Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Bradley, Red Sox, Nady, Corcoran, Giants

Let's take a look at what some fans are writing about their favorite teams around the worldwide netweb...

  • Bleed Cubbie Blue says Milton Bradley must go. Bradley is hitting just .237-.355-.379, but the riff with Lou Piniella and off-the-field issues are the real problem.
  • Fire Brand of the American League wonders if shortstop might end up being a position of strength for the Red Sox.
  • River Ave. Blues looks back on the Xavier Nady trade, and says that even though Nady and Damaso Marte are hurt, it was the right move because the Yankees were just one game back of a playoff spot at the time.
  • USS Mariner says it's time for the team to wave goodbye to reliever Roy Corcoran. Considering he's allowed 37 baserunners in just 13.2 IP, can you blame them?
  • McCovey Chronicles muses about trade philosophies for the Giants.

The Rangers had success with Bradley. The team also wants to trade Blalock away if they get the chance. What else would the Cubs have to include in the deal if it's Blalock for Bradley?

I know the Cubs have no use for Blalock but at least his contract is up at the end of the year.

The Cubs fans really think any team would take Bradley, even with salary eaten, and that the Cubs would give up on their investment so soon. I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Bradley was just a terrible signing.. I'm actually still in shock. Anger issues, injuries and inconsistent production for years, and they give him a three year deal? Awful move.

He had a fine '08, but in limited playing time (126 games) and he mainly DH'ed.. I guess the Cubbies are seeing why the Expos, Indians, A's, Padres and Dodgers gave up on the guy.

The word you were looking for is "rift" not "riff" (unless you were trying to say that Bradley's next career is going to be in music, which might not be a bad idea).

Funny how when the Cubbies signed Bradley, you only heard about what a great move it was. Very few in the sports media actually questioned it.

One good season of park inflated numbers set him up for life.

I thought he'd be better than this, he'll probably still improve, but shame on the Cubs for thinking they'd get the same guy who was the DH in Texas last season.

I can't help but laugh, really. I think every fan of every team that Milton Bradley has played on knew that his signing would be a mistake for the Cubs. And 3 years at $10m? My god. What an idiotic move...

Adam Dunn, Raul Ibanez, Pat Burrell, Bobby Abreu... any of them would've been cheaper, more reliable, less likely to cause clubhouse drama, and when you factor in all of the above, more productive. The Cubs management sure knows how to keep their championship drought going...

I believe Pinella and Bradley's attitudes are going to clash. Lou will win that battle so its time for the Cubs to eat some salary and ship him off. I guarantee that the Rangers would take him back with a lot of salary eaten.

The guy who runs bleedcubbieblue is an idiot, and has taken many opportunities over the years to take shots at mlbtraderumors.com. He should not be given links to his site.

Please don't read into anything Al Yellon writes. He's a pretty terrible writer who gets an audience because a ridiculous amount of idiotic Cubs fans think that he's SO SMART because he's been going to games for 40 years.

Forget about trading him, it realistically isnt going to happen. No one will want him for the salary alone really (remember, 2011 picks up really soon, so they would be on the hook for that) But add in the mental issues, and you have a pure sunk cost. Even if we did find a taker, we would have to eat at least 10-15 million and wont receive much of anything in return – it isnt worth it. However, there is an out.

Release him! And release him now! It has to be done in the next 20 days!

2011 hasn’t vested yet, we would not be on the hook for that cost. We would solely be eating 9 million in 2010 and the remainder of what he is owed. No one will pick him up off waivers because of the cost they would be on the hook for. He will then wait out his 10 days and try to sign a league min deal elseware.

He is counter productive to the team. Releasing him in the next 20 days or so costs us the least money, get him off the club and saves the hassle of trying to find a taker. I doubt Hendry will do it because it will be such a slap (from “the number one target” to a complete “oops” in barely 3 months) but it is what should be done.

give bradley until the break to start hitting. if not, consider sending him packing. at this point he's just taking a spot from fox or hoffpauir.

So funny. Nobody wanted Bradley before the Cubs signed him.. They were bidding against themselves this past season. Even the Rangers realized he had an attitude problem and got out of the situation with a draft pick. No chance he goes anywhere, there is nobody going to take him, even if he was hitting now with the way the baby is acting.

Re: Red Sox SS

Nick Green is playing well *now*, and Jed Lowrie is on the mend. That doesn't mean that Nick Green is a strong shortstop. And Lowrie's could be even more injury prone than Nick Johnson, for all we know.

Why mess with what's working? See how Green handles the job, and ease Lowrie back into things as the utility infielder.

If Green is still playing like this two months from now, then we know he's solid.

Bradley was paid at market rate...from last year. The market hadn't been set this year, and I think that was Hendry's biggest mistake, not being patient. If he had waited, he could have had him for 2/14 at least.

However, Bradley is actually pretty decent in RF and despite him being awful at the plate so far, he is still getting on base at a .355 clip. I guarantee you that while the first 1/6th of his contract hasn't been good, he will pick up his play.

If you remember, it was controversy that gave the Cubs the kick in the @ss that they needed two years ago, and they need some players who aren't going to be apathetic about being a .500 team.

While Bradley's contract was definitely too much money, Bradley as a player isn't done being a good one.

So sit back, endure the destructive presence and hope he starts hitting better? That’s your solution?

The biggest mistake Hendry made was signing him period. He knew problems would follow, and they started showing themselves in the first days of the season. He had never had a real contract, he had always been playing paycheck to paycheck too really, of course he was going to be playing hard. Signing him for 3 years and much more then he should have been paid is just the icing on that cake. But don’t give me the “apathetic about being 500” thing with regard to Bradley though. Bradley cares about one thing, and one thing only – that thing is not the team.

Soriano said it best
''We are 25 players, and we have to be on the same page. If he is not 100 percent to help the team win, we don't need him”

But how is he? Looking back on those first couple days
“Here's everything you need to know about Milton Bradley. The setting was the opening homestand of the season. Bradley was expressing his unhappiness in Chicago during a contentious session with reporters. As he walked away, the oft-injured Bradley was asked: How do you feel?

''I feel like 30 million bucks,'' Bradley said over his shoulder, not missing a beat.”

I admitt to over reacting about the situation at first. I assumed that Pinella objected to something more detrimental to the team like not running a grounder out or making a mental error on the field like not knowing how many outs there are again. However, getting upset because he missed a grapefruit over the plate that could've helped the team is a little more digestable. In hindsight it's nothing that should provoke a trade or talk of anything to get rid of him. If anything the situation is compounded by his lack of hitting and fielding. The fielding likely won't improve much but the Cubs were fools to expect anything different, after all that's why he DH'd most of the time. The hunger is there to improve and I think he'll end up w/ good numbers when it's all said a done. If anyone should be tolerant of a bad temper it should be Lou. When you're not hitting and have a rep of being a "problem child" there's the outcry as such we're seeing. If you're smacking the snot out the bal and throwing temper tantrums at water coolers, etc then you're a fiery loveable guy like Youkilis. Double standard but it is what it is.

"Double standard but it is what it is."

It has nothing to do with his production. It has everything to do with this

"We pay the guy $30 million," Piniella's voiced echoed that night in the clubhouse, "and nothing's ever his fault."

Bradley has been on 7 teams in 9 years, and the longest was 2.5 years with the Indians (where 50% of it was on the DL). He has been run out of 5 cities, and has shown nothing but attitude since he got here. He has had meetings with Pinella, Hendry and teammates because of attitude issues, and it hasn’t even been 3 months yet!

And a lot of us (myself included) were against this deal the moment we heard about it. Performance isnt the issue. He is.

SuzyMan: I'm not putting Bradley's history on trial here and I'm certainly not defending anything he's ever done. However, the specific incident that ust happened would've been received differently if a) He were hitting like an all-star and b) if the Cubs were running away w/ their division. Look at Youkilis and remove Bradley's history for a second (simply because that history existed before the Cubs signed, therefor he starts fresh). You don't think for a second it would've been excused as simply a player frustrated from stranding a runner or striking out and not getting the job done? Keep in mind this wasn't an arguement w/ a teammate or anything like that. He got in the dugout and went wild on the water cooler because HE failed to get HIS job done at the plate in that at bat. Pinella was right to confront him, I'm ust saying...Bradley's passion/frustrations got to him. Now if you want to get rid of him because he sucks at the plate, can't play the field and is signed to a horrible contract then that's another issue. Blame Bradley but you better blame the front office as well.

“Blame Bradley but you better blame the front office as well.”

And I, as well as others, do. But blaming the front office doesn’t remove the detrimental attitude from our clubhouse. Since he has gotten here, he has had multiple run ins with multiple people, and it is still short of 3 months of actual games. He has shown everything you would fear he might, the self-centered attitude, the lackadaisical approach, the “they are out to get me” paranoia, the nagging injuries. He is a train wreck really, any flaw you can name he probably has. Now, add the lack of production on top of it and the disaster goes from a level 10 to off the charts.

And being a Cub fan, I know how much one person can affect the club as a whole. On June 19th 2007 we shipped our best catching option off because of an attitude issue. We were 32-37 at the time. We go 53-40 the rest of the way.

I am currently running under the impression that he is pushing himself harder because of lack of production while having signed his first big contract. And that's exactly what feeds his paranoia about officiating and management. I see him really trying very hard to be the player he CAN be, but he CAN'T do it because the officials won't call a correct strike zone! (or so says he)

I knew he was trouble in spring training when he struck out (i think swinging) and he absolutely blew up yelling at himself. I think he threw his bat and all. And this was spring training!

Trading him is not an option unless maybe the Nats will do him for Dunn straight up! (wishful thinking) Hell, he may do much better somewhere where he isn't expected to solidify the lineup.

Holliday for Bradley in a package deal anyone?

on second thought, why would the A's want him back?

“Blame Bradley but you better blame the front office as well.”

And I, as well as others, do. But blaming the front office doesn’t remove the detrimental attitude from our clubhouse
---------------

No it doesn't at all. But it is what it is. The Cubs have to deal with him as he is absolutely untradeable. They might as well try and figure out how to make this work. Bradley SHOULD be held accountable for any and everything he does. However, that's like buying a pitbull and then getting mad because it bites you. Ever heard the saying "You can't turn a hoe (whore) into a housewife"? Consider Hendry Chicago's version of Captain "Save a Hoe".

I have been one of the few this offseason who said the Cubbies should have gotten Adam Dunn. Nsts sign him for 5 mil a year. Oh, wait. DeRo 5.5 mil a year. Put the calculators; that is about or is equal to the amount paid to Bradley.

Dunn last i checked 17-18 HRs 40s RBIs
DeRo 13-15 high 40s RBIS (and a Cardinal; thank you Hendry)
Bradley 5 HRs 16 RBIs

Wow. What a great offseason. (yes that is sarcasm.) Can understand getting rid of Marquis, paid too much for a 5th starter, and Wood, couldnt pay him what he deserved. But Bradley signing is dumb. yes dumb. no one here can change my mind. so, my cubs line-up would have been
Rigties Lefties
lf soriano lf soriano
cf fukudome ss the riot
1b lee 1b lee
3b ramirez 3b rameriz
rf dunn rf dunn
2b dero 2b dero
c soto cf johnson
ss the "riot" c soto

hoffpauir, fontenot, koyie hill, 2b/ss(not miles, RH hitter), ? (fox after hot start in AAA)

sorry my spacing got screwed up in my posting of the line-ups

wow, i think my first post got totally deleted. working on it again.
