Roy Halladay Rumors

Odds And Ends: Tazawa, Hoffman, Halladay

Links for Saturday... Junichi Tazawa is expected to announce early next week that he will sign with the Red Sox. He turned down offers from the Rangers, Mariners and Braves. The Padres recently offered to talk with Trevor Hoffman, but he hasn't responded. Tom Krasovic also has a Sandy Alderson quote that the Padres are "highly unlikely" to offer Hoffman arbitration. Robert MacLeod talked to Blue Jays insiders who believe trading ace Roy Halladay would send "the wrong signal" to fans since the Jays want to compete in 2009. Rob Neyer wonders how C.C. Sabathia's weight will affect his performance...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Halladay, Lopez, Glavine

Links for Monday... The Cardinals still don't have a deal with Trever Miller. Is a multiyear deal coming soon for Jamie Moyer? Ken Mandel's source says it's been delayed only because of scheduling conflicts. The D'Backs released infielder Jamie D'Antona, who is headed to Japan. J.P. Ricciardi says trading Roy Halladay hasn't even crossed his mind. Dan Graziano wrote last Wednesday that some continued to insist the Jays would explore trading their ace. River Ave. Blues considers Ben Sheets a better investment than A.J. Burnett for the Yankees. Jim Allen profiled the five Japanese players who plan to come over...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Furcal, Burnett, Halladay

Ken Rosenthal has a new column up this evening. The A's and Giants remain the top suitors for Rafael Furcal, and the team that's willing to give him four guaranteed years may win the bidding. The Dodgers, Braves, and Cubs are also in the mix. Rosenthal talked to a source with knowledge of the Blue Jays' thinking, and that person can't imagine them giving A.J. Burnett five years. Rosenthal says to forget the idea of a Roy Halladay trade, unless they attempt and fail to sign him to an extension. And if Burnett is signed, a Halladay extension would be...   Continue Reading

Graziano's Latest: Sabathia, Halladay

4:39pm: Tony Jackson of the L.A. Daily News shoots down all Dodgers rumors - no offer in the near future for Sabathia, no talks for Halladay, and no interest in Raul Ibanez. I think Graziano's Halladay musings have been distorted a bit - he basically said the Blue Jays might explore the trade market at some point. 3:31pm: Graziano adds in a new post that the Giants plan to make a six-year offer in excess of $100MM but under $140MM. Tom Haudricourt had info about a Giants bid several hours earlier as well. Haudricourt adds that the Angels will make...   Continue Reading

Breaking Down The Rangers Offseason

The Rangers figure to be very active this offseason. With the only pitching staff in baseball with a negative VORP (-46.7), that would likely be the area that sees the most change. We have already seen that Tom Hicks is not willing to throw free agency dollars at starting pitchers over 30. The Rangers have several good prospects that could be used as trade bait, including Engel Beltre and Elvis Andrus. And many feel that Jarrod Saltalamacchia will be moved this winter as the Rangers are deep at catcher. Jamey Newberg breaks down what the Rangers need to do this...   Continue Reading

Week In Review: 7/20 - 7/26

This one will be a bit lengthy, which can be expected as the deadline approaches. Here's a review of some of the major moves and rumors of the last week: The Yankees acquired Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte from the Pirates for OF Jose Tabata, RHP Ross Ohlendorf, RHP Dan McCutchen and RHP Jeff Karstens . I agree with Tim that Ian Kennedy would've been a better centerpiece, but Tabata is pretty highly-touted himself. Kennedy would have made a more immediate impact, while Tabata is only 19 years old. The Dodgers acquired Casey Blake for minor league RHP Jon Meloan...   Continue Reading

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Trade Deadline

Some random links as we head toward the trade deadline, from the Blogosphere... One writer at Bugs and Cranks thinks that the Rockies should not lower their demand for Brian Fuentes and feels that the Cardinals are the most likely team to land the closer. UmpBump wants the Rockies to keep Matt Holliday and would prefer moving Garrett Atkins, allowing Ian Stewart to play third. Meanwhile, another writer at Bugs and Cranks wants the Cardinals to pass on Matt Holliday and Jason Bay, but think St. Louis should go after George Sherrill and/or Fuentes. Outs Per Swing does not feel...   Continue Reading

Graziano's Latest: Sherrill, Arroyo, Rhodes, Zaun

Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger has a new Trade Winds column. Graziano notes how incredible the Erik Bedard trade could look for Baltimore if they spin George Sherrill for prospects. He names the Cardinals, Rays, Marlins, and Red Sox as suitors. The Mets fear Sherrill's price tag, while the Yankees don't expect a deal within the division. The Yankees haven't spoken to the Reds about Bronson Arroyo (although based on previous reports, they have scouted him). The Yanks aren't likely to sign Barry Bonds, and aren't terribly thrilled with the catching market. Fernando Martinez's possible injury could increase the...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Teixeira, Padilla, Sheffield, Beltre

ESPN's Jayson Stark has a new Rumblings and Grumblings up. You may want to grab a glass of water or something, because this is a beast of a column. If the Braves have a bad weekend and decide to trade Mark Teixeira, a deal could come together quickly. Stark says the Braves have already touched base with the Rays, Red Sox, Dodgers, Angels and Yankees. Where Tex fits on the Rays, I'm not sure. Additionally, interest in Will Ohman is said to be "massive." A Jorge Posada move to first base could affect the Yankees' interest in Teixeira this winter....   Continue Reading

Jays Quietly Discussing Halladay?

According to Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger: Roy Halladay is apparently unhappy in Toronto and has let management know it, and management has apparently responded by doing some quiet surveying of teams (such as St. Louis and the Dodgers) that are far, far away from the AL East in an effort to see what it could get for the 2003 Cy Young Award winner. Apparently, the returns other teams are getting for top-talent pitchers such as CC Sabathia, Rich Harden and Erik Bedard has inspired the Blue Jays to at least find out what it could get for one...   Continue Reading

Jays Intend To Keep Halladay

Jays fans needn't worry about losing ace Roy Halladay. Halladay himself said that. Team president Paul Godfrey considers Halladay his franchise player, and already has him under contract through 2010 at a below-market rate. According to Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail, the Jays are likely to talk about extending Halladay further in the offseason. The player is open to it, noting that he doesn't want talks to linger into the '09 season.   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Sexson, K-Rod, Halladay

Random links for the day... We'll have our weekly live chat here today at 2pm CST. R.J. Anderson of DRays Bay writes the Rays Comprehensive Trade Post. Brian Cashman confirmed interest in Richie Sexson. Danny Knobler quotes Francisco Rodriguez as saying that the Angels offered him three years, $34MM in November. Josh Hamilton called all his friends to tell them he was a Cub, then had to call them all back. People in Pedro Alvarez's neighorhood expect him to sign. Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay wants to see the team make some progress. Viva El Birdos would like to see...   Continue Reading
