Robinson Cano Rumors

Yankees Rumors: Teixeira, Igawa, Sabathia

The Yankees chatter died down a bit today, but here's what we've got. Joel Sherman of the New York Post notes buzz about Robinson Cano going to the Dodgers amid Yankee interest in Russell Martin and Matt Kemp. He admits it's unlikely. Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News talked to one big league exec about whether Mark Teixeira could handle the pressures of New York. Brian Cashman says nobody has asked him about Kei Igawa, who has three years and $12MM left on his contract. Cashman would not rule out the possibility of bringing back both Mike Mussina...   Continue Reading

Jake Peavy Rumors: Thursday

4:05pm: Ken Rosenthal has some of the names being offered by the Braves for Peavy. According to Rosenthal, the Braves are offering Yunel Escobar, either Jo-Jo Reyes or Charlie Morton and an unnamed player believed to be a top prospect. Rosenthal does not have any details on the Cubs' package but notes that it is likely to be "fluid". 4:00pm: Chris De Luca has updated his earlier piece and now says Dempster is seeking five years, $70MM. 3:03pm: Peter Abraham says that Kevin Towers has told Peavy that he will be traded and that negotiations have been narrowed to three...   Continue Reading

Hideki Matsui-Mariners Rumor

From Yahoo's Tim Brown: One source mentioned a potential three-way deal that would send outfielder Hideki Matsui from the New York Yankees to the Seattle Mariners for a pitching prospect, perhaps Ryan Rowland-Smith. The Yankees would package the prospect with second baseman Robinson Cano and another young player to the Rockies for Matt Holliday. Matsui has a full no-trade clause. He's owed $13MM next year, the last of his deal. He hit .294/.370/.424 this year in 378 plate appearances, missing much of the season with knee problems. He now has two surgically repaired knees, so he's questionable to play the...   Continue Reading

Yankees Rumors: Sabathia, Marte, Mussina

11:09pm: Brian Cashman sums up the Yankees' plan: "We're going to show a lot of love." 12:15pm: It's about time we check in with Yankees links. The Yankees will make their record-breaking pitch to C.C. Sabathia. If it fails, they'll move on to A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, and Oliver Perez. Joel Sherman says the Yankees could get involved on Manny Ramirez, but only if they fail to sign Mark Teixeira and manage to trade Hideki Matsui. Sherman says the Yanks are in on the catching market just to be safe, engaging the Rangers about Gerald Laird and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. They'll...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Manny, Mussina, Cano, Lowe

Ken Rosenthal's latest column at FOX Sports is jam-packed with rumors. Manny Ramirez will generate plenty of interest on the free agent market; he wants at least four years. There was a report earlier this month that Scott Boras expected to get five years. The term will be a crucial factor. Rosenthal names the Phillies, Mets, and Yankees as three teams that may pursue Manny. The Mariners' rebuilding effort will likely be spearheaded by a first-time GM, not an ideal scenario in the opinion of some baseball people. The Dodgers lost Shane Victorino twice in the Rule 5 draft. Tony...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Hudson, Cano, Mariners GM

Links for Wednesday... ESPN's Jayson Stark reminds us that Manny Ramirez could've been traded to the Phillies in July. But the Phils wouldn't offer Lou Marson, didn't like the idea of Manny in right field, and were concerned about Ramirez's hustle. Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog gives his early sense of the team's offseason approach. He doesn't seem them splurging on one of the big free agent names. MLB.com's Marty Noble heard Orlando Hudson "yearns to play for the Mets" (hat tip to MetsBlog). Jamey Newberg believes in the Rangers' plan. Joel Sherman of the New York Post doesn't believe Robinson...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Sabathia, McLouth, Fuentes

Here's a look at the latest column from Ken Rosenthal. Rosenthal puts odds for various teams to sign C.C. Sabathia, with the Yankees, Angels and Red Sox on top. Rosenthal wonders whether the White Sox will consider trading Jermaine Dye for a starting pitcher, moving Carlos Quentin to right field, and acquiring an athletic center fielder somehow. The goal would be a more athletic club. The Sox will also look to add a second baseman, moving Alexei Ramirez to shortstop. I'm not sure if something as long-term as Orlando Hudson makes sense, though. The Pirates wouldn't trade Nate McLouth for...   Continue Reading

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Holliday, Teixeira, Mussina

A look at what is being written around the Blogosphere... MetsBlog recognizes that Francisco Rodriguez will improve the team and appease fans, but is not sure he is worth a four or five-year deal. Mets Geek projects the Mets '09 roster and looks at some options from outside the organization with Pat Burrell and Derek Lowe being the biggest offseason targets. Was Watching says bringing back Brian Cashman was a mistake. River Ave. Blues assesses the Matt Holliday market and feels that Phil Hughes and Robinson Cano for Holliday "doesn't make much sense." Sox and Pinstripes provides an in-depth preview...   Continue Reading

Possible Cano Suitors

Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano's name comes up often in MLBTR chats and comment threads. Ken Rosenthal confirmed multiple clubs have expressed interest in Cano, and the Yankees will probably seek starting pitching in return (though a center fielder could also make sense). Cano won't necessarily be traded, but let's discuss some possible suitors. Orioles: If they move Brian Roberts, whether to the Yankees or another team. But the Orioles don't have starting pitching to trade for Cano. White Sox: Cano is signed through 2011, and top '08 draft pick Gordon Beckham should be ready before then (with Alexei Ramirez...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Vlad, Cano, Peavy, Hardy

Today we have a fresh column from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Vladimir Guerrero's $15MM option for '09 is a lock, but perhaps the Angels will reconsider extending him beyond that. Some of the money could be used to make Mark Teixeira the next franchise player. Rosenthal says "virtually every club with a need at the position" has shown interest in second baseman Robinson Cano. If you give Cano a mulligan for April, he hit .297/.326/.448 in 2008. That seems like a reasonable American League projection going forward. Cano, 26 in a few weeks, is signed through 2011 with two...   Continue Reading

Yankees Rumors: Jeter, Sabathia, Hudson

Let's talk Yankees. Ken Davidoff makes recommendations for the '09 Yankees. He would sign Derek Lowe and Andy Pettitte, and offer arbitration to Damaso Marte and Bobby Abreu. Jim Baumbach explains a tricky situation coming up: re-signing Derek Jeter. Peter Abraham takes a look at various free agents on the minds' of Yankees fans. Tyler Kepner of the New York Times says first priority for the Yankees is to re-sign Brian Cashman. I imagine they already have a Plan B in place, but recent reports lean toward Cashman returning. Kepner says the Indians were aggressive in pursuing a deadline deal...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Sabathia, Roberts, Cain

Here's a look at the latest column from SI.com's Jon Heyman. One "Yankees person" believes it will take "crazy money" to convince C.C. Sabathia to pitch in New York and in the American League. The following three names are being bandied about in the Yankees' clubhouse for center field next year: Nate McLouth, David DeJesus, and Matt Kemp. DeJesus seems the most reasonable target, though Robinson Cano could be part of a package for Kemp. DeJesus, it should be noted, played a poor center field this year according to the plus/minus system. Heyman doesn't see the Yankees re-signing Jason Giambi...   Continue Reading

Perrotto's Latest: GMs, Angels, Offseason Moves

John Perrotto at Baseball Prospectus has his Every Given Sunday column up, let's take a look at what he has to say: Perrotto believes that there's a good chance that the only GM change baseball will see this offseason may be the one we already know about, as Pat Gillick has already announced his retirement. Perrotto cites Assitant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. as a likely replacement. The most likely other change is in Seattle, and cites Dodgers' Assistant GM Kim Ng as a possible replacement, which would make her the first female general manager in the game's history. Perrotto believes...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Epstein, Cano, Hudson

Highlights from Jon Heyman's latest column at SI.com: Brewers owner Mark Attanasio reportedly made the decision to fire Ned Yost, but GM Doug Melvin's power is not diminished. Theo Epstein's new agreement is for three years. Heyman notes "talk lately that the Yankees might consider trading Robinson Cano." Apparently Cano still has good trade value and the Yankees could fill multiple needs in a deal. Heyman says the Dodgers are interested. Cano was subject of an odd Dodgers rumor back in July. The Yanks would be interested in Orlando Hudson if they were to trade Cano. Alex Rodriguez patched things...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Eaton, Tazawa, Royals, Jays

Today's links... SI.com's Tom Verducci ranks the five best midseason deals of the past 25 years. Peter Abraham thinks the Yankees should stick with Robinson Cano. Pat Gillick says there's a slight chance the Phils acquire a reliever this month. He was not able to acquire Kyle Farnsworth in August. MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan doesn't put much stock in the rumor that Nolan Ryan will clean house in Texas. Phillies GM Pat Gillick admitted signing Adam Eaton was a mistake. Many MLBTR readers thought so when the signing was finalized in November of '06. The Red Sox hope to sign a...   Continue Reading

Gammons' Latest: Martin, Dunn, Quentin

Here's the latest blog post from ESPN's Peter Gammons... Takashi Saito is mentioned as a free agent this winter, but I believe it's a situation where he can only re-sign, return to Japan, or retire. Gammons heard talk that Russell Martin could be switched permanently to third base. In that scenario, the Dodgers would sign a pitching-oriented catcher such as Jason Varitek. Would that be a good move? Adam Dunn knows it's cliche, but he intends to prioritize winning over money when he hits free agency. The D'Backs were asking a lot for Carlos Quentin last winter, with the White...   Continue Reading

Sherman's Latest: Yankees' Off-Season Plans

Earlier this week Hank Steinbrenner promised changes this off-season for the Yankees. Today Joel Sherman of the New York Post speculates on what those changes could look like... Sources tell Sherman that Steinbrenner wants to make CC Sabathia the highest paid pitcher ever. Sherman thinks Shane Victorino would be a nice fit for the Yankees in center field. Some Yankees officials are toying with the idea of trading some of their young pitching if the Yankees do land Sabathia and another veteran such as AJ Burnett. Sherman thinks a player like Phil Hughes could be used to land a young...   Continue Reading

Dodgers Interested In Cano?

FRIDAY: SI.com's Jon Heyman says this rumor was "shot down by those in the know." THURSDAY: George King of the New York Post has a zinger of a rumor this morning: Dodgers have an interest in Robinson Cano and might be willing to deal Derek Lowe and outfielder Matt Kemp, but the Yankees aren't inclined to part with the red-hot second baseman unless there is a front-of-the-rotation-type starter coming to The Bronx. Lowe, who has the stomach for big games and has AL East experience with the Red Sox, doesn't fit that bill. If Lowe isn't a frontline starter, he...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Crede, Marlins, CanĂ³, Bonds

Some interesting tidbits this afternoon before I check out: Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that one of Brian Sabean's top advisors, Ted Uhlaender, was present to witness Joe Crede's homer off of Arizona's Max Scherzer on Saturday. Seems more and more likely, as Crede proves his back is fine, that he will be moved to the Giants. Will the White Sox get Kevin Correia in exchange for Crede? The White Sox need a back-of-the-rotation guy, and Kenny Williams and company think they can win this year. So prospects probably won't get it done. While the Giants could...   Continue Reading

Kinsler Talking Long-Term Deal

2:17pm:The Rangers signed Kinsler for near the minimum for '08, which doesn't really affect the long-term discussions. 10:40am:According to Anthony Andro of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Rangers have made little progress on a long-term deal with second baseman Ian Kinsler. Jon Daniels was positive about it, however. Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News does see progress - he spoke to Kinsler and learned that talks for a five-year pact are ongoing. A sixth-year option could be included as well. Kinsler has two years of service time, so a five-year deal would buy out one year of free agency....   Continue Reading

Yanks Ink Cano Through Arb Years

UPDATE, 1-28-08 at 9:25pm: Peter Abraham has Cano's contract particulars. The deal could be worth $57MM over six years, at the high end. UPDATE, 1-25-08 at 5:06pm: Jon Heyman has the probable contract details. Cano gets $28MM over his arbitration years. He then has a 2012 option for $13MM and a 2013 option for $15MM. FROM 1-24-08 at 12:54pm: Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Yankees are close to a four-year deal with second baseman Robinson Cano. Since he's a Super Two, this will cover all of his arbitration years. Rosenthal also says that the deal will include a club..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Cano, Colon, Lowry

Here are some links I've rounded up this morning. In theory, Robinson Cano would be open to a long-term deal. River Ave. Blues recently took a look at how historically good Cano has been so far, and suggest the Yankees lowballed him with their arbitration submission. Baseball Prospectus' Derek Jacques saw Bartolo Colon pitch in the Dominican League Finals, and lends his evaluation. Colon was not impressive, but not terrible. It doesn't seem like he will get the two-year deal he wants. The Brewers will bring Abraham Nunez to camp. Versatile, but a drain on offense. Mark Gonzales of the..   Continue Reading

Mailbag: Lopez, Colon, Cano

Let's dig into the MLBTR mailbag once again. You could ask a question by emailing mlbtraderumors@gmail.com. What moves would you like to see the Rockies make to improve their starting rotation? - Sean The Rockies seem to have decent rotation depth - Aaron Cook, Jeff Francis, Jason Hirsh, Ubaldo Jimenez, Franklin Morales, Taylor Buchholz, even Kip Wells and Mark Redman. I would like to see Dan O'Dowd toss an injury-recovering free agent into the mix. The one I like is Rodrigo Lopez. He was quietly very solid for a half-season in Colorado this year. He had surgery to repair a..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Villarreal, Cano, Rowand

Alright let's round 'em up. This was one I was going to pass on posting, but it's pretty dead right now. The Astros signed newly acquired reliever Oscar Villarreal to a two-year deal. He was already under team control through 2008. The MLB.com article adds that Ed Wade's interest in Livan Hernandez and Bartolo Colon is low, and talks with Jon Lieber pretty much died. The Yankees pulled Robinson Cano out of Winter Ball. The word is that he doesn't want to aggravate a calf injury. You could read into it and speculate he's a part of trade talks. Seems..   Continue Reading

Red Sox Leading For Santana?

UPDATE, 11-29-07 at 10:30pm: The Yankees' offer stands at Ian Kennedy, Melky Cabrera, and maybe Jose Tabata. Phil Hughes is a big upgrade over Kennedy, and the Twins are insisting on him. Meanwhile the Red Sox are still pushing Coco Crisp while the Twins are holding out for Jacoby Ellsbury. If one of the teams cracks on Hughes or Ellsbury this thing might get done. UPDATE, 11-29-07 at 8pm: Despite what Jon Heyman said, the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo seems to think the Red Sox are still in the lead for Santana. It would be the package named below by..   Continue Reading

Yankees May Require Cano For Santana

How about Ken Davidoff this winter? The Newsday reporter has been digging up some great hot stove rumors so far. Today, he has some new info about Johan Santana. While Santana isn't up for bidding quite yet, he should be soon after the Twins make their token offer. The Yankees will certainly be in on him. Davidoff says a package of Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera, and a prospect wouldn't cut it, even though those players are very valuable. The Twins are one of few teams that actually feel good about their pitching, so the focus is on acquiring a star..   Continue Reading

Cashman Tells Cano The Score, Playfully

Robinson Cano said publicly a few days ago that he did not want to play third base. As I noted at the time, it's not really up to him. If he wants to get paid, he'll play where the Yankees want him to. Another thought is that taking Cano out of the 3B mix could hurt the Yankees' negotiating position slightly. Brian Cashman would rather have teams and agents think he's fully willing to move Cano to third or use Wilson Betemit. It does ring a bit hollow, kind of like when Cashman was saying they'd use Bubba Crosby as..   Continue Reading

Cano Not Interested In 3B

A few days ago, I wrote a post outlining the Yankees' options for third base, piggybacking on Peter Abraham's. One logical scenario he mentioned was to move Robinson Cano to third base and just acquire a second baseman (Orlando Hudson would've been nice). One problem with this option: Cano is not on board. He said yesterday that he did not want to move back to his old position. Of course, it's not his decision and if he wants to get paid he'll do what the Yankees tell him to do. We saw this situation play out most recently with Alfonso..   Continue Reading

Santana for Melky, Hughes, and Prospect?

Tim recently posted about the Yanks inquiries into the Twins organization for Johan Santana. Peter Abraham shares what he's heard of the rumors for the lefty ace. Melky Cabrera would give Minnesota a center fielder to replace Torii Hunter if he bolts. The Yankees could then offer the Twins Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy along with a second prospect. If Melky and Kennedy plus a prospect can land Santana, I can't see why the Yankees wouldn't do that, even if only for the opportunity to get a leg up on signing baseball's best pitcher to a long term deal. But..   Continue Reading

Cano Hands Over His Number

It's kind of cheesy, but I suppose worth a mention. The Yankees recently asked/told second baseman Robinson Cano to hand over his #22 in the event that Roger Clemens signs with them. Clemens's agent replied to the gesture by saying that Clemens will make a decision well after spring training at the earliest. I wonder if the Red Sox will respond by having Wily Mo Pena give up #22   Continue Reading
