Curt Schilling Rumors

Links for Friday... Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News says $100MM contracts for pitchers are risky, given the deals signed by Kevin Brown, Barry Zito, and Mike Hampton. Those pitchers don't seem similar to C.C. Sabathia, however. The second part of Curt Schilling's article about his trade to the Red Sox. The Royals signed several minor league free agents, including righty Federico Castaneda from the Mexican League. SI.com's Jon Heyman explains why the free agent market is slow. It doesn't seem abnormal to me; it makes sense to wait until after December 1st to see if arbitration is...

Catching seems to be their top priority this winter, though they need a shortstop and closer too. Let's take a look at the latest column from ESPN's Jayson Stark. Stark does the math and finds 15 potentially available closers versus six clubs in the market for one. Should result in a few bargains or teams holding on to their surpluses. The Mets don't seem willing to extend to four years for Francisco Rodriguez. Stark says J.J. Putz would become the Mets' top closer target if he's made available. MetsBlog's Matthew Cerrone wrote a few days ago that the Mets are likely to trade for a reliever with closing experience before attempting to sign one. J.P. Ricciardi quote:...

Last week, we learned that Curt Schilling would be open to returning to the Phillies midseason if he pitches next year. GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said he hadn't even considered the possibility yet. Also last week, Schilling was asked about returning to the Diamondbacks. He likes that idea as well. The D'Backs could probably fit him in. It'll be even cooler if he's reunited with Randy Johnson.

5:44pm: MLB.com's Ken Mandel says the Phillies have Rocco Baldelli, Jerry Hairston Jr., and Kevin Mench on the radar in the event they don't re-sign Burrell. The Phillies have long liked Baldelli, though the Rays hope to talk contract soon. Reds GM Walt Jocketty recently met with Hairston's agent, and feels he made progress. And the Hanshin Tigers hope to lure Mench to Japan. 9:38am: Checkin' in on the Phillies... Curt Schilling's Red Sox career is probably over, writes MLB.com's Ian Browne. Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said the Tigers are open to improving the team in creative ways, but he's not looking to trade away the team's "core players." Other than Justin Verlander and Armando Galarraga, there's a whole lot of uncertainty in the Tigers' 2009 rotation, writes Jon Paul Morosi. It looks like the Mets won't trade Carlos Delgado. Let's kick things off this afternoon with the week in review... Rich Harden doesn't need surgery, and he also doesn't need to worry about where he's pitching next year. The Cubs exercised his $7MM option this week. That one was a no-brainer, good news for Cubs fans. Elsewhere in the Midwest, the Twins exercised backup catcher Mike Redmond's option for $950K. While that's great news for Twins fans, the bigger story for them is that Delmon Young could be available this offseason. Personally, I think trading a 23-year-old outfielder with that kind of upside would be a colossal mistake. I...

Curt Schilling talked to the Sporting News yesterday, revealing his choice for 2009. He'll either retire or pitch for a contender in the second half. Another week down here at MLBTR, here's your review! The Brewers fired manager Ned Yost on Monday. Yost has taken a lot of criticism, and while I personally don't feel like it's a bad move, it seems like an odd time to disrupt the clubhouse, given that the Brewers are right in the wild card race. Perhaps this was intended to spark the Brewers and act as a wakeup call, but they have just two wins since the move. In an attempt to cut payroll, the Tigers may have to move Magglio Ordonez this offseason. Ordonez will make $18MM next...

That’s the bottom line,” Schilling told WEEI yesterday morning. “I’m trying to assess if I’m going to be able to make the commitment for this to happen.” While a return to the Red Sox may seem like the most obvious destination for Schilling, it will be interesting to see if Theo Epstein is willing to throw good money after bad money. There was a report that the Brewers were close to obtaining Joe Crede, but it was published last night. The BBWAA approved a new resolution for 2013. Any player with a contract provision linked to a major award of theirs will not be considered for that award. Makes sense - to repeat Curt Schilling's situation. The Nationals could sign Andruw Jones long-term if they felt it was a bargain - say, $13MM a year. The Giants, White Sox, and Padres may be in the mix as well. Hmmm, White Sox and Boras? Two of my favorite local blogs have good hot stove posts for us today as part of Odds and Ends. This info jives with the recent info from Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald. While Kuroda recently filed for free agency, he's open to offers from MLB and Hiroshima. Kevin Towers expects to fill his center field vacancy via trade. He may first want to wait to see if Mike Cameron accepts the team's upcoming offer of arbitration. Cameron is a Type B free agent. Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times has a Cubs update for us this morning. Let's start with Kerry Wood, who would garner plenty of interest on the open market. Despite rumors that Wood might look elsewhere for a chance to start, he's likely to stay with the Cubs as a starter. The Cubs are on Curt Schilling's list, and they'll be in the mix for him if his price is reasonable. I take that to mean not much more than $12-13MM. A cheaper option might be Hiroki Kuroda, though that could take a three-year commitment. So, perhaps a larger cash..

More random rumors. You know you love it. Tracy Ringolsby has some hot stove musings. It's a fairly sloppy article with one new tidbit: "Tim Lincecum can be had for a quality bat." Either Ringolsby is misinformed, or Brian Sabean has lost it. Lincecum has Cy Young potential. A couple of Red Sox mainstays will stay for '08 - Tim Wakefield and Julian Tavarez. Friday afternoon rumor tidbits... The Indians will probably let Kenny Lofton leave while exercising Joe Borowski's $4MM option. No big surprise there. Schilling might be one of the few free agent buys this winter that actually works out. He turns 41 soon, so health is obviously a concern. Let's catch up on the rumors and minor moves involving the Phillies recently. One offseason objective is, of course, third base. Mike Lowell is the one free agent 3B on the Phils' radar. While Lowell wouldn't mind playing in Philly, he made it clear yesterday that Boston remains his first choice. Curt Schilling acts as his own agent, and he has a list of less than ten teams he'd like to play for in 2008. He actually prefers a one-year deal over two. His main priority, as you might expect, is joining a team with a strong chance to win the World Series. Almost any team in baseball would benefit from signing Schilling to a one-year deal. Does it still make sense for Epstein to play it safe, and then maybe give Schilling an additional million or two as a penalty? Troy Renck of the Denver Post doesn't see the Red Sox expending any effort to acquire Todd Helton, which makes sense given the play of Kevin Youkilis and Mike Lowell. Curt Schilling will arguably be the best free agent starter this winter. Carlos Zambrano and Mark Buehrle may be the big names, but those guys will be looking for deals around five years and may not be better than Schilling in 2008 anyway. When we last checked in on this situation in March, Schilling had no hard feelings towards the Sox but didn't want to discuss anything until after the season. This doesn't rule out Schilling returning to the Red Sox for '08 and beyond, however. I'd be surprised if the Sox don't make an offer, assuming he stays healthy this season.
