More links for Tuesday... Today's chat starts in an hour. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says the Astros aren't likely to hire Jeff Bagwell as the club's next manager. Former MLB managers Jim Fregosi, Buck Showalter and Manny Acta could all be considered for the job. As MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince reports, the Indians continue to discuss manager Eric Wedge's performance. An announcement about the skipper's future with the Indians should come soon after the end of the season, if not earlier. If the Indians decide to fire Wedge, Boston pitching coach John Farrell would be the favorite to replace him,...

More links as we await the next waiver trade... The Brewers put off J.J. Hardy's free agency until after 2011 by keeping him in the minors for 20 days, as Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel points out. This should boost Hardy's trade value after the season, when the Brewers will presumably listen to trade offers, now that Alcides Escobar is contributing in the majors. Randy Johnson expects to return to the Giants as a reliever, according to the AP (via FOX Sports). MLB.com's Marty Noble suggests Jayson Werth and Derrek Lee would be good fits for the Mets...

More links for the morning... One GM told Brian Lewis of the New York Post that he expects Cuban lefty Aroldis Chapman to sign for less than the $52MM that Daisuke Matsuzaka received before the 2007 season. One executive told Lewis that Chapman will need some minor league seasoning. Padres GM Kevin Towers told MLB.com's Corey Brock that the Padres tried to sign Jayson Werth a few years ago. Towers is impressed with the former catcher's athleticism in the outfield. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald hears from Marlins president David Samson that the team isn't discussing long term deals...

Links for Tuesday... Chat today, 2pm CST. RotoAuthority sums up the stats you should target in each category for your fantasy league. The Braves released pitcher Anthony Lerew, according to Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Rany Jazayerli says the Royals will be better just by subtracting Ross Gload, Tony Pena Jr., and Joey Gathright. Here's my Offseason In Review for the club, if you're interested. A's manager Bob Geren "chuckled and said no" when asked if Bobby Crosby is being showcased at third base for the Yankees, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Crosby is learning...

11:40am: SI.com's Jon Heyman has the details - Werth gets a two-year, $10MM deal. He'll get $3MM in '09 and $7MM in '10, which would've been his first free agent year. 10:09am: According to CSN Philly, the Phillies avoided arbitration with outfielder Jayson Werth by signing him to a multiyear deal. Werth was set to reach free agency after the season. Scout.com's Chuck Hixson has a source saying it's a two-year deal worth around $9MM, while Scott Lauber heard $8MM.

In addition to backing up the facts behind today's Cole Hamels story, Todd Zolecki has an update on the Phillies' remaining arbitration-eligible players. After Greg Dobbs' 2-year, $2.5MM deal, six players are left on the arb list: Ryan Howard, Ryan Madson, Shane Victorino, Joe Blanton, Jayson Werth and Chad Durbin. According to Zolecki, "The Phillies have been talking with Madson about a contract extension, but he reportedly turned down a three-year, $12 million offer." Zolecki also doesn't expect Howard's deal to be done anytime soon.

According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Phillies and Cardinals are the top suitors for Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday. The Phillies discussed Holliday and Brian Fuentes with the Rockies during the season. The Rockies have an eye on Carlos Carrasco, J.A. Happ, and Shane Victorino. Todd Zolecki believes Jayson Werth could be in the mix. The Cardinals have been aggressive, and Ryan Ludwick is their bargaining chip. Joe Strauss says the Cardinals would like to try to sign Holliday to an extension, but may not have the leverage to require a window. The Cards would like to...

Mike Tingle of ESPN 840 in Charlottesville spoke to Rays scout Mike Cubbage yesterday. Cubbage said that he plans to scout Phillies outfielder Jayson Werth, and that Werth may be available in the right deal. Werth, 29, is hitting .272/.358/.485 in 268 plate appearances (most of the damage done against lefties). Additionally, the Rays offered a package of players for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte but the Bucs chose the Yankees' offer. The Rays also looked at Jon Rauch previously, though he was not at the top of their list. And of course, the Rays would like to acquire Brian...

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies have signed Jayson Werth to a contract, pending a physical. The outfielder turns 28 in May; he was nontendered by the Dodgers. Werth played in the Baltimore and Toronto systems before a trade to L.A. He plays all three outfield positions. He was actually a catcher with Baltimore and considered a backup at times in L.A. Perhaps the Phillies would pursue the idea once again. He's had plenty of injury problems: a strain in '03, an oblique strain, two cracked ribs, and a torn elbow ligament in '04, a broken wrist from an..
