John Lackey Rumors

C.C. Sabathia Rumors: Wednesday

6:19pm: It sounds like Sabathia's agent Greg Genske is shutting things down for the weekend. He didn't reveal anything new to Brewers GM Doug Melvin. Adam McCalvy also notes that the Brewers will offer Sabathia arbitration, a procedural move. 12:49pm: SI.com's Jon Heyman talked to Yankees people who believe the Angels leaked interest in Sabathia to reduce Tex's demands. Those people also believe the Halos will limit their offer to the $100-120MM range. Other factors: Tex makes more sense for the Angels, Arte Moreno loves him, and signing Sabathia could reduce the chances of extending John Lackey. Nonetheless, Heyman agrees...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Putz, Manny, Lackey, Ibanez

Let's take a look at the latest column from ESPN's Jayson Stark. Stark does the math and finds 15 potentially available closers versus six clubs in the market for one. Should result in a few bargains or teams holding on to their surpluses. The Mets don't seem willing to extend to four years for Francisco Rodriguez. Stark says J.J. Putz would become the Mets' top closer target if he's made available. MetsBlog's Matthew Cerrone wrote a few days ago that the Mets are likely to trade for a reliever with closing experience before attempting to sign one. J.P. Ricciardi quote:...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Myers, Crede, Giants

Links for Wednesday... The Brewers snagged infielder Casey McGehee off waivers from the Cubs. The Crew also designated Joe Dillon for assignment. The Reds signed 16 year-old lefty Ismael Guillon out of Venezuela. MLB.com's Marty Noble discusses the Mets and impending free agents Oliver Perez and Pedro Martinez. The Mets will entertain re-signing Perez at their price, but they'll let Pedro leave. Any guesses on where he pitches next year? Joe Pawlikowski at River Ave. Blues would like the Yankees to sign free agent outfielder Juan Rivera. Brian Cashman traded Rivera, Randy Choate, and Nick Johnson to the Expos for...   Continue Reading

Angels Exercise Guerrero, Lackey Options; Decline Anderson

According to a press release from the club, the Angels exercised their 2009 options on Vladimir Guerrero and John Lackey and declined their option on Garret Anderson. Nothing unexpected here. Guerrero will earn $15MM, while Lackey is also a bargain at $9MM. The Angels chose Anderson's $3MM buyout over his $14MM option, but they could still re-sign him.   Continue Reading

Angels Rumors: Teixeira, K-Rod, Uggla

The Angels were eliminated, so it's time to look forward to the offseason. Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times has the latest. Mark Teixeira said the right things again, about how his time with the Angels gives him something to think about as a free agent. Joel Sherman believes Tex is a great fit for the Yankees, even if he is the "ultimate Boras client." Sherman figures the Yanks, Red Sox, Orioles, and Angels will compete for Teixeira. Francisco Rodriguez's first choice is the Angels. Sherman believes the Angels' apparent willingness to let K-Rod go is a warning sign for...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Angels, D'Backs, Giambi, Ellis

Here is the latest from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Many important Angels will reach free agency this winter: Mark Teixeira, Francisco Rodriguez, Jon Garland, and Juan Rivera. Rosenthal doesn't expect any of these four back. Garret Anderson's $14MM option will not be exercised, but he could be re-signed. John Lackey and Vladimir Guerrero both have reasonable club options for '09, but the Halos need to plan beyond that. Several journalists have noted the D'Backs may restock the farm system if they let Adam Dunn, Orlando Hudson, Brandon Lyon, and Juan Cruz depart as free agents after the season. They're...   Continue Reading
