Chris Mazza Elects Free Agency

Reliever Chris Mazza has cleared waivers and elected minor league free agency, tweets Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The righty had been designated for assignment by the Rays earlier in the week.

Mazza signed a minor league deal over the offseason and cracked the Opening Day roster. He was called upon by skipper Kevin Cash twice out of the bullpen, allowing ten runs (seven earned) over 5 1/3 combined innings. Mazza landed on the injured list two weeks into the season due to back spasms, and he was eventually transferred to the 60-day IL. The 32-year-old recently returned to health, but the Rays chose to DFA him rather than put him back onto the MLB roster.

That brief look in April marked four consecutive seasons of some MLB action for Mazza, who debuted with the 2019 Mets. He pitched for the Red Sox during the abbreviated 2020 campaign and has spent the past couple seasons in Tampa Bay. Through 79 major league innings, the California native owns a 5.35 ERA with a modest 18.5% strikeout rate.

While he’s yet to cement himself in any team’s major league bullpen, Mazza has a solid minor league track record. He owns a 3.68 ERA through parts of four years in Triple-A, where he’s punched out a more capable 23.9% of batters faced. That resume should allow him to land with another team on a minor league pact over the coming days or weeks.

Latest On Manuel Margot

June 22: Cash provided a fairly positive update on Margot Wednesday, telling reporters the early testing results “are looking better than not” (Topkin link). He’s facing an extended absence in any event and a specific timetable won’t be known until the club has an official diagnosis, but Cash indicated Margot could still return this season.

June 21: Tampa Bay has placed both Margot and Kiermaier on the injured list. Infielder Jonathan Aranda is up for his Major League debut, and outfielder Luke Raley has been recalled as well.

Topkin tweeted this morning that the team expects Margot’s absence to be “significant,” and Jim Bowden of The Athletic suggests there are those in the organization who fear an ACL injury to Margot. The Rays announced that the results of Margot’s MRI are still pending and are continuing to refer to it as a “knee sprain” for the time being.

June 20: The Rays are likely to place outfielders Manuel Margot and Kevin Kiermaier on the 10-day injured list, manager Kevin Cash told reporters (including Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times). Both players made early exits from tonight’s loss to the Yankees, and Margot in particular seems to be facing an extended absence.

Margot had to be carted off the field in the top of the ninth inning. Playing right field, he leaped into the wall in pursuit of an Aaron Hicks fly ball. He landed awkwardly on his right knee after the collision and had to be carted off the field. Cash said after the game he’s been diagnosed with a knee sprain and ominously noted “it doesn’t look good.”

Kiermaier, meanwhile, departed after the second inning. The team later announced he was dealing with inflammation in his left hip, and that issue will apparently require he miss at least a week and a half. It marked the second time in five days that Kiermaier had to make an early exit, and while his latest issue is different than the Achilles inflammation that forced his departure last Wednesday, it’ll lead to an absence of some kind.

Needless to say, the loss of a couple regular outfielders will force Tampa Bay to dip into its depth. Randy Arozarena has started at designated hitter in each of the past two nights, but he’ll now head back to left field on a more or less everyday basis. Highly-regarded rookie Josh Lowe was recalled before tonight’s game after a six-week stint in Triple-A Durham. He figures to assume regular reps in either center or right field, but it remains to be seen how much of an offensive impact he’ll make. The 24-year-old has only a .179/.257/.328 line through his first 75 MLB plate appearances; he posted big numbers with the Bulls but also struck out at an alarming 31.2% rate in the minors.

Tampa Bay has a pair of out-of-options backup outfielders on the active roster in Brett Phillips and Harold Ramírez. Both players could assume larger roles with Margot and Kiermaier out, but each would probably be miscast as an everyday player. Phillips is an excellent defender but is hitting .172/.238/.291 with a 41.6% strikeout rate. Ramírez is performing at the plate (.297/.337/.386) but has rated as a well below-average defender throughout his career.

The Rays could turn to a loose platoon arrangement between the left-handed hitting Phillips and the righty-swinging Ramírez in right field with Lowe playing center, particularly if they anticipate Kiermaier’s absence being on the shorter side. Former Dodger Luke Raley is on the 40-man roster and hitting well in Durham, and he could be recalled to add some offense-first bench depth. It seems likely the club will at least poke around the market for potential external additions, though, considering the amount of uncertainty with each of Lowe, Phillips, Ramírez and Raley.

It has been a rough stretch for the Rays, who’ve been without their primary middle infield of Brandon Lowe and Wander Franco and their #1 backstop Mike Zunino for weeks. The losses of Margot and Kiermaier will leave the club without five of their regular position players, and it’s little surprise the team has sputtered of late. Tampa Bay has dropped six of their past seven games to fall to 36-31. They now sit a half-game back of the Red Sox for the final Wild Card spot in the American League.

The rough injury news wasn’t limited to what happened tonight, as Cash also provided a discouraging update on reliever Nick Anderson pregame. The right-hander has been on the IL all season after undergoing a UCL brace procedure last October. His initial recovery timeline suggested a possible return around the All-Star Break, but Cash said he’s still feeling elbow discomfort and will go for further evaluation tomorrow (Topkin link). More will obviously be known in the coming days, but it seems unlikely the 31-year-old will be back on a major league mound in the near future.

Rays Designate Chris Mazza For Assignment

The Rays announced Monday that they’ve reinstated right-hander Chris Mazza from the 60-day injured list and designated him for assignment. Mazza, who’s been sidelined since mid-April due to back spasms, saw his 20-day minor league rehab window run out and the Rays apparently didn’t see enough to bring him back to the big league roster. He’s out of minor league options, the team couldn’t simply send him down and had to designate him for assignment. Tampa Bay will now have a week to trade Mazza, attempt to pass him through outright waivers, or release him.

Mazza, 32, has seen big league time in each of the past four seasons, pitching to a combined 5.35 ERA in 79 innings with the Mets, Red Sox and Rays. He tossed 27 1/3 innings of 4.61 ERA ball for the Rays in 2021 but was torched for 10 runs (seven earned) in 5 1/3 innings this year before landing on the injured list.

Though he’s never missed bats at a high level (career 18.5% strikeout rate) and has a slightly worse-than-average career walk rate (9.2%), Mazza has also thrived when it comes to inducing feeble contact. That was particularly true with the 2021 Rays, when he allowed just an 85.5 mph average exit velocity and saw only 29.7% of batted balls against him clock in at 95 mph or more. Those trends went in the wrong direction this season, however, and Mazza’s rehab work in Durham clearly didn’t inspire enough confidence in his ability to right the ship. In 13 innings of Triple-A work, he yielded nine runs (seven earned) on 16 hits and six walks with 18 strikeouts.

Injury Notes: Zunino, Buehler, Woodruff

The Rays have been without backstop Mike Zunino for a week, as he landed on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation last Friday. The club has worked to pin down the diagnosis in recent days, and manager Kevin Cash indicated yesterday that Zunino may be dealing with thoracic outlet syndrome (via Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times). He’ll receive a Botox injection in hopes of alleviating the symptoms, and the club expects to have a more defined treatment program by next week.

If the injection doesn’t have the desired effect, it’s possible Zunino would need surgery to address the issue. A thoracic outlet procedure would come with a months-long rehab process and end his 2022 campaign. TOS surgery has become more prevalent around the league in recent years, although it’s been a far more common issue for pitchers than for position players. The Rays have relied on a Francisco Mejía – René Pinto pairing behind the dish in Zunino’s absence, and a long-term or season-ending issue could inspire them to turn to the trade market for help. Tampa Bay could arguably stand to upgrade even if Zunino is able to rehab and work his way back quickly, as the impending free agent is hitting only .148/.195/.304 through 36 games this season.

The latest developments on some other notable injury situations around the game:

  • The Dodgers placed Walker Buehler on the injured list last week after the righty was diagnosed with a flexor strain in his forearm. Shortly after landing on the shelf, Buehler underwent an arthroscopic procedure to remove a bone spur from his elbow, he told reporters this week (via Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register and Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times). The two-time All-Star indicated he’s been pitching through the spur for years and decided it best to remove it while he’s already shut down from throwing because of the flexor issue. The procedure isn’t expected to affect his recovery timeline, and Buehler reiterated he expects to be back on a major league mound 10-12 weeks from now. It’s not clear whether he’ll have enough time to build up as a prototypical starter for the stretch run, but if all goes as planned, he should be available as a postseason weapon for manager Dave Roberts.
  • Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff will join Triple-A Nashville for a rehab start tomorrow, tweets Will Sammon of the Athletic. It’ll be the first of two likely minor league appearances before the right-hander is set to return to American Family Field. Woodruff has been out since suffering a right high ankle sprain in late May. While he recovered quite quickly from the leg issue, he was dealt a bit of a setback when a battle with Raynaud’s syndrome — a condition that causes decreased blood flow to a person’s fingers — resulted in some numbness on his throwing hand. Fortunately, he was able to restart a throwing program within days and is apparently in good enough shape to progress to game action.

Injury Notes: Rays, Cubs, Angels

The Rays placed starter Drew Rasmussen on the 15-day injured list yesterday (retroactive to June 12) with a left hamstring strain. Ralph Garza Jr. was recalled to take his roster spot. The 26-year-old Rasmussen has been solid for Tampa over 12 starts, posting a 3.41 ERA/3.90 FIP across 58 innings. Garza has been a frequent call-up for Kevin Cash’s club, making 11 appearances with a 3.27 ERA/4.64 FIP over 22 innings. He’ll return to his spot in the bullpen for now. Elsewhere around the game…

  • The Cubs placed second baseman Nick Madrigal on the 10-day injured list yesterday with a left groin strain. The move was retroactive to June 12th. The Cubbies were lauded for their acquisition of the 25-year-old, but he has yet to find his stride in Wrigleyville, hitting just .222/.263/.250 through 115 plate appearances. He’s been solid defensively, however, posting 3 DRS without making an error thus far. Veteran Jonathan Villar has taken over at the keystone in Madrigal’s absence, with Andrelton Simmons and rookie Christopher Morel also seeing some run there.
  • The Angels are nearing a decision point about Anthony Rendon, per Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. Rendon has missed four games because of the same wrist that caused him to miss 12 games earlier this month. If he can’t get back in the lineup soon, the Angels won’t have much choice but to put him back on the shelf. A litany of setbacks has kept Rendon from achieving his Nationals form over his three-year tenure with the Angels. So far this season, he was slashing .228/.324/.383, not a bad mark overall (106 wRC+), though still lacking in the power department.

Kevin Kiermaier Leaves Game With Achilles Inflammation

Longtime Rays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier was replaced in the third inning of tonight’s matchup against the Yankees. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that left Achilles inflammation was the reason Kiermaier was unable to return to the field. The club is likely to reveal more details about the injury in the coming days.

While tonight’s exit may go down as little more than a hiccup in what has been a generally healthy season for the center fielder, any injury news concerning a player with as checkered an injury past as Kiermaier is worth mentioning. The timing of these tendon troubles, should they linger, comes at a fairly inopportune for the 32-year-old as well. Through 52 games the veteran has slashed .225/.260/.385 (90 OPS+) with a surprising seven home runs and five stolen bases (in six attempts).

While that offensive output measures up surprisingly well to the other generally cold bats around the league, there’s no doubt Kiermaier and the Rays have hoped for offensive numbers closer to his career norms. More concerning however, is how the former Platinum Glove winner is faring defensively. Defensive metrics ranging from Outs Above Average to Defensive Runs Saved all peg Kiermaier as a middling to slightly above average center fielder this season, a far cry from his elite 2021 play. There’s plenty of time left in the season for defensive metrics, which are notoriously high variance, to paint the portrait of Kiermaier as an elite defensive outfielder. Still, any lower body injury figures to negatively affect Kiermaier’s top-of-the-charts speed and defensive performance.

Kiermaier remains under club control with the Rays through 2023 via a $13MM club option. The likelihood of that option getting picked up, or any free agent interest in the event it’s declined, figure to take a hit if tonight’s injury proves significant. Defensive wizards with passable bats can still collect on short-term deals, as Andrelton Simmons did with the Twins last season, but any prolonged injury would represent a disappointing conclusion to Kiermaier’s contract following last year’s strong campaign.

Rays Reinstate Shane Baz, Option Ralph Garza Jr.

The Rays announced a number of roster moves today, reinstating Shane Baz from the 60-day injured list, optioning Ralph Garza Jr. to Triple-A, and transferring Andrew Kittredge to the 60-day injured list, per Rays’ broadcaster Neil Solondz (via Twitter).

The Kittredge move opens a spot on the 40-man roster for Baz, but it was a foregone conclusion after the revelation that Kittredge needs Tommy John surgery. He’ll be out for the rest of this season and potentially all of next season as well.

Bittersweet as the moment may be, the Rays will be excited to get Baz back on the hill. Still just 22 years old, Baz burned through the minors last season in time to make three starts at the end of the regular campaign. He has been out so far this season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow. The Rays believed in Baz enough to give him the start in game two of the American League Division Series.

He will make his debut start against the Twins. Theoretically (health provided), Baz should become a rotation staple alongside Shane McClanahan, Drew Rasmussen, and Corey Kluber, giving Tampa a more traditional rotation than they’re accustomed to in recent years.

As for Garza, the 28-year-old has made 11 appearances on the year for Tampa, logging 22 innings with a 3.27 ERA/4.64 FIP. Garza was claimed off waivers from the Red Sox, for whom he never made an appearance.

Andrew Kittredge To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

Rays’ right-hander Andrew Kittredge will be undergoing Tommy John surgery, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

This news comes as a very unfortunate development for Kittredge and the team. The righty had been placed on the 15-day injured list just yesterday, with manager Kevin Cash telling reporters that Kittredge needed a procedure to remove a loose body from his elbow. Though he was expected to miss at least a month, it appears that further testing has revealed the situation is actually much more dire, with Kittredge now to miss the remainder of the season, and likely much of 2023 as well.

Last year was a tremendous breakout for the reliever, as he threw 71 2/3 innings with a 1.88 ERA, 27.3% strikeout rate, 5.3% walk rate and 53.5% ground ball rate. That success earned him a key role in the bullpen, as he eventually earned eight saves and seven holds. This year, he has been slowed by a few injuries, as he also spent time on the IL due to a back issue earlier this year. Through 20 frames on the season, his ERA has gone up to 3.15 while his strikeout rate has fallen all the way to 18.7%.

For Kittredge personally, it’s very unfortunate given his late-bloomer status. He didn’t make his major league debut until he was 27 and is currently 32 years old. He finished last season with three years and 70 days of service time, qualifying for arbitration for the first time. He and the team agreed to a $1.85MM salary for this year. With another season like he had in 2021, he could have earned himself a nice raise going forward. Unfortunately, this mostly lost season will limit him in that department.

For the Rays, it’s an unfortunate blow to a bullpen that has already taken a few punches this year. Nick Anderson, Pete Fairbanks, JT Chargois and Chris Mazza are all already on the 60-day IL due to significant injuries and will now be joined by Kittredge whenever the Rays need to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. They also recently lost J.P. Feyereisen to the 15-day IL. Despite missing those players as well as a bunch of starting pitchers, the club enters play tonight with a record of 34-23, placing them in the American League’s top Wild Card spot.

Rays Place Andrew Kittredge On Injured List

The Rays put reliever Andrew Kittredge on the 15-day injured list this morning, recalling Calvin Faucher to take his spot on the active roster. Kittredge is dealing with right elbow discomfort, and he’s going to miss a fair bit of time.

Manager Kevin Cash told reporters (including Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times) the righty is likely to undergo a procedure to remove a loose body from his elbow. He’ll be out of action for at least a month, dealing another hit to a relief corps that lost J.P. Feyereisen last week and has been without Pete Fairbanks, Nick Anderson, JT Chargois and Chris Mazza for most or all of the season.

Kittredge had a stellar 2021 season, tossing 71 2/3 innings of 1.88 ERA ball as one of the club’s highest-leverage arms. He punched out a strong 27.3% of batters faced, induced grounders on more than half the batted balls against him and was one of the sport’s best strike-throwing relievers. Kittredge picked up a deserved All-Star nod for that work, but he’s not managed to replicate that success through the first couple months of this season.

In 20 innings, the 32-year-old has seen his ERA jump to 3.15 while his strikeout percentage has plummeted to 18.7%. Kittredge has still thrown plenty of strikes and been effective overall, but he’s seen his swing-and-miss and ground-ball rates take step backs relative to last year’s marks. He also missed a bit of time with back tightness last month, and his elbow issue seems likely to keep him out until after the All-Star Break.

Kittredge is playing this season on a $1.85MM salary after he and the club avoided arbitration. He’ll go through that process twice more before first qualifying for free agency after the 2024 campaign.

Rays Option Ryan Yarbrough To Triple-A

The Rays announced Tuesday that lefty Ryan Yarbrough has been optioned to Triple-A Durham. Right-hander Luke Bard is up from Durham in his place.

This is the first optional assignment to the minors for Yarbrough in three years, as the 30-year-old southpaw had entrenched himself on the Tampa Bay pitching staff with generally solid performances. Last year’s 5.11 ERA was unsightly, but Yarbrough still soaked up a team-leading 155 innings on the heels of the shortened 2020 season — at a time when all 30 teams were extra cautious with pitcher workloads. Despite the career-worst ERA, Yarbrough was tendered a contract in anticipation of a return to his 2018-20 form, when the southpaw notched a 3.94 ERA with a 20.3% strikeout rate and very strong 5.8% walk rate over 344 2/3 innings.

That, however, hasn’t come to pass. Quite to the contrary, in fact, as Yarbrough will lug a career-worst 5.65 ERA to Durham for the time being. Yarbrough’s most recent outing against the White Sox was one of the worst of his career, as he was tattooed for six runs on eight hits and two walks with no strikeouts in just 1 2/3 innings.

Right-hander Shane Baz is nearing a return to the big league rotation, where the team already has Shane McClanahan, Drew Rasmussen, Corey Kluber and spontaneous Rays breakout du jour Jeffrey Springs all pitching quite well. Yarbrough could be out of a rotation spot at that point anyhow, and since he just started on Sunday, the Rays will take this time to get a fresh arm into the bullpen in the form of Bard.

Yarbrough has more than four years of Major League service time but does not have the five years needed to refuse an optional assignment. He’ll work with the Rays’ staff in hopes of engineering a rebound, although it’s worth pointing out that his downturn over the past two seasons coincides with a drop to a career-low 86.7 mph average on his fastball.

Tampa Bay controls Yarbrough through the 2024 season, but given this year’s struggles and now this demotion to the minors, he’ll be a clear non-tender candidate at season’s end if he can’t get back on track. With Baz on the mend and Luis Patino, Yonny Chirinos, Brendan McKay and (ideally) Tyler Glasnow eventually to follow, the Rays may feel Yarbrough is best deployed as a reliever. It’s also feasible, given their annual payroll limitations, that they’ll look to move Yarbrough and shed some of his salary as the trade deadline draws nearer. That’ll depend on the health of the rest of the staff, of course, but the Rays — as is the case every year — aren’t exactly hurting for pitching depth.
