Kenny Rogers Rumors
By Alex Walsh [November 19, 2008 at 7:44pm CST]
Joel Zumaya might be ready to pitch this spring--and he might not be, reports Jason Beck of MLB.com. Tigers assistant GM Al Avila calls it "basically a week-to-week, month-to-month situation." That's enough to force the Tigers to come up with a backup plan for their relief corps. Adding Trevor Hoffman as closer may be at the center of that plan. Brandon Lyon is another option for the ninth, says Beck. Zach Miner is mentioned as an in-house option for the bullpen, but likely wouldn't close. He may need to move to the rotation, pending an update on the futures of...

Jon Paul Morosi at the Detroit Free Press writes that Kenny Rogers has not ruled out pitching again in 2009. Rogers, who will turn 44 in November, says his arm feels stronger than it has in the past, and that his hip injury from the 2008 season has healed. "I know I can pitch. I could go out and have a great year next year. It can happen." Rogers says that the Tigers' disappointing season is on the players, and not on the front office or Jim Leyland and his coaching staff. It's hard to argue with that thought, as...

John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press has the news - Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said today the team will decline shortstop Edgar Renteria's $12MM option for 2009. They'll pay the $3MM buyout instead. Next question: will the Tigers offer him arbitration? Renteria is a Type A free agent, and he'll be less attractive to the other teams if he'll cost draft picks. Dombrowski will be looking to improve the club at catcher, shortstop, and closer next year (though Francisco Rodriguez will be too costly). Dombrowski debunked the rumor about the Tigers reducing payroll - he says it won't be...

John Perrotto at Baseball Prospectus has his Every Given Sunday column up, let's take a look at what he has to say: Perrotto believes that there's a good chance that the only GM change baseball will see this offseason may be the one we already know about, as Pat Gillick has already announced his retirement. Perrotto cites Assitant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. as a likely replacement. The most likely other change is in Seattle, and cites Dodgers' Assistant GM Kim Ng as a possible replacement, which would make her the first female general manager in the game's history. Perrotto believes...

Today's random linkage... The Indians signed 21 year-old pitcher Chen-Chang Lee out of Taiwan. Anthony Castrovince has the scouting report. East Windup Chronicle says the bonus is in the $350-400K range. Kenny Rogers suggested Jim Leyland remove him from the rotation. Rogers still thinks he can pitch effectively next year at 44, however. Geoff Baker notes an extra benefit to delaying Adrian Beltre's surgery - the playing time could nudge him toward Type A status when he reaches free agency after the '09 season. Ken Davidoff of Newsday says Yu Darvish will probably not be posted this winter but could...

Here's some loose change found underneath the cushions of the hot stove couch: Kenny Rogers was scratched from his start and Buster Olney wonders if Rogers will retire after this season. Philly Inquirer columnist Bob Ford says the Phillies didn't do enough to improve the team before the trade deadline. Umpbump thinks Brett Myers has been a great trade deadline pickup – and the Phils didn't have to surrender a thing. The Royals are hoping the contract issues surrounding first baseman first round draft pick Eric Hosmer are resolved in time for him to participate in the Arizona Instructional League....

TUESDAY: Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press says Rogers and other Tigers were placed on waivers Friday. So we'll know today who cleared and who was claimed. Rogers could make sense for a contender like the Mets. Buster Olney doesn't seem him getting that far - he guesses the Yankees or Red Sox. MONDAY: According to Tom Gage of The Detroit News, it may be the end of the line for Tigers lefty Kenny Rogers. The 43 year-old has a 5.09 ERA in 161 innings, and his walk rate continues to climb after last year's jump. He's owed...

UPDATE, 11-30-07 at 10pm: The deal is believed to be for $8MM, which seems a fair price. FROM 11-30-07 at 11am: The Tigers put out a press release this morning; they've reached an agreement with Kenny Rogers on a one-year deal. I imagine it's around $9-10MM. Rogers amicably parted with Scott Boras prior to negotiating the deal himself. This takes the Tigers out of the running for various available starters such as Carlos Silva and Hiroki Kuroda

Some random rumorage before I shut it down for the evening... My 2008 MLB Free Agents list is current; take a gander. The Cardinals signed Jason LaRue to be their backup catcher. LaRue had a nice five-year trend of rising OPS, culminating with an .806 mark in 2005. Then he lost all ability to hit whatsoever. Fortunately, he can still throw guys out. The Cards also inked a couple of sweet former Rated Rookies in Dewon Brazelton and John Wasdin. The Tigers have begun chatting with Kenny Rogers again, this time with The Gambler representing himself. Don't buy that Torii..

Quick note from Danny Knobler: free agent starter Kenny Rogers has fired Scott Boras, and reiterated that the Tigers are his first priority. Not a good offseason so far for Boras. Rogers will represent himself. Jason Beck says Rogers received two contract offers through Boras from the Tigers and they were declined. I imagine now they'll get something done soon

Buster Olney's blog today had some good rumors to digest. Olney writes that the Dodgers are making a "heavy play" for Aaron Rowand. Apparently they love the idea of adding a good character guy to the clubhouse. They'd be paying $25MM for Rowand and Juan Pierre in their outfield for the next several years. The Phillies are making a "big play" for Mike Lowell. This certainly doesn't jive with the speculation that the Phils only have $10MM to spend and it's going toward pitching. By the way, Ruben Amaro Jr. ruled out the possibility of signing Torii Hunter. Olney has..

There was some speculation a few days ago that the "right circumstances" that would allow a Kenny Rogers-Rangers reunion would be an apology to management. Owner Tom Hicks erased any ambiguity on that front today, saying Rogers would have to apologize to the Rangers for them to entertain signing him. Evan Grant notes that made all sorts of apologies after his cameraman incident, but one to the Rangers was conspicuously absent. Rogers, a Scott Boras client, wants a one-year, $10MM contract. The Tigers are still atop his list, but the Rangers, Mariners, Phillies, Dodgers, and Mets could also enter the..

MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has some new info regarding the Rangers' plans this offseason. Kenny Rogers has already had three separate stints with the Rangers, the last one ending with the cameraman incident. The Rangers would like to bring him back for a fourth tour, if the price is right. One emailer speculated that the team also wouldn't mind an apology to management for the incident, also. Sullivan says the Mariners, Phillies, Dodgers, and Mets may also have Rogers on the radar. Seems like Ned Colletti is letting bygones be bygones with Scott Boras. UPDATE: Boras reiterated tonight that the Tigers..

Leave it to Scott Boras to be unsatisfied with Kenny Rogers' declarations that he will either play for the Tigers or retire. Boras told Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski yesterday that Rogers wanted to explore the open market. The Tigers remain Rogers' first choice, but Boras wants to be make sure the the 43-year old southpaw is paid at a level commensurate with his peers. To Boras that would be the Maddux-Schilling-Glavine range, which is roughly $10MM. Rogers earned $8MM in 2007, and is probably a tad less appealing than that trio. According to Jon Paul Morosi (linked above), the Mariners..

Lynn Henning of the Detroit News has some Tigers tidbits today. The Tigers want to bring Kenny Rogers back, who has said Detroit is the only place he'll play if he doesn't retire. The team will finally go with Joel Zumaya in the closer role next year, but they'd like Todd Jones around as a backup. Jones' first pick is Atlanta but it's not known if they're interested. The mustachioed closer earned $5MM this year. Henning indicates that the acquisition of Edgar Renteria will allow the Tigers to be content with a Marcus Thames/Timo Perez/Ryan Raburn combo in left field,..

Lynn Henning of the Detroit News runs down all of the big names rumored to be possibilities for the Tigers this winter and assesses the likelihood of each. It's a well-written article so be sure to read it. Here are the players, ranked by the percent chance of playing for Detroit next year: Kenny Rogers - 90% Todd Jones - 80% Geoff Jenkins - 75% Edgar Renteria - 50% Jack Wilson - 30% Francisco Cordero - 5% Alex Rodriguez - 3% Mariano Rivera - 3% Raul Ibanez - 0.5% Torii Hunter - 0% Andruw Jones - 0% Henning believes Jenkins..

Lynn Henning of the Detroit News posted a Q&A yesterday, giving his informed opinion on the Tigers' various hot stove situations. Below are some highlights. Henning expects Kenny Rogers to be with the Tigers in 2008, and I think that's the general sentiment around baseball. Rogers has already stated that it's the Tigers or retirement in 2008. I'll guess a $6MM base salary plus incentives to make $10MM possible. Henning sees the Tigers picking up Ivan Rodriguez's $13MM option for '08, for lack of a better option. Given the $3MM buyout it's kind of a like a one-year, $10MM deal...

Kenny Rogers is technically on the list of free agent starting pitchers, but teams looking to add a wily veteran will have to look elsewhere. Lynn Henning of the Detroit News quotes Rogers as saying he'll either play for the Tigers in 2008 or retire. He'll be 43 in November, after all. No doubt the Tigers would want Rogers back on a one-year deal if he can prove he's healthy. This year he's dealt with an arterial blockage in his pitching shoulder and a barking elbow. Most likely the two sides would get creative, maybe agreeing on $4MM guaranteed and..
