Blue Jays Sign Marcus Stroman

The Blue Jays and first round selection Marcus Stroman have signed a contract, the pitcher and the team announced today. Stroman obtained a bonus of $1.8MM, ESPN.com's Keith Law tweets.  The Blue Jays selected Stroman 22nd overall and the recommended bonus for that slot is exactly $1.8MM.

"Officially a member of THE Toronto Blue Jays! Signed my contract," Stroman tweeted. "Beyond excited and blessed. Ready to work!"

Stroman, a right-hander drafted out of Duke, has an impressive repertoire depite his 5'9" frame. He sits 92-94 mph as a starter and can touch 96 out of the bullpen, according to Baseball America. He has a nasty slider and could be the first 2012 draftee to reach the Major Leagues if he pitches in relief, according to many scouts.

I have a feeling the Blue Jays might have pulled a “Chris Sale” move out of their hats on this one. Sign him for closer to slot and fast-forward his service time clock. Given that he’s apparently MLB ready and their current bullpen is, well, not… I’d be surprised if he’s still in the minors in a month.

But, then again, its AA. So, what do I know?

The Jays need starting pitching if they will make something happen this year, better to leave him in the minors if they view him as a starter.

I was mentioning this as a possibility yesterday.  Sign him at slot, and then a quick call up and sign an extension.  Yes, it starts the service clock, but if he’s really MLB ready or close to it, then it shouldn’t really matter.

I’m good buddies with Kellogg, and it seems like he’s honouring his commitment to ASU, as he is looking for about 300k to buy him out of that commitment, although it would be unreal if he signed with the hometown team!

cole irving is better. but he probably wont sign for $400k

  10. Lunchbox45 3 years ago

    only 330k left i think

  11. Lunchbox45 3 years ago

I read 330 with out having to give up a draft pick

past 10th round you only get hit for excess of $100k…  so you could sign one guy for $430k, or 2 for $265k each….
