J.J. Hardy Rumors

Giants Closing In On Renteria, Talking Cantu Trade

4:49pm: SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Giants asked the Brewers about J.J. Hardy, but Milwaukee doesn't want to move him. So Brian Sabean moved on to Cantu. 4:12pm: Brian Sabean told reporters he hopes to sign a free agent infielder later this week. 3:42pm: Jon Heyman chimes in; he also thinks a two-year deal could be completed soon. Heyman says the Giants have yet to decide whether to target C.C. Sabathia, Mark Teixeira, or Manny Ramirez. Are we seeing a shift back to the win-now plan in San Francisco? 1:53pm: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick talked to Renteria's agent Barry Meister, who...   Continue Reading

Schulman On The Giants

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle gives us a look at what the Giants' offseason plans look like right now. For one, they'd like to upgrade at shortstop. However, the Giants' current pursuit of Rafael Furcal would be "impacted," says Schulman, by any deal that sends Jake Peavy to Atlanta. It's expected the Braves would get in on the bidding for Furcal if Peavy were acquired. By "impacted," I'm going to assume this means the Giants would be much less interested in the free agent shortstop. Second, they need an impact bat for the middle of the order. There...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Hardy, Flowers, Wolf

Another day, another column from Ken Rosenthal. With multiple vacancies in the rotation and bullpen, the Brewers may need to see what kind of pitching Mike Cameron and/or J.J. Hardy can bring in return. GM Doug Melvin is not ready to shop Hardy. He's received interest, but most teams have not given names (one team suggested swapping him for a pitcher Melvin termed, "a fifth starter.") The Padres have asked the Braves to substitute catcher Tyler Flowers for center fielder Gorkys Hernandez in their Jake Peavy offer. Dave O'Brien sees this as unlikely. If they can't sign Mark Teixeira, the...   Continue Reading

Twins Rumors: Blake, Escobar, Hardy

Joe Christensen has an update on the Twins' search for help on the left side of the infield. Minnesota is one of seven teams interested in Casey Blake, according to Blake's agent Jim McDowell. Blake hit .274/.345/.463 last year for the Indians and Dodgers this year. He's been released twice by the Twins, but he could come back to stabilize their third base situation. Christensen has sources who suggest that the Twins are also targeting Yunel Escobar and J.J. Hardy in trades. If no deal is made, they could re-sign Nick Punto, who played 61 games at shortstop in 2008....   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Fielder, Beimel, Eckstein

Ken Rosenthal is on the scene at the GM meetings, and as usual has all kinds of new info. The Brewers are unlikely to trade Prince Fielder, and reluctant to trade J.J. Hardy or Alcides Escobar. It'd be smart to retain those three players. Rosenthal still likes the Braves as the favorite for Jake Peavy, but wonders if the Cubs or another team could incorporate a third team to get it done. The Cubs will need to spend much of their available money on pitching, which may leave little payroll room for an outfielder like Bobby Abreu. They could backload...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Peavy Suitors, Lowe, Cardinals, Marlins

Ken Rosenthal has a new column up, focusing largely on suitors for Jake Peavy, but also touching on some other news at the end... so let's take a look! Rosenthal states that the following teams have been speculated to be suitors for the Padres' ace: Braves, Angels, Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Cubs, Astros, Dodgers, Cardinals, Brewers, Rays, Rangers. While all of these are not serious possibilities, he elaborates on each team. He mentions Yunel Escobar as a likely centerpiece from Atlanta, and states that the Angels would love to acquire a frontline starter to allow them to send Ervin Santana...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Sabathia, Hardy, Manny

Let's take a look at Jon Heyman's column from yesterday. The Yankees will go "all in" for C.C. Sabathia. Heyman sees the Dodgers, Mets, and Giants as other possible suitors. Heyman dismisses a rumor of J.J. Hardy, Prince Fielder, and another player for Matt Cain. He predicts a "feeding frenzy" for Hardy. I'm with Heyman though, I wouldn't be quick to trade him this winter. Heyman talked to a GM who feels the Mets will go after Boras client Manny Ramirez. If the five-year demand is accurate, the list of suitors will probably shrink significantly. Manny quote: "I gotta thank...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Vlad, Cano, Peavy, Hardy

Today we have a fresh column from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Vladimir Guerrero's $15MM option for '09 is a lock, but perhaps the Angels will reconsider extending him beyond that. Some of the money could be used to make Mark Teixeira the next franchise player. Rosenthal says "virtually every club with a need at the position" has shown interest in second baseman Robinson Cano. If you give Cano a mulligan for April, he hit .297/.326/.448 in 2008. That seems like a reasonable American League projection going forward. Cano, 26 in a few weeks, is signed through 2011 with two...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Huff, Hardy, Russ Ortiz

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports has a new column up. Mark Attanasio set a dangerous precedent by firing Ned Yost. Will he interfere with GM Doug Melvin's plans in the future? Rosenthal considers Aubrey Huff a "highly desirable trade commodity" this winter. That begs the question - why did Huff pass through waivers unclaimed in August? Trading J.J. Hardy is more likely than moving him to third base. Hardy is under team control for two more seasons. The Jays, Tigers, Royals, Twins, Giants, Dodgers, and Cardinals could be in the market for a shortstop. Demand certainly outstrips supply. Rosenthal believes...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Mets, Brewers, Astros

Ken Rosenthal has a lot to offer in his latest Full Count video: The Mets will prefer to pickup Carlos Delgado's $12MM option rather than buy him out for $4MM. That's a guarantee for a guy who should finish the year around 35-100 despite not contributing for the first two months. According to sources, Manny Ramirez is unlikely to go the Mets. They will more likely focus their spending on pitching. John Maine has a bone spur in his right shoulder. Pedro Martinez and Oliver Perez are free agents. The Mets will need to go after starting pitching. If the...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Giles, Dodgers, Indians, Fielder

Ken Rosenthal has a new Full Count video up over at FOX Sports. Here's the highlights: The Red Sox wanted to use Brian Giles in right field against certain right-handers, and shift J.D. Drew over to center field for those games. Giles blocked the trade for family reasons, according to Rosenthal, despite the chance at an increased pay day and an opportunity to play in the postseason. Rosenthal says that while the Dodgers are under pressure to re-sign Manny Ramirez, there may be more pressure to sign Casey Blake after this season. Rosenthal points out that Blake is batting .333...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Fuentes, Holliday, Sherrill

Ken Rosenthal tops off the day with a column full of rumors. Signing Mark Teixeira as a replacement for Manny Ramirez doesn't make sense for the Red Sox, who don't want to take on that kind of mega-contract. The Phillies were recently working on a blockbuster with Colorado that would have netted them Brian Fuentes and Matt Holliday for something like Shane Victorino, J.A. Happ, Carlos Carrasco, and Lou Marson. Those talks have stalled, and the added payroll might've been a problem for the Phillies anyway. Though Frank McCourt denies it, Rosenthal says the Dodgers owned vetoed a CC Sabathia/Casey...   Continue Reading

Dodgers Interested In Jack Wilson, C.C. Sabathia

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Dodgers have jumped into the fray for C.C. Sabathia. They don't have a Matt LaPorta-caliber prospect, but they could make a substantial three-player offer. The Dodgers, being a big market club, could try to sign Sabathia before he hits free agency. Rosenthal says the Dodgers are simultaneously pursuing Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson. He might require some of the same prospects, so L.A. probably can't get both Wilson and Sabathia. Since Wilson is signed for '09, such an acquisition might allow the Dodgers to let Rafael Furcal walk as a free agent. Based on Ned Colletti's...   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Harang, Bedard, Hardy, Weeks, McLouth

Brand new column from ESPN's Jayson Stark. Stark explains why he feels the trade deadline is overrated. I guess it all depends on what you expect from it. You may recall Walt Jocketty's Reds untouchables list from a few weeks ago. It did not include Aaron Harang. While the Reds might listen on Harang, there wouldn't be any kind of discount. The Mariners have pushed Erik Bedard to the backburner, focusing on shopping other veterans. They're also not dying to move Raul Ibanez at the moment. The Brewers might be willing to include J.J. Hardy or Rickie Weeks in a...   Continue Reading

Brewers Rumors: Rolen, Andruw, Mench

MLB.com's Adam McCalvy posted a Brewers article yesterday that's worthy of discussion. One reliever Doug Melvin has considered that I hadn't heard before: Eddie Guardado. Hey, at least he'd come cheap. Players like Rickie Weeks, J.J. Hardy, and Corey Hart won't be moved. No surprise there. McCalvy says Melvin confirmed having internal discussions about Scott Rolen. Would John Mozeliak trade him within the division? More importantly, would the Brewers take on the money and injury risk? The obvious match would be to send a starter over to St. Louis for Rolen. Which starters are available? Though you can never have..   Continue Reading
