George Sherrill Rumors

Mets To Explore Trade For Closer

Ken Davidoff of Newsday has a new article up discussing possibilities for the Mets' closer vacancy. He says the Mets will check in on free agents Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes, but remain wary of the price. I'm wondering if K-Rod will have to back off the five year demand if he wants to get multiple serious bidders. Davidoff says the Mets feel that they have the minor league depth to swing a trade for a closer rather than buy one. Davidoff goes on to speculate that the Mets could look at J.J. Putz, Huston Street, George Sherrill, Joakim Soria,...   Continue Reading

Huff, Millar, Payton Clear Waivers

According to Dan Connolly and Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, four Orioles players have cleared waivers: Aubrey Huff, Jay Payton, Kevin Millar, and Jamie Walker. Walker we already knew about. The Orioles can now trade any of the four to any team. I had guessed that Huff would not clear waivers, on account of his .910 OPS (10th in the AL). However, the $10.1MM owed to Huff through '09 proved too much for the other 29 teams. His limited defensive abilities probably also played a role. The Sun also mentioned that George Sherrill was claimed by an AL team...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Lucchino, Manny, Rangers

I wanted to let the Dunn trade cool off a bit before diving into Jon Heyman's latest. Heyman "people in high places in baseball" who believe Red Sox president/CEO Larry Lucchino might leave after the season, possibly for the Dodgers. He's still butting heads with Theo Epstein apparently. Heyman doesn't buy the idea that Scott Boras orchestrated Manny Ramirez's departure from Boston. He also doesn't buy the idea of Ramirez playing in New York. Nolan Ryan would like Tom Hicks to sell the Rangers to him, but Hicks has shown no willingness to do so. Players such as George Sherrill,...   Continue Reading

Mets In Holding Pattern

8:39am: SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Mets have "kicked around" the idea of acquiring Ian Snell from the Pirates and using him in relief for the rest of the year. Snell is signed through 2010 with club options for '11 and '12. It's tough to see the Bucs moving him, even in an off year. 8:13am: According to David Lennon of Newsday, the Mets are not finding a deal to their liking for a reliever or outfielder. They've put pretty much all of their good prospects off-limits - Fernando Martinez, Jon Niese, Eddie Kunz or Bobby Parnell. Players such as...   Continue Reading

Sherrill Unavailable?

SI.com's Jon Heyman believes Orioles closer George Sherrill might be off the market, as Andy MacPhail was not able to snag a quality young shortstop for him. Heyman believes Huston Street may be the only closer left on the market, if he even is.   Continue Reading

Tigers Unlikely To Acquire Reliever

Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press says the Tigers aren't liking the market price for relief help. The chances of Dave Dombrowski adding a top guy like George Sherrill are slim to none. (By the way, if Sherrill has another outing like last night his ERA will be approaching 5.00.) Morosi says picking up a cheap unwanted reliever like Brian Wolfe or LaTroy Hawkins is plausible, but promoting from within is even more likely. If the Tigers are contending in September might we see Ryan Perry as the first '08 draft pick to reach the bigs?   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Street, Zaun, Guardado, Blalock

Let's round up some odds and ends for a rumor-packed day. The Reds had a scout at a recent Rangers-A's game; they may have been eyeing a Texas catcher. Billy Beane is still fielding offers for Huston Street; Jon Heyman mentions the same teams we've heard in the past. Ed Wade told Miguel Tejada he's staying put. Gregg Zaun would welcome a trade. GM J.P. Ricciardi responded by saying "someone has to want you." The Marlins could make sense; their catcher hunt may hinge on Matt Treanor's decision whether to have surgery. John Maine has a mild rotator cuff strain....   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Tejada, Laird, Renteria, Sherrill

New one from Ken Rosenthal... The Padres will ask Greg Maddux again to consider accepting a trade to a team not located on the West Coast. The Dodgers haven't shown interest. One big league source told Rosenthal that the Astros have had "absolutely no dialogue" about Miguel Tejada. The Marlins are the most aggressive suitor for Gerald Laird. The Brewers, Reds, and Yankees are also in on the Rangers' catcher. Rosenthal points out a Doug Melvin connection - Melvin acquired Laird as the Rangers' GM back in '02. [UPDATE: Rangers guru Jamey Newberg tells me that it was actually John...   Continue Reading

Red Sox Eyeing Relief Options

12:51pm: MLB.com's Jim Molony says Brocail, Geary, and Jose Valverde aren't going anywhere since the Astros are actually looking to add to their 'pen. 11:21am: ESPN's Peter Gammons says the Red Sox have been discussing Doug Brocail with the Astros. 9:57am: Boston's top priority at the trade deadline seems to be relief help, if anything. They were linked to several relievers this morning. Sean McAdam of the Providence Journal says the Sox "are interested again and expect expect to get back to the Royals on Ron Mahay." Mahay is generally believed to be unavailable. Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald...   Continue Reading

Marlins Looking For Catcher, Reliever

The NL East is a three-team race, with the Mets, Phillies, and Marlins all within a game of each other. Who'd have thought the Marlins would be contending after trading Miguel Cabrera? According to Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Marlins have intensified their search for a catcher. The targets: Bengie Molina, Ramon Hernandez, Gerald Laird, and Ryan Doumit. Molina and Hernandez are the pricey options. Doumit would be especially tough to pry loose; he has a .937 OPS this year as a 27 year-old. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro wonders if Miguel Olivo, Gregg Zaun, and Paul Lo Duca...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Eyre, Sherrill

ESPN's Jayson Stark has been burning up the phone lines today. New blog posts can be found here and here. Brian Fuentes and Damaso Marte are off the market, but lefty relievers remain plentiful. The Cubs would like to move Scott Eyre, perhaps to an AL club like the Rays, Red Sox, or Tigers. Eyre is in the last year of a three-year contract and can block trades to ten clubs. The Orioles would like to pry a young shortstop loose if they are to trade George Sherrill. Erick Aybar, Maicer Izturis, and Jason Donald are names of interest, but...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Ohman, Rhodes

ESPN's Jayson Stark has some new rumor material. Braves lefty Will Ohman is drawing plenty of interest, with the Tigers, Rays, Yankees, and Cardinals named as suitors. Perhaps the Yanks' interest will diminish now that they have Damaso Marte. The Marlins and other clubs may turn to Arthur Rhodes as a more reasonable Plan B if they aren't able to pry George Sherrill or Brian Fuentes loose. Given the emergence of Jeff Samardzija as a power bullpen arm, the Cubs are no longer looking for pitching. They desire a left-handed hitting center fielder, but that might wait until the offseason....   Continue Reading

Week In Review: 7/20 - 7/26

This one will be a bit lengthy, which can be expected as the deadline approaches. Here's a review of some of the major moves and rumors of the last week: The Yankees acquired Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte from the Pirates for OF Jose Tabata, RHP Ross Ohlendorf, RHP Dan McCutchen and RHP Jeff Karstens . I agree with Tim that Ian Kennedy would've been a better centerpiece, but Tabata is pretty highly-touted himself. Kennedy would have made a more immediate impact, while Tabata is only 19 years old. The Dodgers acquired Casey Blake for minor league RHP Jon Meloan...   Continue Reading

Perrotto's Latest: Ross, Jacobs, Kent, Burnett

Baseball Prospectus' John Perrotto has a new column. The Mets are looking at relievers Huston Street, Brian Fuentes, Arthur Rhodes, and Eddie Guardado. On the radar for outfielders: Jason Bay, Raul Ibanez, and Randy Winn. A new suitor for Fuentes has emerged: the Diamondbacks. Would they really make another move for a reliever? Other known suitors were named here. The Marlins would consider trading Cody Ross or Mike Jacobs for relief help. New name on the Rays' radar: Dodgers second baseman Jeff Kent. They're better off with Akinori Iwamura aren't they? George Sherrill suitors: Cardinals, Tigers, Dodgers, Marlins, and Phillies....   Continue Reading

More From Stark: Mets, Dodgers, Indians

Jayson Stark brings us a few more tidbits from the Hot Stove... The price for Raul Ibanez may be too high for the Mets as Stark reiterates what we heard previously, that Fernando Martinez and Jon Niese are not available...Ken Rosenthal added Robert Parnell to that list of untouchables. The Mets may no longer be in the running for Brian Fuentes as they are not willing to part with Aaron Heilman. Stark says other relief pitchers the Mets have shown some interest in include Cla Meredith, Chad Bradford and Jeremy Affeldt. The Dodgers are said to be interested in several...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Dunn, Tankersley, Sherrill

ESPN has a new Trade Deadline blog going; here's the link. Jayson Stark already has two entries up, found here and here. Let's dig in! The Yankees have explored the idea of acquiring Adam Dunn, though they're reluctant to meet the Reds' demands. The Marlins are proposing the idea of swapping lefty Taylor Tankersley for a more experienced one like Brian Fuentes or George Sherrill. So far, nothing's cooking. Tankersley, 25, was demoted to Triple A earlier this month after being bitten by the home run bug. He dealt with shoulder tendinitis in early '07. The Rockies instead have their...   Continue Reading

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Trade Deadline

Some random links as we head toward the trade deadline, from the Blogosphere... One writer at Bugs and Cranks thinks that the Rockies should not lower their demand for Brian Fuentes and feels that the Cardinals are the most likely team to land the closer. UmpBump wants the Rockies to keep Matt Holliday and would prefer moving Garrett Atkins, allowing Ian Stewart to play third. Meanwhile, another writer at Bugs and Cranks wants the Cardinals to pass on Matt Holliday and Jason Bay, but think St. Louis should go after George Sherrill and/or Fuentes. Outs Per Swing does not feel...   Continue Reading

Graziano's Latest: Sherrill, Arroyo, Rhodes, Zaun

Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger has a new Trade Winds column. Graziano notes how incredible the Erik Bedard trade could look for Baltimore if they spin George Sherrill for prospects. He names the Cardinals, Rays, Marlins, and Red Sox as suitors. The Mets fear Sherrill's price tag, while the Yankees don't expect a deal within the division. The Yankees haven't spoken to the Reds about Bronson Arroyo (although based on previous reports, they have scouted him). The Yanks aren't likely to sign Barry Bonds, and aren't terribly thrilled with the catching market. Fernando Martinez's possible injury could increase the...   Continue Reading

George Sherrill Rumors

4:50pm: The Baltimore Sun lists the Cardinals, Brewers, Dodgers, Cubs, Reds, Phillies, Marlins, and Tigers as teams represented at yesterday's Orioles-Blue Jays tilt. The article implies that those clubs were there hoping to scout Sherrill, though a few might have been eyeing A.J. Burnett or both pitchers. Jeff Zrebiec says the O's want two or three prospects for Sherrill, who is under team control for a long time. 2:16pm: According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Brewers are not engaged in trade talks for Orioles closer George Sherrill. The O's are looking for a shortstop, and the Brewers...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Teixeira, Padilla, Sheffield, Beltre

ESPN's Jayson Stark has a new Rumblings and Grumblings up. You may want to grab a glass of water or something, because this is a beast of a column. If the Braves have a bad weekend and decide to trade Mark Teixeira, a deal could come together quickly. Stark says the Braves have already touched base with the Rays, Red Sox, Dodgers, Angels and Yankees. Where Tex fits on the Rays, I'm not sure. Additionally, interest in Will Ohman is said to be "massive." A Jorge Posada move to first base could affect the Yankees' interest in Teixeira this winter....   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Teixeira, Burnett, Sherrill

Here's the latest from Ken Rosenthal, who should probably take a vacation in August. The D'Backs inquired on Mark Teixeira, but a trade is unlikely. Tex might be the best available hitter, as Matt Holliday seems likely to stay put. The Rockies scouted Nick Adenhart's last start. The Angels have more interest in Brian Fuentes than Holliday. Tons of scouts converged on Camden Yards last night to watch A.J. Burnett and George Sherrill pitch (those hoping to see Sherrill were disappointed). The Cardinals, Phillies, Yankees, Brewers, Marlins, Dodgers, and Tigers all had scouts there to watch at least one of...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Nady, Teixeira, Sherrill

Jon Heyman is cranking out a lot of rumorage. Here's his latest. The price has dropped a tad on Xavier Nady, as the Pirates have become more interested in moving him. The Braves still might trade Mark Teixeira right before the deadline, and Heyman thinks they can easily beat two draft choices. Many teams scouted George Sherrill recently: the Marlins, Dodgers, Cardinals, Phillies, and Brewers. Some execs "expressed annoyance" at the D'Backs underpaying for Jon Rauch. Heyman says the Yankees are looking for catching, though Peter Abraham doesn't agree. The Twins, Giants, and Dodgers have interest in Hank Blalock, who...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Fuentes, Sherrill, Nady, Kemp, Guthrie

New Rosenthal. Let's take a look. Rosenthal says the Marlins are in on Brian Fuentes and other top relievers, and they're more focused on bullpen help than a catcher. The Marlins' interest in Fuentes was first reported by the Denver Post's Troy E. Renck on July 9th. Sources tell Rosenthal that the Brewers aren't likely to pay up for a top reliever like George Sherrill. Rosenthal considers the Angels the best fit for Sherrill, but doesn't say whether they're actually interested. The Braves probably won't discuss Tim Hudson; they'll need him for next year. Rosenthal wonders whether the Phillies will...   Continue Reading

The Lefty Reliever Market

Let's take a look at some of the left-handed relievers on the market. George Sherrill, Orioles 31 years old, under team control through 2011. Known suitors: Cardinals, Brewers Asking price: two or three prospects, possibly a shortstop among them Brian Fuentes, Rockies Almost 33 years old, free agent after season. Type A status likely. Known suitors: Marlins, Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Phillies, Cubs, Cardinals, Rays, Angels, Brewers, Tigers Asking price: Apparently a young starting pitcher - Jon Niese, Ian Kennedy, and Clay Buchholz have been named Damaso Marte, Pirates 33 years old, $6MM club option for '09 with a $250K...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: K-Rod, Maddux, Wolf, Street

Rumor guru Ken Rosenthal is at it again. Angels GM Tony Reagins is doing his due diligence on available hitters. Rosenthal admits his own suggestion of a Mark Teixeira/Will Ohman blockbuster acquisition is unlikely. Rosenthal believes Francisco Rodriguez's expected asking price to be five years, $75MM. The Angels would not bite on that. Greg Maddux only wants to be traded to a West Coast team. He might accept a trade back to the Dodgers, if Ned Colletti and Kevin Towers want to go down that road. The Orioles would trade George Sherrill if someone wants to overpay. Tons of teams...   Continue Reading

Perrotto's Latest: Reliever Rumors, Bard, Cooper

John Perrotto from Baseball Prospectus has his Sunday column up. Here's the highlights: The Marlins have recalled Jesus Delgado, a right handed reliever, from Double-A Carolina with the intention of showcasing him for trading possibilities. The Cardinals have narrowed their search for a reliever and are now focusing on either Ron Mahay or Brian Fuentes. Detroit would be willing to include Fernando Rodney in a trade for a starting pitcher. The Orioles don't want to trade George Sherrill unless they are overwhelmed by an offer. San Diego is expected to activate Josh Bard from the DL this week, and will...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Fuentes, Holliday, Sherrill

Ken Rosenthal tops off the day with a column full of rumors. Signing Mark Teixeira as a replacement for Manny Ramirez doesn't make sense for the Red Sox, who don't want to take on that kind of mega-contract. The Phillies were recently working on a blockbuster with Colorado that would have netted them Brian Fuentes and Matt Holliday for something like Shane Victorino, J.A. Happ, Carlos Carrasco, and Lou Marson. Those talks have stalled, and the added payroll might've been a problem for the Phillies anyway. Though Frank McCourt denies it, Rosenthal says the Dodgers owned vetoed a CC Sabathia/Casey...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Burnett, Nady, Greinke, Burrell

FRIDAY: We have an update to Stark's column - he is now saying that Burnett does have veto power over 15 teams. THURSDAY: Let's take a look at Jayson Stark's latest over at ESPN.com. The Phillies and Yankees both made failed runs at CC Sabathia. The Phils wouldn't include Carlos Carrasco or Lou Marson, while the Yanks insisted on a negotiating window. The Phils are looking at Erik Bedard and A.J. Burnett by default, while neither of those pitchers makes sense for the Yankees. The Yanks checked in on Aaron Harang, but that's a moot point since he's ailing. Despite...   Continue Reading

Isringhausen Wants a Break

The Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss today reports that there is growing concern about the work of closer Jason Isringhausen, who has already blown five save chances this year. After his most recent blow-up, Izzy said he is sick of embarrassing himself and hurting the team. He suggested a meeting today with manager Tony La Russa, pitching coach Dave Duncan and general manager John Mozeliak to find at least a temporary alternative to using him in the ninth inning. In the short term, Ryan Franklin or Randy Flores could be called on to close games for the Cards, though neither pitcher strikes...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Rivera, Hamels, Sherrill

Here's today's gathering of links. John Shea examines the Giants' roster crunch, which would be greatly relieved by trading Dave Roberts and Steve Kline. Adam Rubin implies that the Angels want too much from the Mets for Juan Rivera - Jon Niese or Bobby Parnell. A deal seems unlikely. Cole Hamels, accused by a heckler of being a cross between Casey Fossum and Shawn Camp. BURNED! Buster Olney is hearing from other teams that the Orioles may shop 30 year-old newly anointed closer George Sherrill this summer. Joe Christensen believes that we'll learn about Joe Nathan's future with the Twins...   Continue Reading

Mariners Close To Bedard Deal?

UPDATE, 1-30-08 at 5:19pm: MLB.com's Jim Street says a last-ditch attempt by the Orioles to sign Bedard to a five-year contract is holding up the trade. Street says Bedard's agent told Andy MacPhail it would take seven years and $100MM, however. Street touches on the Jones degenerative hip thing, indicating that the Orioles heard this but it turned out to be unsubstantiated. UPDATE, 1-30-08 at 4:38pm: Geoff Baker checks in. He's not able to corroborate the MLB.com report. He was able to dismiss the Adam Jones hip stuff. Baker's heard that Angelos was angry about the Jones leak though. Baker..   Continue Reading

Erik Bedard Rumors: Monday

UPDATE, 1-28-08 at 8:58pm: The drama continues. Baker believes the deal is still alive, and heard the original quotes from Jones with his own two ears. Jones did say he was traded to the Orioles and that he was off to Baltimore for a physical, despite the KOMO 1000 backpedaling. In other words, the Orioles asked him to kindly stop talking. Jeff Zrebiec has the latest from the Baltimore side. The O's are holding this up over "unspecified complex issues," which might mean Angelos' approval. Zrebiec believes the framework of a deal has been agreed upon, and that Jones was..   Continue Reading

Bedard Traded To Mariners?

UPDATE, 1-27-08 at 11:29pm: Geoff Baker checks in again. He notes MacPhail's careful choice of words and reiterates that a deal appears close. He seems to think only a Peter Angelos objection could kill it, but would consider that a crazy thing for him to do. UPDATE, 1-27-08 at 10:55pm: Jason Churchill, referencing three sources, believes this to be 99% done. He is hearing Jones, Tillman, Sherrill, Tony Butler, and Kameron Mickolio to the O's. He's not sure whether Bedard extension talks are a factor but you have to think that might be holding it up. He's also unsure on..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Hendrickson, Soria, Sherrill

Here's today's random collection of links. The Marlins signed Mark Hendrickson as the veteran leadership guy for '08, at a cost of $1.5MM. He was knocked around in 15 starts for the Dodgers in '07 but was solid in the pen. The Marlins will put him in the rotation, perhaps to tutor fellow southpaws Andrew Miller and Scott Olsen. Craig Brown would like to see the Royals use Joakim Soria as a starter. There is a theory that the Mariners' signing of Arthur Rhodes will allow them to trade George Sherrill in an Erik Bedard deal. Seems a half-baked theory,..   Continue Reading

Erik Bedard Rumors

Jason Churchill of Prospect Insider dug up "a few fresh nuggets" regarding the Erik Bedard trade discussions. The Mariners reportedly offered Adam Jones, Jeff Clement, and George Sherrill for Bedard. Seems the Orioles want Brandon Morrow or Carlos Triunfel instead of Clement. One source of Churchill's believes the Mariners would be more inclined to buckle and surrender Morrow than Triunfel. It's even possible that the Orioles gave the Mariners a "final counteroffer" including one of the two and will move on if it's rejected. Many Mariners fans believe Bedard is not even worth Jones straight up, so imagine how they'll..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Reitsma, Affeldt

Some late night odds and ends to digest... The Mariners re-signed Chris Reitsma; he hopes to be ready for Spring Training following August elbow surgery (not Tommy John, of course). Reitsma hopes to return to his groundballing, healthy form of 2005. On a related note, Bleeding Blue and Teal speculates that the Mariners could target Jeremy Affeldt if they trade George Sherrill. At one point Affeldt was said to be seeking five years. His agent has already pitched him to the Mariners as a possible starter. Eduardo Encina reports that the Rays seek a superutility player and lefty reliever, and..   Continue Reading

Erik Bedard Mariners/Reds Rumors

UPDATE, 1-10-08 at 5:38pm: Churchill has further updated his right-hand sidebar referencing the Reds possibility. He says the O's want Bailey, Votto, Cueto, and Edwin Encarnacion. This is particularly lopsided, and pushing Melvin Mora back to Cincy wouldn't make it any less so. Mora may have negative value at this point. Meanwhile John Fay says nothing new has happened on the Reds/Bedard front. UPDATE, 1-09-08 at 9:07pm: Rosenthal checks in with an update. If the Mariners would give up Chris Tillman, they could have a done deal. Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein ranks the 19 year-old righty as Seattle's second best..   Continue Reading

Erik Bedard Rumors: Mariners, Reds, Indians

Erik Bedard staying put in Baltimore this winter? Maybe not. Ken Rosenthal and Jason Churchill both busted out brand new material this evening with the latest Bedard chatter. The upshot is that the Mariners seem to have a decent shot at him. Rosenthal says the Mariners will put Adam Jones, Jeff Clement, and Matt Tuiasosopo in the deal. He indicates that the Orioles could push to substitute and get one of Tony Butler, Chris Tillman, and Carlos Triunfel. Looks like Bill Bavasi is sticking to the idea of keeping Brandon Morrow. Rosenthal hedges his bets, but admits to "growing indications..   Continue Reading

Erik Bedard Rumors: Wednesday

UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 1:10am: Geoff Baker believes the Mariners are still in on Bedard, and that no team has beaten their offer yet. However, that offer still may not be enough for Andy MacPhail and Co. UPDATE, 12-5-07 at 1:38pm: Jon Heyman says Bedard turned down a three-year extension offer from the Orioles. He has some interesting thoughts; check it out. Meanwhile there's chatter of a 610 WIP report coming out of Philly about the team's attempts to acquire Bedard. Something like Kyle Kendrick, Shane Victorino, Carlos Carrasco, and others. I don't put much stock in this one as the..   Continue Reading

Yankees After George Sherrill?

Nice find by RotoWorld - at the bottom of this Bergen Record article, there's mention of the Yankees' interest in southpaw reliever George Sherrill. Presumably, Sherrill would be a backup plan if the Yanks can't acquire Mike Gonzalez. From what I hear, there are still a handful of teams involved on the Pittsburgh reliever. Sherrill has an interesting stat line that doesn't seem repeatable - fewer than seven hits per nine, zero home runs in 40 innings, a 4.28 ERA despite six walks per nine. If used as a strict LOOGY, though, he should be pretty good   Continue Reading
