Brian Cashman Rumors

Some more links on a busy Saturday evening... Yankees GM Brian Cashman believes the trade deadline is "no longer even in existence" because teams can always use waivers to swap players in August: "Guys are going to get through because people are going to be afraid to claim and get stuck with money that they can’t afford," said the GM. "And so the July 31 trade deadline is more of a fictitious one now, anyway." According to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon, Reds manager Dusty Baker had a meeting with his players this week to discuss the looming trade deadline. "Dusty said......

A fresh batch of links for your Saturday afternoon enjoyment... Sweeny Murti of WFAN gathered a quote from Yankees GM Brian Cashman on the club's starting pitching depth: "Right now I don't feel like we need a guy...because we're going internal and waiting to see how that works out." In other words, they probably won't take part in the Roy Halladay or Cliff Lee sweepstakes. Tracy Ringolsby, writing for FOXSports.com, notes how a change of scenery has benefited 30-year-old right-hander Jason Marquis, who was named to his first All-Star team earlier this month. Talking to Newsday's Arthur Staple, Yankees GM Brian Cashman discussed the team's approach toward the trade market. Cashman said that if the team fixes itself by getting Brian Bruney healthy and Chien-Ming Wang right, there may not be a need to make a deal. Bruney returns from the DL Tuesday, while Wang's last-chance start comes Wednesday against John Lannan and the Nationals. Seems odd to me to place so much emphasis on a single start. Staple also learned that Cashman intends to talk to Hal Steinbrenner if he seeks approval to add to the payroll. I'd be surprised to see...

Kat O'Brien of Newsday writes today about the Yankees' pursuit of Mark Teixeira. In talking to Brian Cashman, O'Brien learned that the GM's persistence finally led to the go-ahead from Hal Steinbrenner; for much of the offseason, Tex wasn't an option. At the time of Cashman's December meeting with Teixeira and Scott Boras, the Yankees were not expecting to sign the slugger. According to Cashman: "When I met with him, I was doing it more to get leverage on CC. We weren't playing possum on purpose. We were actually out of it." Cashman was able to convince Hal with this...

According to Tyler Kepner of the New York Times, Yankees GM Brian Cashman was in Washington yesterday to meet with free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira. The meeting came at Scott Boras' request, and Boras was present. Previous talk of Cashman and Boras meeting in California was incorrect, according to George King of the New York Post. King says Cashman and Boras also discussed Manny Ramirez, Derek Lowe, and Oliver Perez. Mark Feinsand says Lowe was the focus of this meeting. Cashman intends to meet with C.C. Sabathia soon, Joel Sherman attempts to understand why.

A look at what is being written around the Blogosphere... MetsBlog recognizes that Francisco Rodriguez will improve the team and appease fans, but is not sure he is worth a four or five-year deal. A few hot stove notes from ESPN's Buster Olney... Olney heard the Yankees' 2009 payroll will be in the $180MM range, down $29MM or so from this year. The Yankees didn't need to negotiate dollars with Brian Cashman...it was just a matter of whether he wanted to come back. Olney can see Jason Giambi returning to the A's "if the money can be worked out." Does two years, $20MM sound right? A Giambi signing would either push Daric Barton to the bench or Jack Cust to left field.

Peter Abraham has interesting quotes from Yankees GM Brian Cashman: The Yankees are trying to improve their process for scouting Japan. Thinking back to Kei Igawa in '06...that seemed like a direct response to the Red Sox getting Daisuke Matsuzaka. Cashman thinks Mike Mussina is leaning toward retirement. That would complicate Cashman's situation. It seems that Hal Steinbrenner has gotten Hank under control, which would make Cashman's job easier. There will be no advisory board, by the way. Joel Sherman says Cashman is now fighting for his reputation. Cashman cautioned fans against getting too attached to any one free agent....
