade Yet

The Boston Globe's Gordon Edes spoke to Jermaine Dye's agent, Robert Bry. It seems that certain concessions will have to be made for Dye to approve a trade to Boston - most likely money rather than playing time. However, Bry has yet to be contacted regarding Dye waiving the no-trade clause. That implies that the Red Sox and White Sox still haven't reached an accord. If they are to pull off a Dye trade, it might go down to the wire   Continue Reading

Jermaine Dye Travels With White Sox

This is barely a rumor or anything, but the Tribune's Mark Gonzales notes that Jermaine Dye accompanied the White Sox to New York to play the Yankees. Of course, Dye could hop a plane to Boston pretty easily if a deal goes down   Continue Reading

Tim Brown's Latest

Yahoo's Tim Brown has a new post up; let's take a look. Brown ran all types of starting pitchers by a "large-market assistant," and confirmed that no one good is available. However, Joe Blanton might be switched from "not available" to "available but expensive" on Brown's list. The Diamondbacks have turned their focus to starting pitching. Good luck with that - they should've just pushed harder to get Mark Teixeira. The D'Backs aren't interested in Jermaine Dye, although he would seemingly be a nice fit for them. The Blue Jays are listening to offers for Troy Glaus, but interest is..   Continue Reading

"Pretty Good" Chance Of Red Sox Getting Dye?

UPDATE: Edes says it would be Manny Delcarmen or Justin Masterson as the pitcher. UPDATE 2: Now Edes is saying that the Red Sox are not close to a deal for Dye. They are currently refusing to give up Delcarmen or Masterson. Things are heating up...Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe has a Major League source indicating that the Red Sox have a "pretty good" chance of completing a trade for Jermaine Dye. The White Sox would apparently receive Wily Mo Pena and a pitching prospect other than Jon Lester or Clay Buccholz. That could still leave Michael Bowden, Daniel..   Continue Reading

Filling In The Gaps On The Failed Dye Trade

A few pieces of information were revealed today on the failed three team trade that was to send Jermaine Dye to Boston. According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox would've had to surrender reliever Hideki Okajima in order to get Dye. Whether Okajima would've ended up with the White Sox or the third club is unknown, but Chicago makes the most sense. Okajima has been absurdly good this year - he's allowed five earned runs in 51.2 innings. The unexpected huge success of he and Takashi Saito should cause MLB teams to sign every Japanese reliever..   Continue Reading

Mets and Devil Rays

Ryan McConnell of the New Jersey Star-Ledger posted a run-down of Mets' rumors, mostly old hat by now. Items of note: The Mets are being asked too much for both Chad Cordero and Octavio Dotel, causing them to take another look at Eric Gagne. They are also looking at Matt Thornton (White Sox), Shawn Chacon (Pirates), Chad Bradford (Orioles) and Jon Rauch (Nationals). I think they should go for Chad Bradford, silly contract be damned. We've all heard about second base possibilities in Mark Grudzielanek, Mark Loretta and Luis Castillo. I think that of these candidates, Grudzielanek is the best..   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Dye, Lamb, Jennings

Ken Rosenthal has a new article up. Let's see what's in there beyond the Teixeira stuff. The Angels have a few alternatives to Mark Teixeira in Jermaine Dye and Mike Piazza. However, the team isn't exactly bursting with open outfield/DH spots, especially once Juan Rivera returns. Troy Glaus still makes a ton of sense, but the Blue Jays would want a lot. Probably 2/3 of the Teixeira package. Aside from Mark Loretta, the Padres would also like to acquire Mike Lamb from the Astros. Even tossing aside his awful April, Kevin Kouzmanoff has been about average for his position offensively..   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest Videos: Teixeira, Dye, Garland

Ken Rosenthal has a couple of recent videos up at FOXSports. Check 'em out. Some highlights: The Mark Teixeira talks are at a standstill; the Braves and Angels are reluctant to improve their offers. The Dodgers are said to be out of the picture. Daniels, Schuerholz, Stoneman - which one blinks first? I'll say Daniels; he'll go with Atlanta's best offer. Jermaine Dye is Plan B for the Angels, but as you know the Red Sox still have interest. Jon Garland can be had, but Kenny Williams' price is sky-high. The Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Mets, and Braves all have interest. The..   Continue Reading

Red Sox Continue Discussions For Dye

UPDATE: The Chicago Tribune cites two factors for the non-trade - a disagreement over the players involved and Dye's lack of desire to go to Boston. The Hartford Courant adds that Kenny Williams demanded either Clay Buchholz or Jacoby Ellsbury. UPDATE 2: Could the Phillies be the third team, working Michael Bourn into the mix somehow? Ken Rosenthal has updated this post with some information regarding Boston's ongoing pursuit of Jermaine Dye. Apparently Dye was willing to waive his no-trade clause for some performance bonuses and a guarantee of playing five days a week. A third club would've been needed..   Continue Reading

Angels Out On Teixeira?

According to Mike DiGiovanna and Ben Bolch of the L.A. Times, the Angels are done trying to acquire Mark Teixeira. Casey Kotchman and Joe Saunders were agreed upon. The Angels wanted the Rangers to settle on Terry Evans or Nathan Haynes as the third player. The Rangers, however, wanted one of Brandon Wood, Nick Adenhart, Howie Kendrick, and Ervin Santana. Perhaps there is some middle ground, like a Hank Conger, Sean Rodriguez, or Erick Aybar? The L.A. Times says the door is not completely closed on Teixeira but the Angels won't relent to Jon Daniels' list. Meanwhile, the L.A. Daily..   Continue Reading

Latest On Jermaine Dye

Jermaine Dye stands to be one of the bigger names dealt within the next seven days. He's been hitting well since the All-Star break, but it's only been 48 ABs. Here's the latest on the 33 year-old right fielder. Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times names the Mets, Padres, Dodgers, and Mariners as the top suitors for Dye. In case you were wondering, Dye has not played more than one game in left field in a seasons since 1996. A position switch could be necessary, depending on where he ends up. Bill Madden of the New York Daily News thinks..   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Sexson, Dye

I feel bad for Ken Rosenthal's family, as they won't be seeing much of him until August 1st. He's got another update for us tonight. The Mariners are hoping to unload Richie Sexson; can you blame them? To trade for Sexson now would be insane, even with the Ms eating half of the $14MM he's owed in 2008. He has shown almost no signs of life this season. Rosenthal suggests a Sexson for Matt Morris swap but I'd much rather have Morris. The Brewers have considered the possibility of a Jermaine Dye trade. Kenny Williams apparently wants Derrick Turnbow or..   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Nats After Dunn

Ken Rosenthal's got a new column up; let's dive in. Fun new rumor: the Nationals are pursuing Adam Dunn. Huh? Makes no sense on the surface. Jim Bowden's possible motivation would be to sign Dunn long-term and make him the cornerstone of the franchise. If he fails at that, all would not be lost given the draft pick compensation. Rosenthal says the market for Dunn beyond Washington is a bit foggy - the Twins, Angels, Yankees, Red Sox, and Padres could all get involved but none stand out. Rosenthal adds some color to my recent Nationals post. He mentions that..   Continue Reading

Byrnes Extension Seems Unlikely

It seems unlikely that the Diamondbacks will sign 31 year-old outfielder Eric Byrnes to a contract extension. According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the team won't even approach Juan Pierre's five-year, $45MM deal. And Juan Pierre isn't good. It's just the business reality - the Diamondbacks have way too much outfield talent in their system to give Byrnes anything near what he's worth. He'd probably have to take something like two years, $20MM to remain in Arizona. Earlier I said 4/32 might do it but now I'm thinking even that wouldn't work. I still like him as a..   Continue Reading

McAdam On Red Sox Trade Possibilities

Yesterday, Sean McAdam of The Providence Journal posted an article discussing trade possibilities for the Red Sox. Let's discuss. It seems that the Red Sox will add a bullpen arm despite the fine work of Manny Delcarmen. Apparently they want someone with experience. Eric Gagne doesn't seem likely, nor does Brad Lidge. Instead, Chad Qualls, Dan Wheeler, and maybe Salomon Torres or Scott Linebrink could be acquired. The focus is said to be on the Houston relievers. Wheeler seems like a solid buy-low option. You can add Octavio Dotel to the radar as well. And let's throw Brian Fuentes into..   Continue Reading

Mets Interested In Dye, Relief Help

According to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune, the Mets have interest in White Sox right fielder Jermaine Dye. The Mets had also been monitoring Mark Buehrle, but he's officially off the market now. Gonzales seems to indicate that the Buehrle extension will lessen the Mets' interest in Dye. Dye's been awful this season, perhaps limited by his strained quad. Gonzales's source also mentioned that Omar Minaya is hunting for bullpen help. A few days ago David Lennon noted that the Mets have an eye on Hector Carrasco. The 37 year-old should be traded somewhere by Friday. As far as..   Continue Reading

Padres Failed Trade Talks: Dye, Pie

Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune has a couple of blurbs about inquires trade inquiries made by Padres GM Kevin Towers. The first says that Kenny Williams's asking price for Jermaine Dye a few weeks ago was Khalil Greene and Scott Linebrink. I'm surprised the White Sox would focus on Greene, as him game isn't terribly different from Juan Uribe's. But the Padres don't have anyone else to turn to at shortstop. Greene doesn't reach free agency until after the 2009 season. Anyway, the Padres chose to go with Milton Bradley instead of Dye. Additionally, the Padres asked the..   Continue Reading

Yankees Interested In Buehrle, Dye?

According to George King of the New York Post, the White Sox have been scouting Yankee Double A pitchers Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain. King says to "expect the Yankees to be interested" in Mark Buehrle and Jermaine Dye, which is not the same as saying the Yankees have inquired. Jon Heyman of SI.com has a source saying the White Sox are seeking Kennedy, Chamberlain, or Phil Hughes. Heyman's source also believes that the trio is unavailable. My friend and I were trying to figure out how a Dye acquisition would work for New York, assuming Bobby Abreu is not..   Continue Reading

Latest From Gammons

The man himself, Peter Gammons, had a blog posting on Saturday that I neglected to mention here. Gammons mentions some suitors for Mark Buehrle: the Mets, Cardinals, and Mariners. He draws the Jermaine Dye/Padres connection we have seen in the past. Gammons believes the Astros will move one of Brad Lidge, Dan Wheeler, or Chad Qualls. However, that was written before Lidge hit the DL for a strained oblique. Houston would also love to move Morgan Ensberg, but that's nothing new. The Dodgers are looking for a corner infield slugger, but aren't interested in Troy Glaus or Scott Rolen. Adam..   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest

ESPN's Jayson Stark has his latest Rumblings and Grumblings column up, and it's chock full o' rumors. Stark speaks to one NL exec who thinks any Barry Bonds trade rumor is hogwash. That source believes that there would be no market for him. Personally, I don't buy it. There would only be $8MM or so left on the deal, and as a two-month DH Bonds could make a huge impact on a contender. And he did indicate he'd waive his no-trade clause. Word is that the Mets wouldn't trade Lastings Milledge for an impending free agent - Mark Buehrle included...   Continue Reading

White Sox Trade Winds

Tons of articles today about the plans of Kenny Williams and the Chicago White Sox. Dave van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune speaks of a rumor involving both Mark Buehrle and Jermaine Dye going to the Mets for prospects. This one may have originated on ESPN. Or maybe it's a contortion of Saturday's Newark Star-Ledger rumor. When you see a rumor like that, a red flag should go off. Why would Williams trade both in a package deal? Maximum value is extracted with separate deals. Both van Dyck and Buehrle himself give much credence to this particular trade talk. Buehrle..   Continue Reading

Olney Speculation: Dye To Diamondbacks

Buster Olney had an idea today worth discussing. With the Diamondbacks in the thick of a pennant race and Carlos Quentin pressing, how about acquiring Jermaine Dye from the White Sox as a rental? GMs Josh Byrnes and Kenny Williams seem to get along, matching up on the Javier Vazquez/Chris Young deal in December of '05 and the smaller Alex Cintron trade in spring 2006. Olney believes Williams is ready to trade Dye now. So far the Padres and Dodgers seem to be the main contenders, so keeping Dye away from those clubs would provide an additional benefit. Earlier this..   Continue Reading

Padres, Dodgers Remain Interested In Dye

Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times has a couple of trade rumors for us this morning. Shaikin reiterates Ken Rosenthal's scoop that the Padres and Dodgers have interest in White Sox slugger Jermaine Dye. Shaikin believes the "we won't trade for prospects" edict from Kenny Williams could be stretched if Jonathan Broxton or Chad Billingsley were made available. Those guys may have graduated from prospectdom anyway. Ned Colletti is definitely working the phones for a slugger. Scott Linebrink is named as an available Padre, but I would not expect Kenny Williams to go for that. Throw in Clay Hensley or..   Continue Reading

White Sox Won't Trade For Prospects

White Sox GM Kenny Williams spoke to reporters yesterday, indicating that his phone lines are buzzing but he won't be trading his future free agents for prospects. Talent for talent is the name of the game, though the Jermaine Dye/Bobby Abreu talks have apparently died. The Sox are given a meager 1.7% chance to make the playoffs, according to Baseball Prospectus and PECOTA. And I rounded up. They're in fourth place, seven games back in the AL Central. They're in fifth for the wild card, 4.5 games out. If we try this exercise without PECOTA projections, the chances still seem..   Continue Reading

Abreu For Dye Swap Still Alive

Ken Rosenthal's recent report indicated that the Jermaine Dye for Bobby Abreu talks had cooled over the last week or so. However, Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times indicated today that this deal "has started to take some life." Read the article, and you'll find some quotes from Dye that apparently have annoyed the White Sox. Personally I think his comments are just fine. Basically he says that he will play hard for any team, and that swapping him for another veteran won't ignite the Sox. Who can disagree with that? Would Abreu really spark the Sox? The last time..   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest Video

Ken Rosenthal reeled off a slew of sweet trade rumors in a couple of videos today, which you can watch at FOXSports. Let's discuss. Rosenthal says the Cubs won't trade Carlos Zambrano unless they fall out of contention or the big righty requests a trade. Rosenthal finds neither scenario likely. He says Zambrano still has a good relationship with Jim Hendry, and the Cubs still intend to sign him. The contract remains on hold. Interesting, but not surprising to see that the Cubs are still veering towards this mistake after what we've seen this year. Lots of good Jermaine Dye..   Continue Reading

Ozzie Shoots Down Trade Talk

The always quotable Ozzie Guillen spoke out on recent trade rumors involving Jermaine Dye and Mark Buerhle [Chicago Sun-Times]: ''It's never been talked about,'' Guillen said. ''Maybe Kenny has it in his mind, but he's never said one thing to me about it. I want to go all the way to the end with these guys, see what we can do with these guys. ''I'll be honest with [the media], I'll be honest with the fans, I'll be honest with me. If we get to that point, I'll be the first one to tell people, 'It's going to be hard..   Continue Reading

White Sox Won't Talk Contract With Future Free Agents

The White Sox decided Sunday afternoon that there will be no more contract talks. The declaration surely applies to impending free agents Mark Buehrle, Jermaine Dye, and Tadahito Iguchi. Assuming Carlos Zambrano signs, Buehrle will hit the free agent market as the youngest starting pitcher. He's got a better track record than the somewhat comparable Jason Jennings, but that comes with more mileage. Buehrle has averaged 221 innings over the past six seasons, while Jennings has averaged 180 over the past five. Dye may vie for attention among free agent hitters like Adam Dunn, Alex Rodriguez, Andruw Jones, and Bobby..   Continue Reading

Fallout From Vazquez Extension

From Jermaine Dye's point of view, it may have been odd to see the White Sox negotiate a contract extension with Javier Vazquez on Tuesday. After talking to the club earlier, Dye's agent told the outfielder that the Sox would not talk contract extension with any player before the end of the season. The Daily Herald says he might accept less than Carlos Lee's 6/100 package. I think the Sox might consider 4/60 but he's a long shot to re-sign. And then there's Mark Buehrle, whose situation is more directly related to Vazquez since both are starters. It's pretty clear..   Continue Reading

White Sox Interested In Abreu

Remember that Abreu/Contreras/Dye rumor that was bouncing around last night that couldn't quite graduate from the Unfounded category? We're a little closer to a foundation about this one tonight. A very solid source close to the Phillies tells me that Kenny Williams and the White Sox "love" Bobby Abreu. It's the first I've heard that the club is truly interested in the right fielder. He also mentioned that the Phils would like a pitcher like Jose Contreras. There is some question as to whether the Phils would need to include Gavin Floyd to make an equitable deal. He said that..   Continue Reading
