Edgar Renteria Rumors

Giants Closing In On Renteria, Talking Cantu Trade

7:51pm: Jon Paul Morosi also talked to Meister, who said the Giants are making "substantial progress" toward signing Renteria. 4:49pm: SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Giants asked the Brewers about J.J. Hardy, but Milwaukee doesn't want to move him. So Brian Sabean moved on to Cantu. 4:12pm: Brian Sabean told reporters he hopes to sign a free agent infielder later this week. 3:42pm: Jon Heyman chimes in; he also thinks a two-year deal could be completed soon. Heyman says the Giants have yet to decide whether to target C.C. Sabathia, Mark Teixeira, or Manny Ramirez. Are we seeing a shift...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Dunn, Burrell, Manny

6:16pm: MLB.com's Mark Bowman says the Braves are not interested in Dunn because they seek a right-handed bat. Does that rule out Raul Ibanez as well? 1:51pm: The latest from Ken Rosenthal: The Yankees, Rays, Red Sox, and Phillies are pursuing free agent outfielder Rocco Baldelli. Now that Adam Dunn wasn't offered arbitration, the market is starting to take shape. The Braves, Mariners, and Nationals are interested, and the Dodgers and Angels consider him a fallback option. How about Dunn and Russell Branyan in the same lineup? Rosenthal considers the Yankees another possibility. Teams considering Pat Burrell, who was also...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Sabathia, Furcal, Peavy

A few notes from Jayson Stark's latest blog post... Stark believes the possibility of C.C. Sabathia signing with the Giants is alive, and the Giants have talked to the pitcher's agent. Such a signing might compel Brian Sabean to remove Matt Cain's "untouchable" tag, in Stark's opinion. Earlier today Ken Rosenthal suggested the Giants were a dark horse for C.C. The Giants offered three years to Rafael Furcal. He wants four, so they switched their attention to Edgar Renteria. The Giants want a shorter-term deal so their own prospects can take over within a few years. Stark notes that the...   Continue Reading

Tigers Rumors: Renteria, Wilson, Zaun, Treanor

Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press has the latest on the Tigers. GM Dave Dombrowski wasn't sure Edgar Renteria would turn down an offer of arbitration, and he didn't feel two draft picks were worth the risk. Discussions with the Pirates regarding Jack Wilson are ongoing, but concrete proposals have yet to be exchanged. The Tigers have interest in free agent catcher Gregg Zaun. Zaun, 38 in April, hit .237/.340/.359 in 288 plate appearances this year while earning $3.75MM. Morosi adds that the Tigers also like Marlins catcher Matt Treanor, but no deal is imminent. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro...   Continue Reading

Tigers Decline To Offer Arb To Renteria

3:31pm: Andrew Baggarly thinks Renteria and the Giants are "gravitating toward each other" now that he won't cost a draft pick. Baggarly believes the Giants might be ready to back off from Furcal over health concerns. 2:42pm: According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers declined to offer arbitration to Edgar Renteria today. The risk of the Type A free agent accepting must've been too strong. Since he will not cost any draft picks, Renteria now becomes more appealing to potential suitors. Rafael Furcal is neither Type A nor B, so he carries the same appeal....   Continue Reading

Dodgers Talks For Wilson At Impasse

WEDNESDAY, 10:34pm: Rosenthal actually posted this update last night, but we're adding it now. He says the Pirates sought Hu, Delwyn Young, and a third player for Wilson. That caused talks to grind to a halt. Rosenthal added that the Dodgers are showing mild interest in Edgar Renteria but not Orlando Cabrera. TUESDAY, 6:34pm: Rosenthal says the Pirates wanted Hu and two other young players, and the Dodgers balked at the price. 6:06pm: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Dodgers are again considering trading for Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson. The Bucs would like to receive Chin-Lung Hu in return to replace...   Continue Reading

Cards Make Offer To Rhodes

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals made an offer to lefty reliever Arthur Rhodes. Rhodes' agent says nine teams expressed interest, and a handful made offers. More offers are forthcoming for the 39 year-old. Cardinals GM John Mozeliak continues to hammer out the details of a contract with Trever Miller; he hopes to add two lefties to the pen. Goold says the Cardinals are also considering two righthanded relievers in Brandon Lyon and Jason Isringhausen. Three other teams have expressed interest in Isringhausen, who would like to regain his job as the Cardinals' closer. The...   Continue Reading

Giants-Renteria Rumor False

6:00pm: Additional denials have come in via Andrew Baggarly and Derrick Goold. Baggarly says Renteria is the Giants' fallback for Furcal. He notes that the Tigers would've loved to see Renteria sign today, as they're unlikely to offer him arbitration. Goold learned that Meister will double back with the Cardinals before Renteria signs elsewhere. 5:02pm: Via an email from ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, Renteria's agent Barry Meister says the report of Renteria signing is not true. Renteria is at home in Colombia; nothing is close. 3:59pm: Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle talked to a Giants source who said the...   Continue Reading

Giants Negotiating With Renteria

MLB.com's Chris Haft talked to Edgar Renteria's agent Jeff Lane, who said he's actively negotiating with the Giants. At least six teams are interested in Renteria, but his future is tied to Rafael Furcal. Furcal is expected to sign first, and the shortstops share many of the same suitors. The Giants also have serious interest in Orlando Hudson. It'd be surprising to see them sign two middle infielders though.   Continue Reading

Orioles Targeting Izturis

According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles have contacted shortstop Cesar Izturis' agent to express interest. Zrebiec believes the 28 year-old defensive whiz tops their list. Izturis earned $3.05MM this year. The Orioles have also had trade discussions for Khalil Greene and Bobby Crosby. The Padres requested Garrett Olson for Greene, and the Orioles passed. Zrebiec says the Orioles are not interested in Rafael Furcal, Orlando Cabrera, or Edgar Renteria. If they spend big on a free agent, it'll be A.J. Burnett or Mark Teixeira. However, Furcal's agent Paul Kinzer said yesterday that the O's are one...   Continue Reading

Giants Interested In Hudson

According to Chris Haft of MLB.com, the Giants are seriously interested in signing Orlando Hudson. The Giants have already signed Jeremy Affeldt and Haft says their big off-season plans could also include C.C. Sabathia, Edgar Renteria, Rafael Furcal and Juan Cruz. Kevin Frandsen, who's played mostly at second base, could play third if the Giants obtain Hudson. The Indians, Mets, Yankees and Dodgers all seem interested in Hudson too.   Continue Reading

Tigers Rumors: Zumaya, Hoffman, Miner

Joel Zumaya might be ready to pitch this spring--and he might not be, reports Jason Beck of MLB.com. Tigers assistant GM Al Avila calls it "basically a week-to-week, month-to-month situation." That's enough to force the Tigers to come up with a backup plan for their relief corps. Adding Trevor Hoffman as closer may be at the center of that plan. Brandon Lyon is another option for the ninth, says Beck. Zach Miner is mentioned as an in-house option for the bullpen, but likely wouldn't close. He may need to move to the rotation, pending an update on the futures of...   Continue Reading

Rafael Furcal Rumors: Monday

8:04pm: Furcal is "shocked and excited" about possible interest from the Braves, though Yunel Escobar would have to be traded first. Furcal already has a three-year, $39MM offer on the table from an unknown team. Kinzer says it might be a few weeks before his client signs. MLB.com's Chris Haft says the Giants are also considering Orlando Cabrera and Edgar Renteria as shortstop options. However, those players might cost the Giants their second-round draft pick (Furcal wouldn't). The Giants are also still pondering making a play for one of the Big Three free agents, according to Jon Heyman. 1:26pm: Mychael...   Continue Reading

Odds & Ends: Kawakami, Renteria, Johnson, Ohman

A number of Odds & Ends for your weekend update: From Japanball.com, Kenshin Kawakami is filing for free agency. Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports the Cubs are considering Randy Johnson for a one year deal. The 45 year old lefty is a career 13-0 against the Cubs, 4-0 at Wrigley, and needs 5 wins to reach 300. The Cardinals are moving in on free agent Will Ohman, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, and are reportedly interested in Jeremy Affeldt and Arthur Rhodes. In the same article, Goold suggests the Cards will stall on...   Continue Reading

Cardinals Infield Rumors

5:06pm: MLB.com's Matthew Leach says a team source was "somewhat nonplussed" by the report of the Lopez offer, and Lopez says he has not been informed of anything. Leach says mutual interest is clear with Edgar Renteria, but the Cardinals were not among the ten teams to have expressed interest in Rafael Furcal. 2:32pm: According to Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals have already made an offer to free agent infielder Felipe Lopez. Lopez, a Scott Boras client, is said to desire a multiyear contract on the strength of this year's resurgent 169 plate appearances with the...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: El Duque, Tazawa, Ausmus

Links for Tuesday. Be sure to check back on Odds and Ends posts, as I update them throughout the day with minor links. The Jays may no longer have A.J. Burnett under contract, but they continued their claiming frenzy by adding pitcher Les Walrond. The A's re-hired Jason Giambi's strength coach. Does it mean anything? The Cardinals remain intrigued by the idea of bringing Edgar Renteria back. The Dodgers bought out catcher Gary Bennett for $50K; he's a free agent now. Mike Cameron thinks C.C. Sabathia has a good chance of re-signing with the Brewers. He says Sabathia could be...   Continue Reading

Cardinals' Offseason Plans

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch explains the Cardinals' offseason plans. The areas of concern: middle infield, lefthanded relief, and perhaps the rotation (maybe a swingman type pitcher). The Cards would also like an impact bat to protect Albert Pujols, but that is of lower priority. Strauss says the Cardinals will investigate the price for Brian Fuentes and Joe Beimel. They'll also consider bringing Edgar Renteria back to St. Louis on a one-year deal worth considerably less than $10MM. The Cards should have $20MM+ to spend in total. As for trade chips, young catcher Bryan Anderson could be one....   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Jacobs, Howard, Renteria

Links for Friday... The A's claimed infielder Joe Dillon off waivers from the Brewers. Dave Cameron criticizes the Royals' acquisition of Mike Jacobs. ESPN's Keith Law also panned the move, suggesting Jacobs was a non-tender candidate for the Marlins. Peter Abraham breaks down the different types of hot stove stories and sources. Derrick Goold looks at Ryan Howard's arbitration case. MLB.com's Chris Haft talked to various scouts about Matt Cain's trade value. Edgar Renteria hopes to remain in Detroit, saying "Next year, we are going to win everything." ESPN's Tim Kurkjian names his top ten offseason storylines. Ken Davidoff says...   Continue Reading

Orioles Considering Cabrera, Furcal, Renteria

According to Roch Kubatko of MASN Online, the Orioles have internally discussed free agent shortstops Orlando Cabrera, Rafael Furcal, and Edgar Renteria. They're also considering trade possibilities. The Orioles' #5 overall draft pick next year is protected, but they'd have to surrender their second rounder if they sign Cabrera or Renteria. The market for Furcal will be robust if he doesn't re-sign with the Dodgers. Possible names on the trade market: J.J. Hardy, Julio Lugo, Jack Wilson, Khalil Greene, Ronny Cedeno, and Chin-lung Hu.   Continue Reading

Tigers Decline Renteria's Option

The announcement was made a month ago, but today the Tigers officially declined Edgar Renteria's $12MM option for 2009 (or $11MM - I've seen conflicting reports). It's possible the Tigers re-sign Renteria at a lower salary. Will they offer him arbitration, since he profiles as a Type A free agent? Eddie Bajek notes that Renteria would prefer the Tigers decline to offer, making him more attractive to other teams.   Continue Reading

Tigers To Decline Renteria's Option

John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press has the news - Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said today the team will decline shortstop Edgar Renteria's $12MM option for 2009. They'll pay the $3MM buyout instead. Next question: will the Tigers offer him arbitration? Renteria is a Type A free agent, and he'll be less attractive to the other teams if he'll cost draft picks. Dombrowski will be looking to improve the club at catcher, shortstop, and closer next year (though Francisco Rodriguez will be too costly). Dombrowski debunked the rumor about the Tigers reducing payroll - he says it won't be...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Renteria, Francoeur, Pedro

Today's links... Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press wonders if Edgar Renteria has played his last game as a Tiger. He notes the possibility of buying Renteria out for $3MM and inking him to a cheaper one-year deal. Ken Rosenthal's awards picks. MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan asks five questions the Rangers will tackle this winter. Also, take a look at our offseason outlook. ESPN's Buster Olney points to the Yankees' poor drafting as the main factor in their decline. Craig Brown of Royals Authority doesn't see a fit with Jeff Francoeur. The Fielding Bible's plus/minus system rates Royals shortstop...   Continue Reading

Tigers Rumors: Leyland, Farnsworth, Renteria

The latest hot stove buzz around the Tigers... Manager Jim Leyland doesn't expect the team to sign big-name free agents this winter. He even brought up the idea of signing minor-league free agents to help the '09 club. As you know, it's been rumored the Tigers may need to move Magglio Ordonez to get down to a targeted $100MM payroll. Eddie Bajek of Detroit Tigers Thoughts got some nice coverage in the Detroit Free Press for his work cracking the Elias code. Jon Paul Morosi's article centers on the likelihood of Kyle Farnsworth losing Type B status while Ivan Rodriguez...   Continue Reading

Cafardo's Latest: Salty, Renteria, Pudge

Let's take a look at the latest column from Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. The Red Sox are "intrigued" by Rangers catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia (I believe they have been for some time). Jamey Newberg would like to see Clay Buchholz in a Rangers uniform, but admits the deal would have to be expanded. The Red Sox will not have to pay the $3MM buyout on Edgar Renteria if the Tigers decline his $11MM option for '09. The free agent market for shorstops is weak, but the Tigers will probably look elsewhere given Renteria's .269/.318/.375 showing. Cafardo wonders if Jason...   Continue Reading

Tigers Offseason Plans

John Paul Morosi discusses the Tigers' potential plans for the offseason. They spent roughly $134MM on a fourth place team this season and project at another $130MM next year assuming no free agent signings or extensions. According to Morosi, the Tigers can sustain $110MM payroll based on revenue alone. Owner Mike Ilitch already approved a $40MM payroll increase to make this year's team, so can they possibly go any higher? It doesn't seem likely. Still, Morosi notes that Ilitch wants a World Series and the Tigers need pitching to get it. After Justin Verlander and Armando Galarraga, the Tigers have tied...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Tejada, Laird, Renteria, Sherrill

New one from Ken Rosenthal... The Padres will ask Greg Maddux again to consider accepting a trade to a team not located on the West Coast. The Dodgers haven't shown interest. One big league source told Rosenthal that the Astros have had "absolutely no dialogue" about Miguel Tejada. The Marlins are the most aggressive suitor for Gerald Laird. The Brewers, Reds, and Yankees are also in on the Rangers' catcher. Rosenthal points out a Doug Melvin connection - Melvin acquired Laird as the Rangers' GM back in '02. [UPDATE: Rangers guru Jamey Newberg tells me that it was actually John...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Dodgers, Braves, Fuentes, Downs

Today we have a new column from SI.com's Jon Heyman. Heyman writes of turmoil within the Dodgers' front office. Owner Frank McCourt is meddling, and assistant GM Logan White has "unusual say-so." Shortstop targets for the Dodgers include Jack Wilson, Orlando Cabrera, and Edgar Renteria. However, it is unclear which young Dodgers are available. Braves decision-makers remain split on whether to buy or sell, with manager Bobby Cox leading the buy side. Asking prices for relievers remain high, though Heyman seems to think Brian Fuentes wouldn't cost the Mets much more than Aaron Heilman. Heyman relays a report from Joe...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Mets, Cardinals, Phillies, Tigers

Today's links. Mets manager Jerry Manuel expects a move, most likely for a left fielder. Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein wrote Saturday about the remaining unsigned draft picks. BP is free for all this week, by the way. Cardinals GM John Mozeliak faces a tough situation - he doesn't have much time before the trade deadline to determine what Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright will contribute. Don McKee believes the Phillies should sell the farm for Matt Holliday and Brian Fuentes. Jon Paul Morosi notes that the Tigers might be able to trade Ivan Rodriguez in August. He also says that...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Harang, Bedard, Hardy, Weeks, McLouth

Brand new column from ESPN's Jayson Stark. Stark explains why he feels the trade deadline is overrated. I guess it all depends on what you expect from it. You may recall Walt Jocketty's Reds untouchables list from a few weeks ago. It did not include Aaron Harang. While the Reds might listen on Harang, there wouldn't be any kind of discount. The Mariners have pushed Erik Bedard to the backburner, focusing on shopping other veterans. They're also not dying to move Raul Ibanez at the moment. The Brewers might be willing to include J.J. Hardy or Rickie Weeks in a...   Continue Reading

Odds & Ends: Hill, Lowe, Renteria

Some musings from the central divisions: In this piece by Gordon Wittenmyer covering Carlos Zambrano's shoulder strain, the Cubs may be forced to shut down Rich Hill. Hill failed to get through the first inning for Triple-A Iowa start on Friday, recording 2 outs while giving up 6 ER and 4 BB, and the Cubs simply want to give him an extended mental break. This may turn up the flames even further on the Cubs pursuit of a front line starter. For what it's worth, Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press says Derek Lowe is unlikely to become...   Continue Reading

Tigers Acquire Edgar Renteria

Big news! The Tigers made an early strike to improve the shortstop position by acquiring Edgar Renteria for youngsters Jair Jurrjens and Gorkys Hernandez. The Tigers will owe Renteria roughly $6.3MM in '08 and have a good chance of exercising his $11MM option for '09. They've added a five-win shortstop in Renteria. The price was reasonable. Jurrjens turns 22 in January and can probably jump into the Braves' rotation. He throws in the 90-93 with good control. Kevin Goldstein projected him as a future middle-rotation guy. The one concern is that shoulder inflammation surfaced in August of this year. Hernandez..   Continue Reading

Tigers Hot Stove Talk

Lynn Henning of the Detroit News runs down all of the big names rumored to be possibilities for the Tigers this winter and assesses the likelihood of each. It's a well-written article so be sure to read it. Here are the players, ranked by the percent chance of playing for Detroit next year: Kenny Rogers - 90% Todd Jones - 80% Geoff Jenkins - 75% Edgar Renteria - 50% Jack Wilson - 30% Francisco Cordero - 5% Alex Rodriguez - 3% Mariano Rivera - 3% Raul Ibanez - 0.5% Torii Hunter - 0% Andruw Jones - 0% Henning believes Jenkins..   Continue Reading

Cardinals Have Work To Do

Joe Strauss has had several insightful articles lately about the future of the Cardinals. Let's discuss. The Cardinals have $83.8MM committed to 12 players for 2008. Even worse, they don't know what they're going to get out of Scott Rolen, Jim Edmonds, Chris Carpenter, Juan Encarnacion, and Mark Mulder. They are spending $45MM on those five and may get very little production. Next year's payroll may approach $115MM on the high end, but that doesn't mean the Cards have $30MM to burn. Their 0-3 guys will earn roughly $5MM in aggregate, and the arbitration-eligible group may run another $5MM even..   Continue Reading

Carlos Guillen to Play 1B Next Season

The Tigers anticipated this. Carlos Guillen's okay with it. Despite signing Guillen in March to a 4 year deal for $48MM to begin next season, the shortstop is going to be moving across the diamond sooner than expected to play first base. The move is designed to protect his knees from the physical stresses of SS. Tim argued that 4/48 was a bargain as long as he remained the Tigers' shortstop. Unfortunately, it appears Manager Jim Leyland has had to talk him into moving to first, despite Guillen's condition last week that the Tigers had to bring in a gold..   Continue Reading

Let's Make A Deal: Edgar Renteria

I've been getting a lot of emails about Edgar Renteria. Let's take a look at the situation. In my opinion, the Braves need to import one solid, dependable starting pitcher. Free agency presents plenty of options - a few dependable, most not: Matt Clement, Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia, Randy Wolf, Jaret Wright, Jason Jennings, Koji Uehara, Carlos Silva, Livan Hernandez, Tom Glavine. Same deal with trade options: Carl Pavano, Jose Contreras, Kei Igawa, Matt Morris, Jon Garland, Bronson Arroyo, Nate Robertson, maybe Joe Blanton. Back to Renteria - can we find a match? The White Sox, Tigers, and A's might..   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest Videos: Teixeira, Dye, Garland

Ken Rosenthal has a couple of recent videos up at FOXSports. Check 'em out. Some highlights: The Mark Teixeira talks are at a standstill; the Braves and Angels are reluctant to improve their offers. The Dodgers are said to be out of the picture. Daniels, Schuerholz, Stoneman - which one blinks first? I'll say Daniels; he'll go with Atlanta's best offer. Jermaine Dye is Plan B for the Angels, but as you know the Red Sox still have interest. Jon Garland can be had, but Kenny Williams' price is sky-high. The Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Mets, and Braves all have interest. The..   Continue Reading

Teixeira Talk Heating Up

UPDATE: Jon Heyman of SI.com has a nice rundown of the Teixeira suitors. His sources seem to indicate that the chances of a trade are now better than Rosenthal's 50/50. Good point raised by Heyman and many commenters - even if the Braves wanted to trade Escobar, the Rangers don't really have a need for a middle infielder. UPDATE 2: Jim Molony of MLB.com says the Red Sox are the frontrunner. The Rangers have scouted all of their major pitching prospects. Ken Rosenthal has the latest on Mark Teixeira, who is now 50/50 to be dealt according to one source..   Continue Reading

Garland For Renteria Discussed?

Found via Buster Olney's blog: Peter Gammons suggested that the White Sox and Braves have discussed a Jon Garland for Edgar Renteria swap. Renteria, soon to turn 32, is hitting better this year than he ever has. He's quite a bargain for Atlanta, because the Red Sox are footing much of the bill. Assuming Boston's $8MM contribution was spread evenly for 2006-08, the Braves are paying Renteria about 6.66MM this year and the same in 2008. Renteria also has an $11MM option for 2009 on which Boston would pay the $3MM buyout if necessary. At present it seems very likely..   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Lohse, Hunter, Contreras

The latest trade and signing rumors from Ken Rosenthal: Rosenthal believes Alex Rodriguez's ability to play shortstop could increase the number of suitors. Take a look at the free agents - there may not be a single viable option at short this winter. Still, the number of suitors for Rodriguez is severely limited by his massive contract requirement. Not too many clubs aside from the Yankees and Red Sox can get in on $240MM over eight years or whatever. The lack of available, reasonably priced shortstops could compel the Braves and Orioles to aggressively shop Edgar Renteria and Miguel Tejada...   Continue Reading

Red Sox Send Renteria and $11MM for Andy Marte

Today, the Red Sox sent shortstop Edgar Renteria and $11MM for third baseman Andy Marte. That's got to be a record for Martes traded in one day. I don't think it was a bad move by the Braves, considering that they'll have a decent shortstop for three years at less than half the price of Rafael Furcal. On the other hand, Marte has the potential be a star. I know, "potential" is a loaded word. But when a player hits .275/.372/.506 in Triple A at age 21, it screams "future star." Marte was ranked the best prospect in baseball by..   Continue Reading
