Jim Edmonds Rumors

Cubs Rumors: Teahen, Edmonds, Marquis

Earlier today I spoke with a source familiar with the Cubs' thinking, and dug up enough info for a fresh post. While Mark Teahen is a player of interest for the Cubs, they certainly won't be trading Mike Fontenot and Sean Marshall for him. The Cubs don't consider Teahen the middle of the order bat they require. Royals outfielder David DeJesus also interests the Cubs, but the source has the impression Dayton Moore would have to be overwhelmed to trade him. There seems a good chance DeJesus stays put this winter. The Cubs aren't keen on bringing Jim Edmonds back...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Phillies, Blake, Pedro

More links for Thursday... Don McKee says the Phillies should consider Jim Edmonds for the outfield. Ken Mandel has a source who says the Phillies have discussed Raul Ibanez. Mandel adds that it hardly means the Phillies plan on going after him aggressively. The Indians are keeping Casey Blake on their radar, but they're just talking for now. Rob Neyer of ESPN.com writes that the Royals' trades have them headed in the wrong direction. Nick Swisher says he would be "super excited" if the Yankees sign C.C. Sabathia. He adds that playing for the Yankees is a "dream come true."...   Continue Reading

Crasnick On Retirement Candidates

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick looks at nine veteran players and estimates their chances of retiring. He assesses the situations of Jim Edmonds, Garret Anderson, Ken Griffey Jr., Cliff Floyd, Jeff Kent, Nomar Garciaparra, Luis Gonzalez, Frank Thomas, and Moises Alou. Crasnick feels Edmonds, Anderson, Griffey, and Floyd are likely to play, while the rest are not. Of the long shots, Thomas seems most intent on playing in '09.   Continue Reading

Edmonds Plans On Playing Next Year

According to Buster Olney, Jim Edmonds intends on playing in 2009. His agent, Paul Cohen, told Olney that Edmonds is "definitely coming back." Edmonds hit .256/.369/.568 for the Cubs this year after struggling with the Padres. He'll meet with Cohen to discuss his plans in the next few days. Lou Pinella has said that he plans on platooning Reed Johnson with Kosuke Fukudome in center field in 2009. About a month ago, Edmonds was considering retirement, but Cohen says his client is ready to play again in 2009.   Continue Reading

Cubs Rumors: Fukudome, Dempster, Wood

Let's check in on the Cubs' offseason plans. Cubs manager Lou Piniella says the Cubs will move Kosuke Fukudome to center field to platoon with Reed Johnson. This move implies Jim Edmonds won't be back. Technically Edmonds could play right field, but he also needs a platoon partner. The Cubs figure to be in the market for a lefthanded hitting right fielder. Piniella expects the team to fill their holes via trade. Brian Giles, Randy Winn, and Jeremy Hermida could fit the bill. Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald reminds fans that Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee have no-trade clauses,...   Continue Reading

Hendry Signs Four-Year Extension

7:35pm: Hendry commented on all kinds of topics to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat. He sounds a little more intent on re-signing Dempster than Wood. Hendry is not sure whether Jim Edmonds will retire, but he sees Felix Pie making the team out of spring training. Cubs chairman Crane Kenney doesn't expect any major moves that would require significant increases in payroll. Kenney said a few weeks ago that he anticipated a bump in payroll. 12:13pm: According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs have extended GM Jim Hendry's contract through the 2012 season. He can now focus on free agents Ryan Dempster...   Continue Reading

Edmonds Considers Retirement

Jim Edmonds is mulling over retirement, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun Times. The 39 year old is not complaining of breaking down physically and was a starter on the Cubs postseason roster so it's evident the guy can still play. Still, as many-a-ballplayer considers at his age, Edmonds says, "I'm just trying to figure out what I want to do, what's best for my family.'' While Edmonds admitted to "soaking it in" during his final games, Wittenmyer writes: "The Cubs are expected to leave the door open for Edmonds to return but won't break the bank to...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Kershaw, Medders, Tavarez

Hopefully they'll let you leave work early today in anticipation of the holiday weekend. Before you go, here are some random links. RotoAuthority takes a look at Clayton Kershaw, who may be called up soon. Brandon Medders was DFA'd to make room for Doug Davis. Not to be mean, but the 28 year-old reliever doesn't do anything particularly well. The Glendon Rusch signing takes the Rockies out of the Julian Tavarez sweepstakes. Jayson Stark said the Brewers made a run at Tavarez a week ago. Paul Sullivan suggests that Jim Edmonds may be on a short leash in Chicago. Jon...   Continue Reading

Cubs Sign Edmonds

The Chicago Cubs have signed Jim Edmonds to a contract for the remainder of the '08 season. Edmonds, who was released by the Padres last Friday, will make about $284K, the prorated league minimum. To make room on the roster, the Cubs demoted Felix Pie to AAA. Pie was hitting .222/.286/.286. This is a move that costs the Cubs nothing and could end up with big rewards. Since Pie had minor league options, the Cubs did not have to give up a player in the hopes that Edmonds can turn his season around. Edmonds was hitting .178/.265/.233 at the time...   Continue Reading

Cubs Sign Edmonds

5:33pm: He's a Cub, pending a physical. 3:38pm: Sounds like Edmonds will become a Cub after tonight's game and may debut tomorrow. WEDNESDAY, 11:11am: Edmonds has moved from appearing poised to "about to" sign with the Cubs. Cubs fans don't seem to like the move, but it doesn't seem like anything to get worked up about. TUESDAY: Gordon Wittenmeyer of the Chicago Sun-Times says the Cubs "appear poised to sign Edmonds after he clears waivers Wednesday." MONDAY: According to Dave van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs are "exploring the possibility" of signing center fielder Jim Edmonds. This was...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Lidge, Daniel Cabrera, Bonds, Edmonds

Ken Rosenthal has a new column up. I put the Griffey info in a separate post; let's discuss the rest. Rosenthal suggests that Brad Lidge would be harder to replace than Pat Burrell, and for that reason the Phillies will make a bigger effort to re-sign him. I imagine Phillies fans would prefer that course of action. The problem? The Phillies have little chance of offering four years, according to Jayson Stark. The Rangers will face a delicate situation in coming years: moving Michael Young to a different position. The chain reaction could make Hank Blalock available. Blalock has a...   Continue Reading

Edmonds Released By Padres

FRIDAY: The speculation was accurate; Edmonds will be released today. THURSDAY: Tim Sullivan of the San Diego Union-Tribune reads between the lines and believes Jim Edmonds' time is up with the Padres. The 37 year-old center fielder is hitting just .180/.267/.236 in 102 plate appearances. His defense isn't passing muster, either. Sullivan figures Edmonds will be released soon, or perhaps the Padres will buy him some time with a DL stint. They'd have to swallow $4.75MM to sever ties. Cutting veteran dead weight seems in vogue this year.   Continue Reading

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Wells, Griffey, Olney, Tavarez, Edmonds

A lot of links today, so let's get to what is being said about some trade and signing possibilities in the Blogosphere... The Darth Boss George Brigade wants Hank Steinbrenner to sign David Wells to prove that Hank is indeed his father's son. River Ave. Blues says the Yankees are too smart to sign Wells and then goes on to list about 87 pitchers that should be given a shot in the Highlanders' rotation before Wells. Redlegs Rant feels that Ken Griffey Jr. is behind the recent stories that speculate on him being traded. Mariners Central speculates on some of...   Continue Reading

Crumbling Edmonds Makes Pads Think Trade

The Jim Edmonds Implosion Watch is on in San Diego. The centerfielder is on the shelf until the end of the month with a strained calf muscle, suffered in Thursday's spring game. Just a little more impetus for the Pads to get a deal done for an outfielder. Kevin Towers, though, says not so fast. He'll wait a week or so to see how Edmonds is progressing before pulling the trigger on any trades. Edmonds, who's in the last year of a two-year deal he signed with the Cardinals, will make $8MM this season. He's missed 97 games over the...   Continue Reading

Padres Acquire Jim Edmonds

UPDATE, 12-15-07 at 3:18pm: Krasovic has learned that the Cards sent $2MM over to the Padres in the Edmonds deal. Kevin Towers apparently pushed for more salary relief but settled there. FROM 12-14-07 at 10:32pm: According to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres have agreed to trade minor league third baseman David Freese to the Cardinals for Jim Edmonds. The Cards will also send more than a million in cash to offset some Edmonds' $8MM salary. Freese is mildly interesting for a prospect who'll be 25 in April. He's yet to reach Double A but he did..   Continue Reading

Cameron, Padres Sever Ties

The Padres and Mike Cameron will go in different directions, according to his agent. It had been said previously that Cameron and the Padres agreed on two years but couldn't meet on the amount of money. Tom Krasovic notes that the Padres have already talked to the Cardinals about Jim Edmonds. They've also got an eye on free agent Kenny Lofton. Lofton may not be a defensive asset these days, but the 40 year-old still hits righties at an .800 OPS. Scott Hairston could play center when the Padres face a southpaw. As for Cameron, the White Sox, Twins, Rangers,..   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Santana, Cabrera, Kuroda, Edmonds, Rolen

Ken Rosenthal checks in with the latest hot stove buzz around baseball. Johan Santana is Boston's only target - they're not after Dan Haren or any other starter. The talks keep slugging along. For what it's worth, Curt Schilling expects the Red Sox to get him. 36 year-old first baseman Alex Cabrera is a sleeper power threat among free agents. The former Rockie, Cub, and Diamondback has been mashing in Japan since 2001. The Nationals don't have any room for him but want him anyway. Rosenthal says A.L. clubs are looking at him as a DH candidate, also. Cabrera hit..   Continue Reading

ESPN's Latest: Sosa, Prior, Kuroda, Reyes

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 11:19pm: Ah, the truth comes out. Sammy Sosa's people approached the Royals, but they weren't interested. FROM 12-4-07 at 3:17pm: ESPN has a huge team at the Meetings; here are some tidbits that haven't appeared elsewhere on MLBTR. Enrique Rojas says the Royals have interest in Sammy Sosa. Could that indicate a Mark Teahen trade is in the works also? Teahen is expected to move to first base to accomodate Jose Guillen, which would push Billy Butler to DH. But Sammy can only DH. Buster Olney says the Rangers and Padres are in on Mark Prior. The..   Continue Reading

Cardinals Rumors: Rolen, Tejada, Edmonds

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 9:38am: Tom Haudricourt confirms that the Brewers will have access to Rolen's medical records. That the Brewers will take a look indicates they are probably serious about Rolen. FROM 12-4-07 at 12:14am: Joe Strauss has a new one in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, presumably for the Tuesday morning edition. The Cards have already met twice with the Brewers to talk about Scott Rolen. They're providing medical information to the Brewers, and appear flexible on the amount of salary they need to cover. Teams interested in Rolen can speak directly to the third baseman's doctor and surgeon. Strauss..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Tavarez, Lieber, Stewart

Another collection... A few notes from Brian Cashman...the Yanks have talked to Luis Vizcaino's agent about bringing him back. Also, they've yet to inquire on any free agent center fielders. Miguel Cabrera has been talking to Ozzie Guillen daily since the season ended. The article makes Cabrera sound like a big kid. The Red Sox have had a couple of inquiries on Julian Tavarez. Five or six teams have inquired on Shannon Stewart, who wants a two-year pact apparently. The Phillies, contrary to previous reports, are not interested in re-signing Jon Lieber. On a scale of 1 to 10, the..   Continue Reading

Edmonds Would Waive No-Trade

Joe Strauss has a new article up at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, discussing John Mozeliak's pursuit of a starting pitcher as well as the availability of two veterans. Nothing new on Scott Rolen, but Strauss did have an interesting tidbit on Jim Edmonds. Edmonds has a full no-trade clause, and his latest stance is that he'd waive it for a Southern California team only. Since the Dodgers and Angels don't need outfielders, the Padres are the one possibility. The Padres are interested if the Cards throw in some cash. Edmonds makes $8MM in '08 in the last year of his..   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Edmonds, Pierre, Guillen, Santana

ESPN's Jayson Stark always cranks out a bunch of new rumors when he writes a column. This week is no exception. Jose Reyes: going nowhere. Probably since they hope to include him in a Johan Santana deal, the Red Sox won't trade Coco Crisp until that situation is resolved. The Rangers liked Crisp, but are considering interesting alternatives: Rocco Baldelli, Jim Edmonds, and Juan Pierre. If only Ned Colletti could get someone to take his Pierre contract. Then he could sign another one almost equally as bad. Then he could trade Aaron Rowand a year from now and repeat the..   Continue Reading

Padres Look To Extend Peavy

Jake Peavy will soon add a Cy Young to his resume, and the Padres would like to explore a contract extension with him. Under his current contract, Peavy will earn $6.5MM in '08 and $11MM in '09 once he wins the award. The Padres would like to extend him for the 2010 and 2011 seasons and possibly more. Peavy realizes the Padres won't give him the $18MM+ per year he could earn on the free market. But an extension for 2010-11 in the range of $32-35MM could work. It's been assumed that any team trading for Peavy this winter would..   Continue Reading

Edmonds Would Waive No-Trade Rights

Cardinals center fielder Jim Edmonds has the right to veto any deal as a 10-and-5 player. And while the Cardinals have never asked him to approve a deal, he said recently that he'd be open-minded if the team wanted to move him. Edmonds makes another $3.66MM this year, plus $8MM in 2008. Some of this year's salary is deferred without interest until 2010-19, making it even better. I have to admit I liked the two-year $19MM pact when it was signed in November of 2006. But the Cardinals did have the choice of simply exercising Edmonds' $10MM option for '07..   Continue Reading

Cards Re-Sign Jim Edmonds

It's official - the Cards have re-signed Jim Edmonds for 2007-08. We don't know the money yet, but the average annual value is less than $10MM. That's all I need to know to know that it was a fine signing. It's a nice start; Walt Jocketty's still got plenty of work ahead of him. The focus will be starting pitching; Viva El Birdos votes for Ted Lilly at three years, $25MM. While I worry about Lilly's shoulder, there's no doubt he could succeed in the NL under the tutelage of Dave Duncan   Continue Reading

Rosenthal: Cards Close To Signing Edmonds

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Cardinals are close to signing Jim Edmonds to a two-year pact in the neighborhood of $20MM. For what it's worth, Baseball Prospectus estimates that Edmonds will be worth $17,900,000 over the 2007-08 period. Signing Edmonds would still leave roughly $15MM for Walt Jocketty to spread amongst a second baseman and two starting pitchers   Continue Reading

Rosenthal On Matsuzaka, Igawa, Edmonds

Here's a link to Ken Rosenthal's latest. Rosenthal confirms Yahoo Japan's earlier story, which indicated that the Braves had interest in Japanese southpaw Kei Igawa. A Yahoo story had mentioned that Igawa's posting would be contingent on Hanshin signing free agent Hiroki Kuroda, but Rosenthal states as fact that Igawa will be posted. In addition to Atlanta, we know that the Mariners, Dodgers, Mets, and Tigers have special interest in Igawa. Rosenthal also officially adds the Tigers to the list of teams interested in Daisuke Matsuzaka. While we know every team has scouted him, the Cubs, Angels, Royals, Yankees, Mets,..   Continue Reading

Edmonds Option To Be Declined?

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has an informative look at how the Cardinals will reshape their team this winter. Aside from a major rotation makeover, there's also the issue of Jim Edmonds's $10MM option. According to Strauss: "The Cardinals are increasingly unlikely to assume Edmonds' $10 million option for 2007, an issue complicated by the Gold Glove outfielder's ongoing struggle with post-concussion syndrome, according to club sources." I have a lot of faith in Strauss's club sources, and this has definitely been the vibe lately. Edmonds himself feels that it will be declined. I know it's been a..   Continue Reading

2007 MLB Free Agents: Jim Edmonds

Seems time to revisit the situation of St. Louis center field stalwart Jim Edmonds. You may recall a month ago, when I remarked: "Edmonds has a $10MM option for '07 with a $3MM buyout, so the Cards really just need to decide if Edmonds is worth $7MM in his age 37 season. Baseball Prospectus says he is, even if he only gets 515 plate appearances as projected. Even on the decline Edmonds is a powerful force in the lineup. However, the Fielding Bible ranks him just 32nd out of 35 center fielders over the last three years. They say that..   Continue Reading

Old Edmonds Trade Rumor Legit?

Some nice rumor-related digging was done recently over at Viva El Birdos. Lboros tracked down this comment made by Mitchel Lichtman recently: "Of course, you never know if and when a player like Edmonds will be part of a major trade. In order to stay competitive, we will eventually (soon) need to replace him in CF with either another great player (and presumably pay through the nose) or replace him with someone good (and underrated) and then upgrade at the corners and at second, and of course eventually at SS again (which is another difficult position to find bargains). We..   Continue Reading

Cardinals Nearing Huge Trade

I've got a source near the Cardinals organization telling me "something big is happening." Apparently, all company employees have received a memo threatening termination if any information is disclosed. Luckily, I'm not employed by the Cardinals, so I'm free to gossip. I dropped a line to Lboros over at Viva El Birdos, a blogger who has a finger on the pulse of the team. Lboros had an intriguing list of trade rumors and possible signings that have presented themselves within the past few weeks: Acquisition of Bobby Abreu. It is known that Abreu is on the trading block, although the..   Continue Reading
