Giants Notes: Murphy Timeline, Snell Update

The Giants placed backup catcher Tom Murphy on the injured list due to a knee sprain over the weekend but didn’t provide a timetable for his return, as the veteran was headed for an MRI to determine the severity of the injury. Skipper Bob Melvin announced to the Giants beat today that imaging revealed a Grade 1 to 2 sprain.  Murphy won’t require surgery but is expected to be out of action for at least four to six weeks (X link via Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic).

The relatively lengthy absence for Murphy comes at a time when the Giants are also without starting catcher Patrick Bailey, who’s on the injured list due to ongoing concussion symptoms. San Francisco traded former No. 2 overall pick Joey Bart to the Pirates early this season because he was out of minor league options and the team didn’t want to carry three catchers in the long term. Since that swap, both catchers ahead of him on the depth chart have gone down with injuries. The result is a catching corps consisting of former Rule 5 pick Blake Sabol and recently promoted journeyman Jakson Reetz (who homered in his first game with the Giants yesterday).

Murphy, 33, has gotten out to a dismal .118/.211/.235 start after signing a two-year, $8.3MM deal over the winter. That’s come in a sample of just 38 plate appearances, however, far too small to glean meaningful conclusions. In 807 plate appearances with Seattle from 2019-23, Murphy batted .250/.324/.460 with 38 home runs. He was particularly dangerous against left-handed opponents, bashing them at a .287/.379/.539 clip.

With both Bailey and Murphy on the shelf and Bart now in Pittsburgh, the Giants’ catching depth has quickly dried up. Sabol is in line for the lion’s share of playing time, but he hit just .235/.301/.394 last season with a 34% strikeout rate. He was hitting .243/.378/.324 in Triple-A Sacramento this season, again showing worrying contact issues (30.8% strikeout rate). Reetz appeared in 15 games with Sacramento prior to his call-up and batted .217/.357/.435 in 57 plate appearances. Yesterday’s home run came in his first big league at-bat since 2021 — just the third MLB plate appearance of his career. Reetz is a career .234/.328/.478 hitter in parts of four Triple-A seasons.

It’s not a great update for the Giants, but Murphy avoided a worst-case scenario that’d have sidelined him for a much longer period. The Giants also provided a small update on reigning Cy Young winner Blake Snell on Monday, with Melvin telling the team’s beat that the lefty pitched a bullpen session without issue and is slated to pitch three innings in a simulated game against live hitters tomorrow (X link via Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle). Snell, who was rocked for an 11.57 ERA through his first three starts, hit the 15-day IL due to an adductor strain last week.

Giants Designate Daulton Jefferies For Assignment

The Giants announced Monday that they’ve designated right-hander Daulton Jefferies for assignment. His spot on the 40-man roster will go to right-handed pitching prospect Mason Black, whose previously reported promotion from Triple-A Sacramento is now official.

Jefferies, 28, went through two years of painstaking rehab to get back to the big leagues after undergoing both Tommy John surgery and thoracic outlet surgery. The former No. 37 overall draft pick’s Giants debut at the end of March was his first MLB appearance since May 2022 with the A’s.

Jefferies shined in spring training this year (2.57 ERA, 16-to-3 K/BB ratio in 14 innings) and has pitched quite well in four Triple-A appearances this season. In 18 1/3 frames with Sacramento, he’s notched a tidy 3.44 ERA while fanning 22.7% of his opponents against a sharp 6.7% walk rate.

However, in a pair of big league appearances, he’s lasted just 4 2/3 innings overall and been tagged for 13 runs (nine earned) on the strength of 14 hits (two homers) and a pair of walks. Jefferies has only fanned four of the 31 men he’s faced. He’s seen more than half the balls in play against him land for hits, which certainly hasn’t helped his cause, but he’s also paid the price for plenty of mistakes over the plate; in addition to the pair of homers, he’s surrendered six doubles and a triple.

Jefferies has had a fair bit of minor league success, but he’s yet to carry it over to the big leagues in a quartet of seasons where he’s seen mostly fleeting action. In 61 MLB frames, he carries an unsightly 6.64 earned run average, although his overall mark in six minor league seasons is nearly half that number, sitting at 3.88. Injuries have played no small part in his struggles; the previously mentioned Tommy John surgery in 2022 was actually the second of his career, and he battled nerve issues in his elbow for nearly a year before finally being diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome and undergoing that surgery.

The Giants will have a week to trade Jefferies, attempt to pass him through outright waivers, or release him. He’s in his final minor league option season, so any team that acquires him would be able to send him to Triple-A without needing to expose him to waivers. Jefferies has been outrighted once in the past, so even if he goes unclaimed on waivers, that prior outright assignment grants him the right to reject another outright assignment in favor of free agency.

Giants To Promote Mason Black

The Giants will start Mason Black against the Phillies on Monday, manager Bob Melvin told reporters (including Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle) during today’s pregame media session.  It will mark Black’s Major League debut, and the Giants will have to make space for the right-hander on both the 26-man and 40-man rosters.

MLB Pipeline rates Black as the seventh-best prospect in the San Francisco farm system, while Baseball America puts the him in the eighth spot.  Black’s slider and sinking fastball each earned 60 grades on BA’s scouting report and 55s from Pipeline, though the problem is that these two plus pitches account for virtually all of Black’s arsenal, as his changeup is only okay and he has only lightly experimented with other offerings.  Baseball America thinks Black could eventually end up as a reliever due to his limited array of pitches, and since Pipeline notes that Black’s velocity has hit the 100mph mark (up from his usual 92-94mph range) “in shorter stints,” there is some intrigue in a move to the pen down the road.

For now, however, there’s plenty of potential in Black as a starting pitcher.  A third-round pick for the Giants in the 2021 draft, Black has a 3.22 ERA over 262 1/3 career minor league innings.  This includes an eye-opening 1.01 ERA in six starts and 26 2/3 innings at Triple-A Sacramento this season, as Black has a 29% strikeout rate and eight percent walk rate to add to his impressive numbers.

While a 4.01 xFIP and a .246 BABIP indicate that Black isn’t as entirely dominant as his ERA seems, the performance still stands out in the batter-friendly environs of the Pacific Coast League.  BA’s scouting report suggests that Black’s tendency to pitch on the fringes of the strike zone might play better in the majors than in the minors, as human umpires could be more forgiving than the automated ball-strike system.

Since Blake Snell went on the injured list on April 24, San Francisco has used bullpen games to cover Snell’s two scheduled turns in the rotation.  Black hasn’t thrown more than 71 pitches in a game this season and could be on something of a short leash, as Daulton Jefferies (called up to the roster today) might act behind Black in a piggyback capacity.  However, given Black’s status as a prospect of note, the Giants are likely to give him a longer look if he pitches well.  The Phillies are a very tough draw for a pitcher’s first Major League game, yet there is some symbolism at play, as Black was born in Scranton and grew up a Phillies fan.

With Snell, Robbie Ray, Alex Cobb, and Tristan Beck all on the IL, San Francisco has gotten good results from rookies Kyle Harrison and Keaton Winn, Jordan Hicks has looked very sharp as a starter, and ace Logan Webb has been his typical solid self.  There’s some room for Black to bank some starts as a regular fifth starter, and he should get two outings since the Giants don’t have another off-day until May 16.

Giants Select Jakson Reetz, Designate Mitch White For Assignment

The Giants announced a set of roster moves this afternoon including selecting the contract of catcher Jakson Reetz ahead of tonight’s game against the Phillies to take the place of veteran catcher Tom Murphy, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left knee sprain. Right-hander Mitch White was designated for assignment to make room for Reetz on the 40-man roster, while righty Daulton Jefferies was recalled to replace White on the active roster. Robert Murray of FanSided first reported Reetz’s selection to the majors, while Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area first suggested that Reetz would be the next man up in the event of an additional roster move.

Reetz, 28, was a third-round pick by the Nationals in the 2014 draft but didn’t make his MLB debut until 2021, when he appeared in two games with the club while filling in for injured veteran Yan Gomes alongside Tres Barrera. He received just two plate appearances at the big league level, going one-for-two with a double before being sent back to the minor leagues. Reetz has not appeared in the majors since then, instead bouncing between the Nationals, Royals, Brewers, and Giants minor league systems.

Despite his lack of MLB opportunities in recent years, Reetz has generally hit quite well at the Triple-A level, particularly for a catcher. He owns a career slash line of .234/.328/.478 in 577 trips to the plate at the level and enjoyed a particularly strong season with the Giants last year, for whom he slashed .243/.342/.500 in 82 games behind the dish.

While Reetz’s strong defensive reputation behind the plate and solid offensive numbers likely would have earned him a look by now in another organization, San Francisco is deep enough behind the plate to have parted ways with former top prospect Joey Bart earlier this season due to a roster crunch. However, with Patrick Bailey on the injured list due to a concussion and Murphy now out with an injury of his own, the Giants are now left to rely on 2023 Rule 5 Draft pick Blake Sabol and Reetz behind the plate for the time being.

As for Murphy, the veteran backstop told reporters (including The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly) following yesterday’s game that he had “felt a pop” while blocking the ball and was slated to undergo an MRI today. No timetable has been made available for the 33-year-old’s return to action, though even a short absence is a blow the San Francisco given the club’s quickly evaporating depth behind the plate. Murphy signed with the club this past offseason on a two-year, $8.25MM deal to serve as Bailey’s backup but has struggled in the early going this season, slashing just .118/.211/.235 in 13 games. Hopefully, the time on the shelf will offer Murphy a chance to reset ahead of returning to the Giants later on in the season.

As for White, his brief tenure with his hometown team may be coming to an end as the club will have seven days to either trade the right-hander or attempt to pass him through waivers. Should White successfully clear waivers, the Giants would have the opportunity to outright the righty to the minor leagues. The 29-year-old righty once received top-100 prospect buzz as a member of the Dodgers and posted a strong 3.58 ERA in 105 2/3 innings with the club across parts of three seasons but has struggled badly since being traded to the Blue Jays prior to the 2022 trade deadline.

White posted a 7.65 ERA in 24 appearances with the Blue Jays before the club ultimately designated him for assignment earlier this year, at which point he was swapped to the Giants in a cash deal. White’s return to the NL West hasn’t gone well as he’s been lit up for seven runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out just one in 5 1/3 innings of work. Taking his place on the roster will be Jefferies, who allowed 13 runs (nine earned) in 4 2/3 innings with the Giants earlier this season but has settled in at the Triple-A level with a solid 3.44 ERA in 18 1/3 frames since then.

Giants Place Patrick Bailey On 7-Day Concussion IL

The Giants placed catcher Patrick Bailey on the seven-day injured list for concussion-related symptoms.  Blake Sabol was called up from Triple-A to take Bailey’s spot on the active roster.

Alec Bohm fouled a ball off Bailey’s mask in the first inning of San Francisco’s 4-3 loss to the Phillies yesterday.  (In a costly game for both teams, Trea Turner also suffered a hamstring strain that has resulted in an IL trip.)  Bailey tried to stay in the game but in the next inning, he left the field and was replaced by Tom Murphy behind the plate.  The Giants didn’t immediately place Bailey in concussion protocol, but the catcher did receive treatment and was announced as suffering from blurred vision.

The specialized seven-day version of the IL allows players and teams a little extra flexibility when dealing with potential concussions.  If a player passes tests, he only has to miss seven days instead of the standard 10 days, and a team is likewise not left short-handed on its roster if a player is going day-to-day while dealing with any lingering symptoms.  It also removes any inclination for the player to try and play through the symptoms, which carries increased danger given the nature of head-related injury.

In the best-case scenario, Bailey would be back in the Giants’ lineup in seven days’ time, though the team might be a little more careful with its franchise catcher given his past concussion history.  As MLB.com’s Maria Guardado notes, Bailey has been playing wearing a Q-collar device for extra safety since he went on the seven-day IL last September, though he was able to return from that stint in a minimal amount of time.

After making his MLB debut last season, Bailey’s excellent defense established him as San Francisco’s catcher of the future, and he has taken some big steps forward at the plate in 2024.  Bailey had a modest .233/.285/.359 slash line and seven homers over 353 plate appearances in 2023, but he has hit .278/.344/.456 with three home runs in his first 91 PA this season.  With the Statcast numbers largely backing up this breakout, Bailey’s absence is an even bigger blow to a Giants lineup that is lacking in consistent production.

The combination of Murphy and Sabol will hold the fort at catcher until Bailey is back.  Murphy has posted some very good numbers in limited or part-time duty with the Mariners but his bat has been cold so far in 2024, while Sabol is now set to receive his first MLB playing time of 2024.  Sabol was a Rule 5 pick in 2022, and he spent the entire 2023 season on San Francisco’s roster playing as a part-time catcher and left fielder.  Sabol hit .235/.301/.394 with 13 home runs in 344 PA during his rookie season.

Giants Recall Randy Rodriguez For MLB Debut

The Giants announced Thursday that right-handed reliever Randy Rodriguez has been recalled from Triple-A Sacramento. Fellow righty Daulton Jefferies was optioned to Sacramento in his place. It’ll be Rodriguez’s MLB debut if he gets into a game.

Rodriguez, 24, is out to a terrific start in Sacramento, tossing 10 2/3 innings and yielding only a pair of runs on seven hits and four walks with 10 strikeouts. He entered the 2024 season ranked 11th among Giants prospects at FanGraphs and 28th at MLB.com. Both outlets praise him as a potential big league reliever, with FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen and Travis Ice being a bit more bullish on Rodriguez’s athleticism improving his chances of eventually improving currently shaky command.

Rodriguez misses plenty of bats with an upper-90s heater and hard slider, but he also walked 14% of his Double-A opponents last year and turned in a mammoth 20.7% walk rate in a sample of 37 2/3 innings following a move to Triple-A. He’s more than halved that walk rate in his first 10 appearances of the ’24 season (9.5%). That’s an encouraging trend, particularly since Rodriguez’s window to hone his command and cement himself as a big leaguer is dwindling — despite only just being called up for his debut. The Giants selected him to the 40-man roster following the 2021 season, meaning Rodriguez is already in the last of three minor league option years. He’ll be out of options in 2025.

Overall, Rodriguez has a 3.75 ERA in 261 2/3 minor league innings, but nearly all of his success has come at the Low-A, High-A and Double-A levels. This early stretch in 2024 is his first run of success in Triple-A. He’ll give the Giants a fresh arm following a bullpen game that saw them use five different pitchers to get through eight innings in a road loss to the Red Sox.

Alex Cobb Receives Cortisone Shot In Shoulder

  • The Giants recently transferred veteran hurler Alex Cobb to the 60-day injured list in the wake of the right-hander being slowed in his return from offseason hip surgery by a bout of shoulder inflammation. Per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Cobb received a cortisone shot in his shoulder on Friday and a subsequent MRI on his shoulder showed enough improvement that the club is hopeful his discomfort will fade in the coming days. Presumably, Cobb will resume throwing once the discomfort subsides. The righty will first be eligible to return from the injured list on May 27, and manager Bob Melvin indicated last week that the a minimum stay on the shelf was a “realistic” timeline for the veteran. Cobb, 36, has pitched to a 3.80 ERA with a 3.41 FIP across 56 starts with the Giants the past two seasons.

Giants Place Blake Snell On Injured List Due To Adductor Strain

The Giants scratched Blake Snell from his scheduled start today and will place the reigning NL Cy Young winner on the 15-day injured list with a left adductor strain, retroactive to April 23, per a team announcement. Reliever Landen Roupp is up from Triple-A Sacramento to take his spot on the active roster. Right-hander Ryan Walker will open a bullpen game for the Giants in his place.

The news is the latest bump in what has been an incredibly frustrating year for Snell so far. He lingered in free agency for an extended period of time, not finding the mega deal that he was surely looking for. Instead, he pivoted towards a short-term deal and got one from the Giants, but that pact wasn’t agreed to until March 18.

He wasn’t able to get into any official Spring Training games, instead pitching in some simulated games before quickly making his debut for the Giants on April 8. But he has shown some clear signs of rust so far, with his first three starts resulting in 11 2/3 innings pitched with 15 earned runs allowed. He has only struck out 20.7% of the batters he has faced so far this year, well south of the 31.5% rate he had last year and his career rate of 29.6%.

Snell was being victimized by a .410 batting average on balls in play and 39.6% strand rate that were both unsustainably lucky. His 4.62 FIP and 3.95 SIERA both suggest he was due for a correction just based on normalized luck going forward. It also would have been fair to expect him to just get better results as he got further removed from his truncated Spring Training and into midseason form.

Unfortunately, all of that will now be put on hold for a while. The club hasn’t yet provided a timeline of how long they expect Snell to be out of action but the IL placement suggests they expect him to miss at least a couple of turns through the rotation.

Snell now joins Robbie Ray, Alex Cobb and Tristan Beck in the group of Giant starters on the injured list. Cobb and Ray each underwent surgery last year and are still working towards getting back on the mound. Beck underwent vascular surgery in March to address an aneurysm in his upper right arm and has been on the injured list all year as well.

With Snell now joining them, the rotation is left with Logan Webb, Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks and Keaton Winn. It seems they are planning a bullpen game today and may be able to wait before deciding on a fifth starter. They have an off-day tomorrow and then another on Monday, meaning they could potentially get by with a four-man rotation until next weekend.

Roupp has starting experience in the minors and could be an option. Mitch White was just acquired from the Blue Jays recently and he would be another option. Sean Hjelle was just activated from the injured list a few days ago but has started in the past. Kai-Wei Teng and Daulton Jefferies are on the 40-man roster and currently on optional assignment. One of the club’s top prospects is Carson Whisenhunt, who is throwing in Triple-A. However, he has an 8.79 ERA on the year and isn’t yet on the 40-man.

For Snell, the length of his absence and how it impacts the rest of his season could perhaps influence his opt-out decision. The deal he signed with the Giants comes with a $62MM guarantee, though with some money deferred. He gets $32MM for the 2024 season, in the form of a $15MM salary and $17MM signing bonus that isn’t paid out until January 2026, regardless of whether he opts out or not. If he decides to stay for 2025, he’ll get $30MM, with half of that money deferred until 2027.

Snell won the National League Cy Young last year when he posted a 2.25 ERA for the Padres and it would have been an easy decision for him to opt out if he performed anywhere close to that level again this year. But now that he’s off to a slow start and is set to miss some time, the decision becomes more murky and his future health and performance will be in the spotlight in the months to come.

Melvin: Alex Cobb Could Return From 60-Day IL Once Eligible

  • The Giants placed right-hander Alex Cobb on the 60-day IL yesterday after the right-hander suffered a setback in his rehab from hip surgery earlier this week. While that news initially appeared to be somewhat ominous, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area relays this afternoon that manager Bob Melvin told reporters that it’s “realistic” that Cobb could be activated as soon as he’s first eligible to return on May 27. That’s great news for San Francisco, as the club has leaned on Cobb more than any pitcher besides Logan Webb since he joined the club on a two-year deal prior to the 2022 season. In that time, he’s made 56 starts for the Giants while pitching to a 3.80 ERA with an even stronger 3.41 FIP. Young righty Keaton Winn has filled out the club’s rotation alongside Webb, Blake Snell, Kyle Harrison, and Jordan Hicks while Cobb has been out of commission.
