Alan Embree Rumors

A's Decline To Offer Arb To Embree, Thomas

According to MLB.com's Mychael Urban, the A's declined to offer arbitration to Type B free agents Alan Embree and Frank Thomas. Embree was an uncertainty, but the player said earlier today he didn't expect an offer. Ten teams have expressed interest in the lefty reliever. Among them: the Mariners and Rockies, reportedly.   Continue Reading

Mariners Make Free Agent Offer

According to MLB.com's Jim Street, Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik made an offer to a position player free agent and expects to know more within 24-48 hours. That free agent is not Ken Griffey Jr., though Zduriencik has talked to his agent. Any guesses? One reader emailed wondering if the Ms could be the mystery team for Rafael Furcal. Alan Embree is also on the radar; he acknowledged that the Mariners were one of ten clubs to express interest with his agent.   Continue Reading

Rockies Rumors: Fuentes, Embree, Taveras

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has a few Rockies tidbits today... It deserves another mention - Brian Fuentes has scheduled a visit with the Mets. If he signs there, the Rockies will add the Mets' #25 pick to their own #11 pick in the first round while also snagging a sandwich pick. The Rockies want two lefties, probably from the pool of Glendon Rusch, Alan Embree, Brian Shouse, and Joe Beimel. Renck says the Tigers are aggressively pursuing Beimel, while Embree might have extra appeal if he can be had on a one-year deal. The Rockies hope to...   Continue Reading

Perrotto's Latest: Teixeira, Burnett, Wilson

John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus has his Sunday article up. Let's go through it: The Angels may be willing to match the Yankees $140MM offer to CC Sabathia. They won't offer 10 years to Mark Teixeira. If they can't land Teixeira, they will consider Pat Burrell for first base. A.J. Burnett is looking at the Blue Jays, Red Sox, Yankees, Braves, Orioles, and Phillies. The Twins want a left-side infielder for Delmon Young, so they can open a spot for Denard Span in the starting lineup. The Tigers are pursuing Jack Wilson from the Pirates and Matt Treanor from the...   Continue Reading

A's Rumors: Furcal, Embree, Thomas

Joe Stiglich of the Contra Costa Times has a few A's rumors: Stiglich spoke with Rafael Furcal's agent, Paul Kinzer, and heard that it will be the middle of next week at the earliest that Furcal decides where he'd like to sign. It no longer seems likely that Furcal will narrow his options down to two teams this weekend. In a poll earlier in the week, 32% of MLBTR readers said they expected Furcal to sign with the A's, who had the most votes of any team by far. The Rockies are interested in free agent reliever Alan Embree, but...   Continue Reading

Rockies Rumors: Embree, Shouse, Taveras, Atkins

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has the latest on the Rockies. Manager Clint Hurdle says the Rockies are focused on adding pitching, particularly in the bullpen. On the radar: Aaron Heilman, Alan Embree, Joe Beimel, and Brian Shouse. Yesterday Joel Sherman said the Mets balked at the idea of swapping Heilman and Pedro Feliciano for Huston Street. Renck adds that the Reds and White Sox remain interested in outfielder Willy Taveras. On November 11th, Tracy Ringolsby said the Reds were not interested in Taveras despite reports. As for Garrett Atkins, Renck believes the market will take shape after...   Continue Reading

Rockies Considering Embree, Shouse, Ohman

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post talked to Rockies manager Clint Hurdle, who said the team has internally discussed lefthanded free agent relievers Alan Embree, Brian Shouse, and Will Ohman. Ken Rosenthal also suggests Embree is a possibility. Another note from Rosenthal: The Rockies, at least for the moment, seem content to keep third baseman Garrett Atkins and the three players they acquired in the Matt Holliday trade - left-hander Greg Smith, outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and reliever Huston Street. Thinking about Street...it makes the most sense to trade him in June or July. Right now the supply for closers...   Continue Reading

Options Declined: Taguchi, Gordon, Counsell, Embree

Alright, time to lump today's remaining options together in one post. The Pirates declined Jason Michaels' $2.6MM option. He could re-sign for less. The Phillies declined their options on So Taguchi ($1.25MM with a $150K buyout) and Tom Gordon ($4.5MM with a $1MM buyout). The moves may have been Pat Gillick's last as GM. The Brewers declined Craig Counsell's $3.4MM option, paying a $400K buyout. The Athletics declined Alan Embree's $3MM option. As a Type B free agent, the A's could offer him arbitration. Susan Slusser spoke to Embree, who didn't mind having the option declined.   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Yankees, Lowe, D'Backs

Links for Thursday... Peter Abraham takes a look at the Yankees' first base options. The Royals could match up on a trade, if the Yanks are willing to try an unproven player. A pair of free agent bargains from Dave Cameron: Randy Johnson and Derek Lowe. What kind of salary will Lowe command? Free agent reliever Will Ohman hopes to remain in Atlanta. Braves GM Frank Wren has already talked to every team about his needs in left field and the rotation. Nick Piecoro looks at the D'Backs' offseason needs. Will there be room in the budget to make the...   Continue Reading

Olney's Latest: Sabathia, Ellis, Embree, Giles

Buster Olney brings the rumors: If the Yankees want CC Sabathia, they will not lose in any bidding war now that a new ballpark puts them in the position to "throw unlimited dollars" at CC. Unless CC wants to play in the NL, or avoid the media circus of New York City, Olney seems convinced the Yankees will land him. The A's have begun contract negotiations with Mark Ellis. No details yet. Before the trade deadline, no teams expressed interest in Alan Embree and his $2.25MM salary. This could indicate that the A's will not pick up his $3MM option....   Continue Reading

A's Rumors: Ellis, Embree

More A's rumors and news, courtesy of Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (here and here). GM Billy Beane is committed to the long-term plan, and is not interested in quick fixes. He'd like to add a free agent bat, probably an older player on a short-term commitment (Jason Giambi could make sense). Second baseman Mark Ellis had shoulder surgery a few weeks ago. The uncertainty hurts his free agency prospects, which might give the A's a better chance to re-sign him. Ellis is a Beane favorite, and the A's hope to bring him back. The A's will decide...   Continue Reading

A's Rumors: Street, Crosby, Embree

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle has a slew of A's hot stove info for us today. Pending free agents include Mark Ellis, Frank Thomas, Emil Brown, and Keith Foulke. All except Ellis are certainly goners. Huston Street trade talks may resume with the team that claimed him in August. All we know is that it was a non-contender. Street is under team control through 2010, and could earn $5MM next year. The A's aren't planning to trade Justin Duchscherer, and are currently just hoping his hip will be OK for '09. Shortstop Bobby Crosby will earn $5.25MM next...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Mets, Embree, Olsen, Hoffman, Izzy, Phillies

A few notes from around the MLBiverse... Bill Madden says the Mets may be out of luck for a closer, even if Huston Street and Brian Fuentes have cleared waivers and are available. Madden says the price tags are just too high for the Mets. Alan Embree hopes that not being traded is a sign the A's are going to pick up his $3MM option for next season. Scott Olsen said he prefers to be back with the Marlins in '09 but conceded that the Marlins may prefer to move him due to his arbitration eligibility. Kevin Towers would not...   Continue Reading

Week In Review: 8/10 - 8/16

Taking a look back at this week's happenings here on MLBTR... The biggest move of the month was the Diamondbacks' acquisition of slugger Adam Dunn for Dallas Buck, Micah Owings, and Wilkin Castillo. I can't remember any August trades of this magnitude. Bronson Arroyo told the media Dunn would be seeking over $100MM this offseason; Dunn denied the report wholeheartedly. I'd be surprised to see him get $100MM, but I also certainly don't think it would be the worst signing we've seen in the past few offseasons. The Red Sox acquired Paul Byrd from the Indians. Boston will pay the...   Continue Reading

Embree Claimed By Twins, Pulled Back

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Twins claimed Oakland lefty Alan Embree off waivers, but the A's pulled him back. He can no longer be traded this season. Embree is having a poor season with a 5.40 ERA, but the Twins were still willing to take on the $815K still owed to him this year. Apparently the A's wanted more than salary relief for Embree.   Continue Reading

Marlins Looking For Catcher, Reliever

The NL East is a three-team race, with the Mets, Phillies, and Marlins all within a game of each other. Who'd have thought the Marlins would be contending after trading Miguel Cabrera? According to Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Marlins have intensified their search for a catcher. The targets: Bengie Molina, Ramon Hernandez, Gerald Laird, and Ryan Doumit. Molina and Hernandez are the pricey options. Doumit would be especially tough to pry loose; he has a .937 OPS this year as a 27 year-old. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro wonders if Miguel Olivo, Gregg Zaun, and Paul Lo Duca...   Continue Reading

More From Stark: Mets, Dodgers, Indians

Jayson Stark brings us a few more tidbits from the Hot Stove... The price for Raul Ibanez may be too high for the Mets as Stark reiterates what we heard previously, that Fernando Martinez and Jon Niese are not available...Ken Rosenthal added Robert Parnell to that list of untouchables. The Mets may no longer be in the running for Brian Fuentes as they are not willing to part with Aaron Heilman. Stark says other relief pitchers the Mets have shown some interest in include Cla Meredith, Chad Bradford and Jeremy Affeldt. The Dodgers are said to be interested in several...   Continue Reading

The Lefty Reliever Market

Let's take a look at some of the left-handed relievers on the market. George Sherrill, Orioles 31 years old, under team control through 2011. Known suitors: Cardinals, Brewers Asking price: two or three prospects, possibly a shortstop among them Brian Fuentes, Rockies Almost 33 years old, free agent after season. Type A status likely. Known suitors: Marlins, Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Phillies, Cubs, Cardinals, Rays, Angels, Brewers, Tigers Asking price: Apparently a young starting pitcher - Jon Niese, Ian Kennedy, and Clay Buchholz have been named Damaso Marte, Pirates 33 years old, $6MM club option for '09 with a $250K...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Ivan Rodriguez, Hall, Street

Time for today's link roundup. MLBTR live chat here at 2pm CST, don't miss it! Ivan Rodriguez expects to play ball beyond this season. Bill Hall isn't happy with the Brewers' callup of Russell Branyan. Hall is hitting .220/.292/.418 in 196 plate appearances. He's signed through 2010. Susan Slusser ponders the future of A's relievers Huston Street, Alan Embree, Santiago Casilla, and Joey Devine. Might be tough to deal anyone unless the team drops out of contention. Part 2 of AN's Billy Beane interview.   Continue Reading

A's Sign Alan Embree

As has been rumored for a while now, the A's signed southpaw reliever Alan Embree. According to RotoWorld, he received a two-year deal with a club option for '09. Embree will be 37 in January; he's been around. Embree has good command; he was one of the few free agent relievers with a K/BB ratio over 3. He also had a fine year in terms of ERA and WHIP. RotoWorld mentions that the signing likely indicates Joe Kennedy will move to the rotation. Kennedy will be 28 next season. The southpaw last had success starting in 2004 with the Rockies,..   Continue Reading
