Adrian Beltre Rumors

Stark's Latest: Abreu, Arroyo, Hudson

ESPN's Jayson Stark is back with a look at needs and plans for all 30 teams. I highly recommend you read the article, but here are a few highlights. He's also got a fresh blog post here. The Phillies are eyeing Doug Brocail and Russ Springer. The Mets like Bobby Abreu, but not his three year, $45MM asking price. The Reds are quietly listening on Bronson Arroyo, and the Rangers may be interested. Contrary to previous reports, Stark believes the Mets' first order of business is getting a starting pitcher. Here's a new one - the Marlins are interested in...   Continue Reading

Mariners Rumors: Ibanez, Beltre, Ichiro

More fine work from Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times as he takes a look at the future of the Mariners. A few notes: Raul Ibanez names winning as his top priority, like most players. He'll still entertain a possible return to Seattle, but it seems likely a more competitive team will make a solid offer. Adrian Beltre doesn't like the idea of playing for a rebuilding club in '09, but he's under contract with the Ms at a reasonable $12MM. Does it make sense to trade him and let Ibanez walk, opting for a full-out rebuild? Or do the...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Lee, Rogers, Beltre, Darvish

Today's random linkage... The Indians signed 21 year-old pitcher Chen-Chang Lee out of Taiwan. Anthony Castrovince has the scouting report. East Windup Chronicle says the bonus is in the $350-400K range. Kenny Rogers suggested Jim Leyland remove him from the rotation. Rogers still thinks he can pitch effectively next year at 44, however. Geoff Baker notes an extra benefit to delaying Adrian Beltre's surgery - the playing time could nudge him toward Type A status when he reaches free agency after the '09 season. Ken Davidoff of Newsday says Yu Darvish will probably not be posted this winter but could...   Continue Reading

Would Dodgers Trade For Beltre?

If Casey Blake returns to Cleveland, would the Dodgers be interested in Adrian Beltre? Bill Shaikin of the LA Times points out Beltre still calls Pasadena home. The 29 year old third basemen is in the midst of this third consecutive 25 homerun season despite a torn ligament in his left thumb. Writes Shaikin: "Beltre wouldn't mind staying in Seattle, but the Mariners need to hire a general manager and get on with rebuilding. Assuming they do, Beltre would love to come back to the Dodgers. 'If I'm available, I'd be happy to,' he said. 'I don't know what is...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Bass, Astros, Beltre, Marlins

A roundup of links for your afternoon reading: Tadahito Iguchi, recently released by the Padres, has returned to the Phillies. The Brewers have signed Mike Lamb, who had been DFA by the Twins. Richard Justice praises Ed Wade's bullpen construction. El Lefty Malo discusses the Giants' reported interest in Adrian Beltre. He doesn't think a straight-up trade for Jonathan Sanchez makes sense for the Giants. Tons of arbitration eligible players for the Marlins this off-season. Will they start selling off parts? It seems likely. To sign everyone would bring their payroll over $30MM. Tough to sustain when you're drawing just...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Cain, Beltre, Burrell, Wigginton

Let's take a look at the latest column from ESPN's Jayson Stark. Stark wonders why no one has questioned MLB's apparent trade deadline extension for the Manny Ramirez deal. Currently the idea of the Brewers swapping Prince Fielder for Matt Cain is just fun speculation. However, it is true the Brewers will listen on Fielder (he is about to get expensive). The Giants are known to like the big first baseman. The hangup is Brian Sabean's reported unwillingness to trade Tim Lincecum or Cain. The Giants also have their eye on Adrian Beltre. The Mariners want starting pitching, but one...   Continue Reading

Cafardo's Latest: Ausmus, Towles, Mariners, Giants, Sheffield, Salty

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe has a few items in his Sunday column... Cafardo says that the Red Sox, despite being in the market for a catcher, are not interested in Brad Ausmus. They did inquire with the Astros about J.R. Towles, who is currently in Triple A, but were told he is unavailable. One executive told Cafardo that the Mariners continue to demand other teams take entire contracts and give up prospects for players like Raul Ibanez, Jarrod Washburn and Adrian Beltre. In the cases of Ibanez and Beltre, that position is defensible. Cafardo interviewed Brian Sabean about...   Continue Reading

Twins Rumors: Bonser, Beltre, Roberts, Monroe

La Velle E. Neal III and Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune have the latest Twins buzz. The Twins would like to trade Boof Bonser to make room for Francisco Liriano. The Giants and Rangers might be interested. Targets for the Twins: relief help, third base, and second base. Talks for Adrian Beltre are not dead. The Mariners are eyeing Nick Blackburn, Scott Baker, Kevin Slowey, Glen Perkins, and Denard Span. The Twins aren't biting. Sounds like the Mariners want a premium arm for Beltre from the Twins or Giants, but those teams see it as more of a salary...   Continue Reading

Giants Like Adrian Beltre

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle: The Giants like Adrian Beltre, believing he would thrive in the more fastball-oriented National League, but a source said they have not exchanged names with the Mariners. Schulman explains that Giants GM Brian Sabean is open to acquiring players who can help in 2009. Hank Blalock was also on the radar, but now he's back on the DL. The Rangers told a white lie to the public regarding Blalock's injury earlier this week. The Rangers had their eye on Jonathan Sanchez, but I doubt the Giants would've entertained a one-for-one swap...   Continue Reading

Knobler's Latest: Pirates, Brewers, Beltre, Cabrera

Here's the latest from CBSSports.com's Danny Knobler. A rumor made the rounds that Pirates president Frank Coonelly and GM Neal Huntington were at odds over the team's strategy, with Coonelly pushing .500 as a goal. Huntington denied that, and has five coveted players to work with in the next week. Keep in mind that only Damaso Marte is a free agent after the season, so moves can be made in the offseason. Teams with available relievers believes the Brewers are still in the market, despite Doug Melvin's claims. Many teams are scouting the Brewers' Double A club. Adrian Beltre's contract...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Teixeira, Padilla, Sheffield, Beltre

ESPN's Jayson Stark has a new Rumblings and Grumblings up. You may want to grab a glass of water or something, because this is a beast of a column. If the Braves have a bad weekend and decide to trade Mark Teixeira, a deal could come together quickly. Stark says the Braves have already touched base with the Rays, Red Sox, Dodgers, Angels and Yankees. Where Tex fits on the Rays, I'm not sure. Additionally, interest in Will Ohman is said to be "massive." A Jorge Posada move to first base could affect the Yankees' interest in Teixeira this winter....   Continue Reading

Week in Review

Another week in the history books! Here's a look back from July 13-19: The Phillies acquired Joe Blanton from the A's for a package of three minor leaguers: Adrian Cardenas, Josh Outman, and Matthew Spencer. Cardenas and Outman were the Phils' #2 and #4 prospects. Personally, that seems like a lot to bring a pitcher who's already struggling to a much smaller park. Blanton is a much better pitcher than he's showed this season, however. Francisco Rodriguez will test the free-agent market this offseason. I don't think anyone would be surprised to see K-Rod sign a record-setting contract for a...   Continue Reading

Dodgers Sign Ozuna, Look To Stay Active

Ken Gurnick from MLB.com writes that the Dodgers signed veteran utility player Pablo Ozuna today. The White Sox designated Ozuna for assignment on July 8 to make room for Paul Konerko when he returned from the DL. He elected to become a free agent after clearing waivers. Ozuna had posted a mediocre line of .281/.313/.328 in 69 plate appearances for the White Sox this year. Luis Maza was designated for assignment to make room for Ozuna, Gurnick writes. Maza was called up as a quick shortstop fix earlier in the year, but had posted an abysmal .228/.278/.282 line through 79...   Continue Reading

Twins Out Of Running For Beltre

La Velle E. Neal III of Twins Insider is reporting that the Twins are bowing out of the Adrian Beltre sweepstakes. The price for Beltre, rumored to be similar to what the Phillies gave up for Joe Blanton, was just too high. Neal says: In the Twins’ case, it could mean one of their four young starters plus a couple prospects. Beltre is scheduled to make $12 million next season and any team that trades for the third baseman would have to pay that. Just how much is Beltre worth? USS Mariner tackled that question in depth last September. Their...   Continue Reading

Mariners Rumors: Rhodes, Bedard, Washburn

Mariners beat writer Geoff Baker has a new blog post up this morning about the team's trade candidates. In a well thought-out piece, Baker names Arthur Rhodes, Erik Bedard, Jarrod Washburn, Raul Ibanez, and Adrian Beltre as the most likely to go (in that order). A few highlights from the post: Solid lefty relievers are available - mainly Brian Fuentes and Damaso Marte. But the price is reportedly high for both, leaving the 38 year-old Rhodes as a fine alternative. Plus, the '08 Mariners can live without him. Baker indicates that both Bedard and the Mariners favor a trade. However,...   Continue Reading

Twins Inquire On Adrian Beltre

The Twins' interest in Seattle third baseman Adrian Beltre has graduated from internal to external, according to La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Neal is not sure how far the two teams got in their trade discussion. Beltre, 29, is hitting .259/.330/.440 in 388 plate appearances this year. He's earning $12MM this year and the same in '09. His limited no-trade clause allows him to block deals to eight clubs. Complications: he's playing through a painful wrist injury, but also being called out by anonymous team coaches for not taking extra batting practice. On the Twins' side,...   Continue Reading

Week in Review

Here's a look back at the biggest stories MLBTR covered for the week of July 6 - 13: The Brewers completed a deal for C.C. Sabathia, sending Matt LaPorta and other prospects to Cleveland in return. Sabathia's looked great so far, and LaPorta's already making an impact in the Indians minor league system. Looks good for both teams right now if you ask this guy. The Cubs answered their division rival quickly, landing Oakland ace Rich Harden along with Chad Gaudin in exchange for Matt Murton, Sean Gallagher, Eric Patterson, and Josh Donaldson. Harden was brilliant in his debut. I...   Continue Reading

Twins Discuss Adrian Beltre Internally

WEDNESDAY: Christensen has an update on the Twins' deadline strategy. He says they are considering options to upgrade on the left side of the infield, though perhaps without a sense of urgency. He notes that they have discussed third baseman Adrian Beltre internally, but probably not with the Mariners. TUESDAY: According to Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Twins don't have a glaring need and are likely to be quiet at the trade deadline. The Twins are 1.5 games out in the AL Central. They're 8th of 14 AL teams in OBP and SLG. Nonetheless, they are third in...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Padilla, Manny, Beltre, Dunn

Rumor man Ken Rosenthal has a new column up. At least three teams have inquired on the Rangers' Vicente Padilla: the Mets, Yankees, and Brewers. Jon Daniels is looking for "quality young pitching." Manny Ramirez's $20MM option for '09 isn't a lock. It's a tough call - .900 OPS players on one-year deals don't grow on trees. Rosenthal suggests David DeJesus or Melky Cabrera would be nice fits for the Diamondbacks, who aren't looking for a rental. He also speculates on names like Brian Giles, David Dellucci, and Randy Winn. Note: Rosenthal is playing GM here, not relaying inside info...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Beltre, Washburn, Escobar, Duchscherer

Ken Rosenthal brings us his latest Full Count video: Rosenthal thinks the Mariners should consider dealing Adrian Beltre along with Erik Bedard by the deadline. The A's and Dodgers would be interested in the 29 year old. Also, Jarrod Washburn's stock is rising. If Kelvim Escobar makes a strong return to the Angels rotation, Jon Garland could wind up on the trading block. As it stands, Escobar is slated for relief duties initially. 30 year old Justin Duchscherer could be Billy Beane's best trade piece. His sparkling 1.99 ERA in combination with his being signed through this year for only...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Mariners, Brewers

Let's take a gander at Jon Heyman's latest column at SI.com. Heyman says three GMs who would have interest in Ichiro Suzuki have been told he's not available. Nonetheless, Heyman suggests trading the face of the franchise would be the best way to shake things up in Seattle. The Mariners have other valuable trade commodities: Erik Bedard, Raul Ibanez, and Adrian Beltre. Most of the team's other vets aren't valued highly, though Jarrod Washburn has strung together three decent starts. Felix Hernandez would draw a ton of interest, but the Mariners aren't expected to make him available. The Brewers' have...   Continue Reading

Giants Pursuing Corner Infield Help

I'm not sure of the Giants' plan - are they rebuilding? Playing for 2008? Kind of rebuilding but trying to seem respectable? At any rate, the Giants don't have much going on at first and third base. I like the idea of going after a cheap under-30 third base upside play like Dallas McPherson. But I wouldn't fill the spot with a vet just to fill it. As for first, I've said before I'd just toss Dan Ortmeier there for 550 ABs in lieu of adding some stopgap. But that's just me; here's the latest on Brian Sabean's corner infield..   Continue Reading

Yankees Aiming Higher Than Crede

According to Ken Davidoff of Newsday, the Yankees aren't likely to trade for Joe Crede. They're aiming for bigger fish like Mike Lowell, Adrian Beltre, Miguel Cabrera, and Scott Rolen. Garrett Atkins has been deemed unavailable. Additionally, Kenny Williams hopes to deal Crede relatively quickly and the Yankees are in no rush to fill their third base vacancy. Maybe the Phillies will jump into the fray for Crede. Lowell at least won't involve giving up young talent. But there are some questions about how he'd hit away from Fenway. And we're talking four or even five years to lure him...   Continue Reading

Mariners Considering Beltre Trade?

According to Ben Maller, the Mariners are considering trading Adrian Beltre to clear room on the payroll for Barry Zito. While he hasn't lived up to expectations as a Mariner, Beltre may yet earn his contract. He's only 28 next year, and his .285/.340/.552 line after the break fosters hope. He also plays superb defense by most accounts. If Beltre, a Scott Boras client, were a free agent right now, would he top three years, $36MM? Certainly. Given that the Mariners don't have a viable replacement for Beltre, shopping him seems unwise. The Padres wanted him back in July, but..   Continue Reading

Trade Rumor Roundup: 10 Days Left

Couple of fresh rumors surrounding the Padres' third base vacancy, and I'm proud to say that MLBTradeRumors was able to deduce these in advance. A week ago I compiled a spreadsheet of Kevin Towers' trading history since 2001, nerd that I am. From that we learned that Towers loves working with the Red Sox and also Bill Bavasi. That he would consider Adrian Beltre and Mike Lowell for his vacancy followed logically. Today, the Beltre rumor comes courtesy of Ken Rosenthal and Buster Olney threw down the Lowell rumor. If those two big dogs fall through, Towers could pursue previous..   Continue Reading
