We're creating a glossary of terms that explains baseball transactions. We hear "service time," "arbitration" and "designated for assignment" constantly; it's time to create a reference tool that explains these terms to MLBTR readers. Here's what we have:

The Boras-effect; Though may not qualify and probably most anyone who visits the site has heard of Scott Boras.

A short analysis of "option years" and "options" wouldn't hurt. I know there's some confusion there in places.

Might be useful to have a glossary of commonly used statistics. For new readers stat categories like FIP, BABIP, UZR, etc may be new. While they aren't commonly referenced in an actual post - they do get mentioned often in the comments section.

I would add "Player to be Named Later" or PTBNL along with it's rules. I'd also add the Pete Incaviglia rule (i.e. a first round draft pick cannot be traded for one year after he signs).

The Pete Incaviglia rule goes hand-in-hand with the PTBNL thing, normally.

Split contracts like Delmon Young and what they do to options.

Im with BJSGUESS, the statistic meanings, and what they actually are.

Good suggestions... keep 'em coming.

I agree with having a statistics section, but go ahead and include some of the more common ones. Not every reader on here knows what OPS is, nor how slugging percentage is calculated, and those things are always a heavy part of discussion here.
Also, I still don't know what LOOGY stands for, although I do know what it means...

Two things would be really helpful.
I don't know of any website that has a list of which players have minor league options remaining. You've done a fantastic job of breaking down club by club contract options for each team, but it's quite a tedious task to determine whether a given player has an option left or whether he'd have to clear waivers before being sent down. I know all the ins and outs and every detail of the rules, but in order to get this information on a given player, you basically have to go to the team's website and look at the transactions for that player since the day that he was first added to their 40 man roster and count how many times he's been optioned. I've gotten pretty good at doing these research projects, but it's still tedious. Very often, the player in question has been traded and you have to look at the transaction records for several clubs to get your information, and if you don't find three seasons where the player was optioned, you keep looking and hope you didn't miss one.
The other thing that would be helpful is a good "closer report" (for fantasy purposes) since you've discontinued doing that. Rotoworld has one, but they don't list the next in line relievers in the event that something happens to the incumbent closer.

Means "lefty one out guy".

DFA and outrighted are listed, but what about "released," since there is a difference
DL rules (difference b/w 15 and 60 day as it pertains to roster replacements)
25-man roster
40-man roster
September callup
Simple ones, but used a ton.

Tigerdog:
That would definitely be a valuable resource, but, like you say, tedious. Too bad there isn't a simple way of coming up with that list.
And Tim does closer reports on his fantasy site, RotoAuthority, from time to time.

"Look for"
Used by hack prognosticators to falsely infer they have inside knowledge that some event is going to happen.
ex. "Look for the Jays to deal Holliday to the Mets by the deadline."

I like the DL stuff - specifically, can a player on the 15 day DL end up on the DL longer than 15 days without being added to the 60-Day & do minor league rehab assignments factor in to players being 'out of options?'
