Yahoo's Gordon Edes updates us on the Cardinals' search for a bat and more in his most recent column. Here are the details: The Cardinals aren't interested in Miguel Tejada, but they are looking to add offensive help at third or in the outfield. Some have criticized the Pirates for taking Tony Sanchez fourth overall, but Edes hears they chose him because they like his tools and believe he's polished enough to reach the majors before most players in the draft. The Nationals would move Elijah Dukes or Lastings Milledge. Ryan Zimmerman is their only untouchable player. The Rangers have...

Some links for Tuesday morning... Be here at 2pm CST for this week's chat. Chico Harlan of the Washington Post says one Nationals official broke into a broad grin after describing Bryce Harper's ability. In a piece that's worth reading completely, Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette tries to determine when the Pirates expect to contend. Some within the organization can imagine results by 2011 and Neal Huntington says Pirates fans won't have to wait until 2015. Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram says top pick Matt Purke expects to complete a deal with the Rangers. Richard Justice of...

Links for Friday... RotoAuthority asks: who is the next Carlos Quentin? The Cubs may trade or lose whoever doesn't win their backup catcher job, Paul Bako or Koyie Hill (according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times). By the way, Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker says the Cubs signed a Korean high school outfielder named Don-Yeop Kim. Hanley Ramirez was upset about the Marlins' new hair and jewelry policies, but cooled down after meeting with the team's brass. Excellent Stephen Strasburg profile by Lee Jenkins of Sports Illustrated (hat tip to Rob Neyer). Rays Index talked to Nick Cafardo of...

Links for Monday... Matt Eddy of Baseball America has the minor league transactions, including the Dodgers' signing of J.D Durbin. Marc Lancaster of the Tampa Tribune says Rays Rule 5 pick Derek Rodriguez, a reliever, has been returned to the White Sox. Yahoo's David Brown talked to Carlos Pena about many topics, including his agent Scott Boras. According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Padres received pitcher Luke Gregerson as the player to be named later in the Khalil Greene deal. The other player the Padres received, the now-injured Mark Worrell, was also a minor league closer....

Links for Saturday... At the bottom of an interesting article about baseball's youth movement, Peter Gammons adds that the Red Sox-Marlins Hanley Ramirez discussions "lasted all of 20 seconds" according to a Marlins official. Yahoo's Tim Brown speculates that the Nationals could have interest in Andruw Jones. I can see the Blue Jays taking him on if they can make it work financially. Roch Kubatko cautions fans from reading too much into discussions about a Brian Roberts-Gavin Floyd trade. Peter Schmuck hasn't heard much on the Roberts front, but wouldn't mind seeing the Orioles trade him for Floyd, even if...

According to Jon Heyman and Tom Verducci of SI.com, "the Red Sox made a play to re-acquire Marlins superstar Hanley Ramirez after losing out to the rival Yankees for star free agent Mark Teixeira." The Marlins listened, but no agreement was reached and talks have ended. The Marlins coveted players such as Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz, but they'd need to be bowled over to trade their young shortstop. Ramirez, 25, is signed at a discount through the 2014 season. Juan C. Rodriguez says trading him would make no sense for the Marlins.

Jayson Stark's latest Rumblings and Grumblings column is chock full of information. Stark rattles off Dan Uggla, Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, B.J. Upton, Justin Upton, Russell Martin, Zack Greinke, Prince Fielder, Felix Hernandez, Jeff Francoeur, Jonathan Papelbon, Kevin Youkilis, and Dustin Pedroia as youngsters who do not have long-term deals in the works. With Uggla and Greinke, the opposition seems more on the team's side. With Hamels and Howard neither side wants a long-term deal. With the rest, the player is resisting. The Padres' top trading chip is probably Brian Giles, though a deal would further deplete a weak offense....

Hanley Ramirez's six-year, $70MM deal will be officially announced Saturday. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro has the details of the contract. Basically the deal pays $23.5MM for Ramirez's three arbitration years and $46.5MM for his first three years of free agency. It's also been confirmed that the deal lacks no-trade provisions. I know we always label these young-player long-term deals as team-friendly. But this one takes the cake. That's not a knock on Ramirez - if I had his talents I'd certainly exchange maximum dollars for immediate security. How about you?

Time to round 'em up... Rob Neyer guesses B.J. Upton is the next to get a long-term deal from the Rays. Back on April 24th, Jayson Stark wrote that the Upton family "has its own ideas about the market value of both brothers." Expect a Hanley Ramirez press conference today, or this weekend at the latest. Tribe Report walks us through the Edward Salcedo confusion. Yorvit Torrealba's agent has filed a grievance against the Mets over their nearly-signed three-year deal. Jon Heyman says nothing's imminent with Ken Griffey Jr. Buster Olney wrote today that the Mariners are "not especially gung-ho"...

Let's hit up Ken Rosenthal's latest Full Count video: Rosenthal thinks the Tigers should sign Barry Bonds. Sure, Detroit already has too many DHs, and Bonds wouldn't help their need for improved defense and speed, but they absolutely need another lefthanded bat. Rosenthal points out that the team is 11-20 in games started by RHP. As for the fear of a clubhouse problem, Gary Sheffield - who has feuded with Bonds in the past - has no problem and I would presume that the other players, particularly veterans, on the Tigers would echo that sentiment. The 3-year contract extension for...
