Jimmy Rollins Rumors

Possible Destinations For Omar Vizquel, Nick Johnson

You could hardly think of two more dissimilar players than Omar Vizquel and Nick Johnson, but Evan Brunell of The Hardball Times took a look at where these two free agents may end up playing in 2010. First, Vizquel. Brunell thinks that Vizquel's desire to play for a higher-profile club than Texas may stem from the fact that playing for a big-market team may improve Vizquel's chances of being voted into the Hall of Fame when his career is over. There's also the fact that the 42-year-old shortstop would no doubt love to get another chance at a World Series...   Continue Reading

Phillies Seeking Utility Infielder

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel wants an upgrade at the utility infield position, writes Andy Martino of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Second baseman Chase Utley tends to run out of gas late in the season and a quality backup would go a long way towards solving that problem. Utley's late-season performance took a dive once again this year as fatigue caught up with him. The 30-year-old hit .304/.423/.554 from the start of the year to the end of August. From September 1st to the end of the regular season, Utley saw his slash line dip to a putrid .193/.290/.325. An improvement over...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Garcia, Astros, Reds

More links for the afternoon... Danny Knobler of CBS Sports looks at some candidates for waiver trades. Could Freddy Garcia help a National League team? Jim Callis of Baseball America ranks the 15 biggest bonuses MLB draft picks have ever received. Stephen Strasburg tops them all, of course. MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports that the Rangers will send Jose Vallejo to the Astros along with Matt Nevarez as part of the Ivan Rodriguez trade, as expected. The Astros receive a third player if the Rangers make the playoffs. Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News says the Reds have veered away...   Continue Reading

Don't Expect Phillies to Pick Up a Bat

There are two factors working against the Philadelphia Phillies picking up a bat, even with Raul Ibanez sidelined with a groin injury, Jimmy Rollins languishing in the low .200s, and a three-game sweep by the Blue Jays now complete. First is that the Phils may have that replacement bat during Ibanez's recovery in John Mayberry Jr., who homered Thursday afternoon. Mayberry posted an .808 OPS during 210 Triple-A plate appearances in 2009, suggesting he can be an adequate bat in Ibanez's absence. But the bigger issue is the Phillies will need to save their prospects for a deal or deals...   Continue Reading

Phils Won't Listen On Rollins

On Thursday, Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News spoke of "rumors that Philadelphia will listen to offers" for Jimmy Rollins. Todd Zolecki of the Philadelphia Inquirer ran this one by Phils GM Ruben Amaro Jr. Amaro called the rumor "ludicrous" and "unequivocally false." So, cross Rollins off your wishlist.   Continue Reading

Phillies Rumors: Baldelli, Hairston, Mench

5:44pm: MLB.com's Ken Mandel says the Phillies have Rocco Baldelli, Jerry Hairston Jr., and Kevin Mench on the radar in the event they don't re-sign Burrell. The Phillies have long liked Baldelli, though the Rays hope to talk contract soon. Reds GM Walt Jocketty recently met with Hairston's agent, and feels he made progress. And the Hanshin Tigers hope to lure Mench to Japan. 9:38am: Checkin' in on the Phillies... GM Ruben Amaro Jr. had an informal five-minute talk with Casey Close, who represents Ryan Howard and Joe Blanton. Talks have not yet begun with free agents Pat Burrell, Jamie...   Continue Reading

Giants Rumors: Burrell, Rollins, Rowand

THURSDAY: More Giants info, courtesy of John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. GM Brian Sabean is looking for offense in the infield, but he considers Cain untouchable. Jonathan Sanchez or various pitching prospects could be trade bait instead. Sabean also met with the agents for various free agent hitters and relievers, including Orlando Hudson and Bob Howry. WEDNESDAY: Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News has some interesting rumors this evening. Baggarly believes the rumor of the Giants' interest in Rafael Furcal makes sense, as it'd solidify their middle infield situation. He doesn't see the Giants signing Pat...   Continue Reading
