Padres Notes: Street, Ownership

The Padres are tied for last place in the NL West with a 34-53 record, but there's lots of intrigue for Padres fans this summer. Carlos Quentin, Chase Headley and Huston Street are among the players who figure to draw interest from rival teams as the July 31st trade deadline approaches. Here's the latest on the Padres…

  • The Padres have scouted the Cardinals and will watch one of St. Louis’ top minor league affiliates this week, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes. Street, San Diego’s closer, could be targeted by the Cardinals in trade talks. He says he prefers to continue closing if he’s traded.
  • Commissioner Bud Selig told reporters, including Scott Miller of CBSSports.com, that he doesn’t know if the Padres’ sale will be completed by the owners meetings scheduled for next month (Twitter link). "I understand they [still] have two or three weeks of work," the commissioner said.

If the Padres don’t get new ownership before the trade deadline, all this trade speculation could be moot. Its frustrating, because the Padres need to make some tough financial decisions including whether or not to sign Quentin long term and build around him. Also, what about Headley? Can JB trade Headley without knowing what the new owner’s plan to do going forward?

That is a really good point! Unless new ownership approves it. Im sure they just want payroll down so they can build on a younger team.

The Cardinals are sitting pretty right now with Mcclean,Burkman and Garcia coming back in July. I would hate for the Cardinals give up a big prospect BUT to get a Houston Street I think you have to make THAT move. Then Cardinals could have a great 7th and 8th inning guy in Motte. I would be willing to give Jenkins up for a PROVEN closer in Street.

This could be the ideal time for Brynes to work some magic and get the Padres a couple OF prospects in exchange for the 3 mentioned above. Allen Craig would be sweet but everyone from the redbirds side on here seems to think that would never happen, I kinda like Marte from the Pirates although he could end up being the next Veneble……who knows

I wouldn’t be surprised if they aren’t even looking at Street.  Clayton Richard and Joe Thatcher make more since to me.  Move Kelly to a relieve role and Cleto out of the pen.  I know Kelly has pitched well but I think he could be “2011 Lynn like” out of the pen.  Trade something like Gorgen, Freeman, Cleto, Reifer, Fornataro for Richard and Thatcher.

I could see the Cardinals trade Pete Kozma and Cox for Street.  I think the Padres will be looking at Ryan Jackson in a Street deal (defensive shortstop who has shown a little with the bat the past couple of years).  Cox would enable to the Padres to then move Headley for more prospects (possibly to Pittsburgh where they could get Marte and some pitching) and also trade Quentin to the Reds for more prospects.  After this season, the Padres should boast the best farm system without question and have top prospects/youth for every position on the field.

I would take Cox and move him to second but I dunno if he would transition well.

Padres already have Gyorko (#50 prospect in baseball) in the system and Logan Forsythe in the majors. They already have the ammunition to move Headley if they want.

Also agree with Jeff below me that Allen Craig is going nowhere.

No way does St. Louis trade Allen Craig for a RP, that would be a historically bad trade for the Cardinals.  Craig is a legit right-now star that is controlled trough 2017, and is a cornerstone to the future of that team.  St. Louis is one of the top organizations in baseball because they know how to evaluate talent, not make hasty trades.  Not a Cardinals fan, just an observation.

Will you please stop allowing people that don’t have any money from buying baseball teams?

What about Street for Allen Craig? Could be expendable with Berkman due back shortly after the All-Star break without giving up any top prospects and could provide some much needed production for the Padres and also insurance if they cannot extend Quentin.

Maybe expendable for this year and this year only…but Craig is a long term plan for the Cardinals at first next year with Berkmans contract expiring. Craig in my opinion is untouchable, over .300 average with 13 Hr and 45 Rbi in only 46 games. We would want a ton back for Craig, not just straight up for Street. Craig is cheap and extremely productive and only getting better.

I’d take Craig.  He’d surely like to come play at home!

how would you feel about kelly and a lower level pitching prospect, kellys had some success in the majors in a couple starts

Member

If we trade Kelly, who goes into the rotation without knowing when Garcia is coming back? The rotation is depleated enough without trading away the person we brought up to fill in in the rotation.

im still seeing the cardinals going out and making a trade for a big name starter, at least im hoping

Saw footage during the All Star Game of Huston Street doing some charity work for a foundation of his. Off the field he looks like a nice guy and those types of intangibles along with the fact that he would add a young closer to a contending teams bullpen makes him the perfect bullpen piece to look to acquire. When you take a look at his WHIP, he’s definitely one of the games better relievers who has been very consistent outside of a few injuries here and there. If I were a team looking for Bullpen help, Street would be my number one target for sure. He’s been around and is highly touted.

According to reports, they have been scouting my Pirates low A team in regards to a possible Quintin trade, so apparently major league ready isnt a must.

pretty good pitching with miller, martinez, swaggerty, second base got wong, third base we have cox, i guess you could still consider matt adams a prospect hes at first base, in the outfield theres taveras, those would be our top overall, and of those id say miller wong and taveras are untouchable

Member

Martinez is no longer untouchable?  Last season when there were talks of Bell going to the Cardinals, it sounded like he was the second coming.

Member

i dont see him as untouchable, hes projected to be very good yes but i also see him as a very good trade piece that can be had for something we need

Member

I can tell you right now, if Martinez was offered for Street, you guys would have yourself a new closer.  Now why can’t you and I be the GMs of these two teams?  We’d already have a deal done.  :)

20 saves out of 24 opportunities… I can name a lot of teams that would love to have a guy with 20 saves at All Star Break! BTW… anybody can pitch in San Diego.

they obviously dont trust him if they put other people in for the save…and he was also successful in coors

His biggest year was 37 saves with 11 Blown Saves… I would hardly call that successful.

we would not have a deal done haha, cause martinez would never be offered for street, in a deal like for a reliever hes untouchable, for a top tier starter, he is not untouchable

High upside arms, outfield, and shortstop are the type of prospects padres want, padres have deep farm so quality over quantity

Top 3? The Rangers, Blue Jays, Mariners, Diamondbacks, Pirates, Nationals, and Padres may want to have a word.  Top 10? Potentially. Top 3? Extremely questionable.

Makes sense, I read on Baseball America that Kelly has touched 100 mph relieving. What has he sat at so far in the majors? I was thinking Kelly and maybe a high upside arm or bat like Victor DeLeon or Lance Jeffries. Dream would be for Street for Jenkins lol.I was hoping that last year we could’ve traded Bell to the cards for him, but the draft picks we got from Bell look promising.

Amen to that, Venable has had more opportunity then anybody to turn into something. 4th duder sounds right

Member
2 years 11 months ago

Heath Bell has years as good if not better on the road at petco.

I believe they will add pitching.

The Venable project is over. He’s a solid 4th OF. The Padres need a run producer desperately. None of the internal options are the answer, and that’s very apparent to the FO.

No doubt. Was not saying permently.  4 times in CF this year.  No reason to think that number can’t be pushed to ten over the last 4 to 6 weeks after Berkman comes back.  Berk will sit at least twice a week. Freese breaks weekly. Basically saying the old and frail guys will take a rest and Craig will be there to fill in almost everyday.

i wasnt saying for street, i was saying exactly what you are, for a big deal, in a deal for a someone like street yes hes untouchable, for a trade for someone along the lines of hamels or greinke, i think he can be had

Member
2 years 11 months ago

Where would Headley play? Freese. Chase is NOT an OF.

Member
2 years 11 months ago

They need MLB ready impact OF bats. The Padres have a deep system, but not close in terms of OF production. Are you saying the Padres should concede next year, and not try to acquire what they lack so desperately because of what the park does to the hitters?

If players like Gyorko comes (with other recent contributes) up they could be competitive next year, or the year after.

Especially if the top pitching prospects return healthy. The Padres are also exploring the notion currently of modifying the fences ala Citi field in the off-season.

Guest
2 years 11 months ago

Wait, how about Headley and Street for Craig and Gast?  I’m not sure who the Padres will have for a closer but imagine Quentin and Craig in the same line up?  that sounds nice…

Member

we have more than enough outfielders

Guest

how about Quentin and Street for Craig and Gast?

Member
2 years 11 months ago

Very true. I just don’t see dealing Street for anything less than a potential impact bat (don’t see that) or a very solid pitching prospect. The Padres have been decimated by injuries. Not sure if Gast or Kelly would be enough. The Padres are looking for impact players. Quality, not quantity. Watch out for Byrnes, he picked the Reds pocket! lol.

As a Cubs fan, I would think a Craig/Street deal is way off.  Doubt if Berkman is brought back next year.  Even this year, Berk will need a break (if he ever comes back).  He also will relieve Beltran in right.  Beltran will move to center putting Jay on the bench every few games.  Card fans have also clamored for Craig at second for the rest of the year (which I doubt).  But he also can play third, giving the Cards insurance for Freese.  All that versatility and you can just plug him into clean-up.  I simply could not imagine Craig getting traded.

Member
2 years 11 months ago

Yeah is he with the AAA affiliate now, or on the big league roster?

Member
2 years 11 months ago

Where does he play when Berkman comes back? Street’s option could be picked up for next year as well at 9MM. I wouldn’t say that’s incredibly unreasonable. I just see it benefiting both clubs without dipping into the farm. But, as pointed out above, the Padres are scouting the higher MiLB affiliates, so….

Member

2013:$9M player option (club may decline and pay $0.5M buyout)

Member
2 years 11 months ago

You maybe right. But Where does Craig play when Lance comes back? Just saying I could see him expendable and benefiting both ball cubs without dipping in to the farm.
