Francisco Liriano Rumors

Perrotto's Latest: Twins, Damon, Franklin, Penny, Dye

John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus brings us his latest from around the leagues: When they come off the DL, Francisco Liriano and Glen Perkins will be used in relief. So, the Twins are hoping to add a starter who can pitch in the playoffs. This means they have until tomorrow at midnight to do so. The Yankees would like to re-sign Johnny Damon to a one year deal and give Austin Jackson a second year to develop at Triple-A, while pursuing Matt Holliday and Jason Bay in the offseason. The Marlins and Giants are frontrunners to land Brad Penny. The...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Jones, Peralta, Liriano

Lins for Saturday morning... As ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports, Adam Jones is pleased that the Orioles have so much pitching approaching the majors, but he wants to win now. SI.com's Tom Verducci calls Jones baseball's most improved player and breaks down the outfielder's hot start. Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Jhonny Peralta is playing third base for now. Rob Neyer of ESPN.com writes that there are no guarantees for Francisco Cervelli once Jose Molina and Jorge Posada are fully healthy. Neyer adds that the Twins need Francisco Liriano to take his game to the next level...   Continue Reading

Twins Sign 27 Players To 1-Year Deals

According to Joe Christensen, the Twins have announced they've signed the remaining 27 players on their roster to one-year deals. Writes Christensen, "All 27 of those players, including Francisco Liriano, Glen Perkins, Nick Blackburn and Kevin Slowey, have between zero and three years of major league experience, so their salaries are likely less than $500,000."   Continue Reading

Week in Review: 7/27 - 8/2

We saw the non-waiver trade deadline come and go this week, and plenty of action to go along with it. Let's recap the big moves of the week: The Dodgers, Pirates, and Red Sox completed a three-team, blockbuster trade that sent Manny Ramirez to Los Angeles, Jason Bay to Boston, and Andy LaRoche, Bryan Morris, Craig Hansen, and Brandon Moss to Pittsburgh. The Pirates got a pretty nice haul, and while Bay won't necessarily replace Manny's production, he's much more affordable, signed through '09, and doesn't disrupt the clubhouse. The Dodgers add the big bat they need for a push...   Continue Reading

Livan Hernandez To Be Designated

3:25pm: Joe Christensen says both Hernandez and Craig Monroe will likely be DFA'd today. Both were questionable acquisitions from Day 1. Francisco Liriano and Randy Ruiz will join the Twins. 8:23am: According to La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Twins are expected to designate Livan Hernandez for assignment today to make room for Francisco Liriano. The Twins are prepared to eat the remaining $1.66MM on Hernandez's contract. It's the right move, just several weeks too late. Hernandez turned into a pumpkin in late May, while Liriano has been on a tear for about a month. It...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Sosa, Rhodes, Twins, Rays, Cubs

A few minor notes from around the MLBiverse... The Mariners have signed Jorge Sosa to a minor league deal. This is Sosa's third organization this season. Despite reports that the Brewers would not add a relief pitcher, Milwaukee had a scout at Friday's game and Geoff Baker believes the scout was there to watch Arthur Rhodes. Joe Christensen says that the Twins may prefer to promote Francisco Liriano, and move him or another starter to the bullpen, rather than trade for a relief pitcher. Joe Maddon says that there is only a "50-50 chance" that the Rays make a move...   Continue Reading

Week in Review

Another week in the history books! Here's a look back from July 13-19: The Phillies acquired Joe Blanton from the A's for a package of three minor leaguers: Adrian Cardenas, Josh Outman, and Matthew Spencer. Cardenas and Outman were the Phils' #2 and #4 prospects. Personally, that seems like a lot to bring a pitcher who's already struggling to a much smaller park. Blanton is a much better pitcher than he's showed this season, however. Francisco Rodriguez will test the free-agent market this offseason. I don't think anyone would be surprised to see K-Rod sign a record-setting contract for a...   Continue Reading

Twins Won't Fault Liriano

Here's a quick update on Liriano-gate. Phil Miller of the twin cities Pioneer Press reports the Twins won't hold Francisco Liriano accountable for his agent's request to investigate the team's handling of the southpaw. Liriano had expressed frustration over his extended stay in the minors.   Continue Reading

Francisco Liriano Frustrated

Ken Rosenthal spoke to Francisco Liriano's agent, Greg Genske. The 24 year-old lefty is frustrated that he's still at Triple A, and Genske has contacted the Players' Association about filing a grievance. The union will investigate. Liriano is now dominating in the minors. Rosenthal says Liriano's arbitration year has already been pushed back by his time in the minors. Twins GM Bill Smith denies any shady money-saving tactics, saying "our starters are all doing the job." Most likely, the Twins would be an improved team by replacing Livan Hernandez in the rotation with Liriano. But this isn't the first time...   Continue Reading

Liriano Promotion Could Affect Arbitration

Francisco Liriano is pitching in his first major league game in 19 months today, and Twins fans have to be excited by that prospect. However, as pointed out by Joe Christensen of The Star-Tribune, had the Twins waited longer to promote Liriano from the AAA Rochester Red Wings (where his service time clock was on hold), the lefty wouldn't reach the three-year arbitration benchmark until after the 2009 season. As it stands now, with two years and 32 days of service, Liriano will see his salary move beyond the $1MM mark at the end of this season. Posted by Matt...   Continue Reading
