Glendon Rusch Rumors

Rockies Rumors: Fuentes, Embree, Taveras

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has a few Rockies tidbits today... It deserves another mention - Brian Fuentes has scheduled a visit with the Mets. If he signs there, the Rockies will add the Mets' #25 pick to their own #11 pick in the first round while also snagging a sandwich pick. The Rockies want two lefties, probably from the pool of Glendon Rusch, Alan Embree, Brian Shouse, and Joe Beimel. Renck says the Tigers are aggressively pursuing Beimel, while Embree might have extra appeal if he can be had on a one-year deal. The Rockies hope to...   Continue Reading

Rockies Have Not Contacted Ohman

3:51pm: Today has been all about corrections. The latest: Ohman's agent says the Rockies have not called. 9:04am: According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies are one of about ten teams pursuing free agent lefty Will Ohman. Ohman currently has an offer on the table from the Braves. The Rockies would also like to re-sign Glendon Rusch.   Continue Reading

Rockies Rumors: Fuentes, Street, Rusch, Podsednik

MLB.com's Thomas Harding has the latest on the Rockies, here and here. The Rockies will offer arbitration to Brian Fuentes, who is a Type A free agent. Obviously it's all about the two draft picks, as Fuentes will decline. He'll probably sign with a team with an unprotected first-round pick, too. Harding says the Rockies are already receiving calls on Huston Street. ESPN's Buster Olney says Dan O'Dowd is telling other GMs he won't trade Street, but some believe it's posturing. O'Dowd backed off a bit on the idea of re-signing Glendon Rusch and Scott Podsednik, saying he wants to...   Continue Reading

Rockies Talking With Glendon Rusch

According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies have begun preliminary discussions with free agent-eligible pitcher Glendon Rusch. Rusch, 34 in November, posted a 5.16 ERA in 83.2 innings with the Padres and Rockies this year. His peripheral numbers were respectable, and he held lefties to a .257/.261/.376 line. Rusch missed all of the '07 season due to a blood clot in his lung.   Continue Reading

Rockies Rumors: Atkins, Holliday, Barmes

Let's see what we can find in three new columns from Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post today. I wrote last week that the Rockies would come in a bit under $80MM after arbitration raises. Renck pegs it around $75MM. The team's plan is to shop Garrett Atkins for a frontline starter. If the interest is not there (why would it be?), they could switch to Matt Holliday. Renck ponders Matt Cain and a prospect to Colorado, but that is a lot to give up for one year of Holliday. Plus the Giants are not looking to add an...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Duncan, Mather, Huntington, Trachsel, Rusch

A few notes to wrap up what I've come across this Saturday: The Hardball Times has an interview with Pirates GM Neal Huntington. It's plenty long. He talks about the dynamics in dealing with his former team, the Cleveland Indians. Steve Trachsel might be on his way out with the Orioles. Tough to argue against that move. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the O's are in the cellar, and might not climb out for the rest of 2008. Chris Duncan down, Joe Mather up. Could Mather be the piece that rounds out a powerful outfield? Or could he...   Continue Reading

Rockies Sign Glendon Rusch

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies have signed lefty Glendon Rusch to a minor league deal. Rusch missed all of the 2007 season due to a blood clot in his lung. He struggled with his control in 19.2 innings with the Padres this year. Rusch joins some familiar names in the Sky Sox (Triple A) rotation: John Koronka, Josh Towers, Valerio De Los Santos, and Franklin Morales. It looks like Cedrick Bowers has replaced Victor Zambrano in that rotation. Renck also wonders whether the Rockies and Blue Jays could be a match given Colorado's outfield...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Rusch, Griffey, Myers, Brewers

A few more notes for your ogling... This morning we told you that Glendon Rusch declined his assignment to AAA and chose to become a free agent. Troy E. Renck says that the Rockies are already expressing interest in the lefty. Brewers owner Mark Attanasio has given Doug Melvin permission to trade for a starting pitcher noting that there is enough flexibility in the payroll to take on another contract. However, Attanasio also indicated that it was too early to explore those possibilities. The Delaware News Journal takes a look at this past offseason's crop of free agent starting pitchers...   Continue Reading

Odds & Ends: Padres, Maddux, Anthony Reyes

A few Odds & Ends with a San Diego focus: Tom Krasovic of the Union Tribune notes that the Padres are close to completing a trade for a reliever with "good stuff" according to Kevin Towers. It does not say who it is, but it should be someone better than LHPs Joe Thatcher, who would be sent down, and Glendon Rusch, who was just outrighted yesterday. Rusch has 3 days to accept his assignment. He most likely will as he signed a minor league deal after missing all of '07. Stay tuned to see who the Padres acquire. Any guesses?...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Barrett, Koufax, Santana

A few notes from this evening... Michael Barrett and the Padres avoided arbitration, arriving at a $3.5MM deal. A little less than I expected given his $4.6MM salary in '07. If some team acquires Barrett on the cheap he could bounce back if he's comfortable. Wasn't long ago he was one of the better-hitting catchers in the game. Is there even a slight chance he wouldn't embarrass himself back at the hot corner? Great ShysterBall post in reference to Curt Schilling's attempt to call out Roger Clemens. Sandy Koufax did not do steroids. Derrick Goold looks at how David Eckstein..   Continue Reading

Astros Looking At Rusch, Jennings

UPDATE, 12-17-07 at 7:50pm: Rusch's agency verified to my via email that he became a Padre as of Friday. FROM 12-17-07 at 3:39pm: The Houston Chronicle's Brian McTaggart notes the Astros' interest in starters Glendon Rusch and Jason Jennings. Wait a minute, you're saying, didn't Tim Brown report on Friday that Rusch signed a minor-league deal with San Diego? Indeed he did. However, Tag says he hasn't signed yet and Houston still has an offer on the table. The Astros would like to get Jennings back on a one-year, incentivized deal. Jennings wants two years, despite his lost '07. Not..   Continue Reading

Padres Sign Glendon Rusch

A small signing this evening, as the Padres inked 33 year-old southpaw Glendon Rusch to a minor-league deal. He missed the entire '07 season due to a blood clot. Add this to the recent Shawn Estes signing, and I wonder whether the Padres are content with their depth for the fifth starter spot. They've also got Clay Hensley and Justin Germano on the roster to compete for that job. My guess is that this means the Padres won't pursue Mark Prior aggressively   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Bonds, Rusch, Iguchi, Nathan

The Winter Meetings are over and I have a nice case of carpal tunnel. Let's round up some odds and ends anyway, I can always type with my toes. In a chat today, Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus said the only team besides the A's with a modicum of interest in Barry Bonds is the Cardinals (a week ago). Couple of Phils notes per Scott Lauber. Glendon Rusch asked for a big league deal and a rotation spot, neither of which the Phils are keen on. Also that Tadahito Iguchi waiver? No chance. Joel Sherman noted today that the Twins..   Continue Reading

Rockies Rumors: Iguchi, Grudzielanek, Rusch, Fukumori

UPDATE, 12-6-07 at 12:20am: Troy Renck says that if the Rox do acquire a second baseman, Dan O'Dowd is ready to trade both Clint Barmes and Jamey Carroll. The Cardinals, Marlins, and Indians would be suitors for those two. FROM 12-5-07 at 10:09pm: MLB.com's Thomas Harding checks in with a slew of new Rockies rumors. The Rockies have their eye on Tadahito Iguchi and could offer him a two-year deal. However, Iguchi is craving a contract similar to Kaz Matsui's three-year, $16.5MM pact. Should one bad contract beget another one? Mark Grudzielanek can be had, but the Rox aren't interested...   Continue Reading

Reds, Astros, Cards Interested In Rusch

Glendon Rusch is attempting a comeback, and the Reds, Astros, and Cardinals are interested. Rusch played under the Reds' Dusty Baker in Chicago. This morning Tom Krasovic said the Padres were close to terms with Rusch, so I guess we'll see. The Royals are another club that has been linked to him   Continue Reading

ESPN's Latest: Sosa, Prior, Kuroda, Reyes

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 11:19pm: Ah, the truth comes out. Sammy Sosa's people approached the Royals, but they weren't interested. FROM 12-4-07 at 3:17pm: ESPN has a huge team at the Meetings; here are some tidbits that haven't appeared elsewhere on MLBTR. Enrique Rojas says the Royals have interest in Sammy Sosa. Could that indicate a Mark Teahen trade is in the works also? Teahen is expected to move to first base to accomodate Jose Guillen, which would push Billy Butler to DH. But Sammy can only DH. Buster Olney says the Rangers and Padres are in on Mark Prior. The..   Continue Reading

Royals Rumors: Cordero, Silva, Guillen

Some good info surfacing regarding the Royals, as usual courtesy of the KC Star's Bob Dutton. While Joakim Soria will remain in the pen, the Royals want to add more relief help. They could re-sign David Riske, and even plan to contact Francisco Cordero's agent (Bean Stringfellow). Bringing back Octavio Dotel is also being considered, though Soria would remain the closer. Ron Mahay is on the radar. It's thought that he'll require something close to a three-year, $12MM deal as one of the better southpaw relievers out there. Riske wants a deal like that too. Dayton, just take the draft..   Continue Reading

Glendon Rusch To Attempt Comeback

Southpaw Glendon Rusch missed the 2007 season because of a blood clot in his lung. He's one of the good guys in baseball, and we're rooting for him here at MLBTR. According to his agency, Rusch is ready to go and has declared free agency. The 33 year-old will throw a bullpen session for teams on Friday. He's been throwing for a couple of months now. Rusch has never had an arm problem, and he's lost weight recently. He's been throwing 86-88 with good command and should be considered for open fifth starter gigs. At worst, he makes a good..   Continue Reading
