Eddie Guardado Rumors

Bill Smith On Trading Delmon Young

Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune has a quote from Twins GM Bill Smith on Delmon Young: "He is a 22-year-old outfielder with a bright future, and if we were going to trade him, we would have to get equal value." Young may not be easy to pry loose, but it doesn't sound like he's untouchable. There haven't been many serious trade rumors about Young yet. In other Twins notes, Hartman says the team doesn't plan on retaining free agent Eddie Guardado but hopes to re-sign Dennys Reyes.   Continue Reading

Week In Review: 8/24 - 8/30

Sunday afternoon is here again... let's have a look back at some of the moves and rumors since last time: The injury-plagued Red Sox acquired Mark Kotsay to help compensate for their injuries. In exchange, the Braves received minor league outfielder Luis Sumoza. Nice acquisition by the Red Sox; Kotsay has been swinging a solid bat this season. The Twins acquired Eddie Guardado from Texas in exchange for minor league pitcher Mark Hamburger. Guardado has spent the majority of his career with Minnesota and provides a solid arm to the bullpen. To make room for him, they DFA'd Mike Lamb....   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Ricciardi, Guardado, Alvarez

Let's round 'em up... Chat today, 2pm CST. Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star tries to view J.P. Ricciardi's tenure from both sides. Drunk Jays Fans gives their take on the article. Aaron Gleeman takes a closer look at Eddie Guardado, while Jamey Newberg tells us about Mark Hamburger. Inspired by Nelson Cruz's excellent '08 MLB debut, Rob Neyer and Sam Mellinger discuss cheap talent and "4A" players. Do Jeff Bailey, Mike Hessman, Joe Koshansky, Scott McClain, Terry Tiffee, and Josh Whitesell fit the bill? It's always fun when these guys get a legitimate shot. The Pirates are getting frustrated...   Continue Reading

Twins Acquire Eddie Guardado

3:30pm: The Rangers will receive minor league reliever Mark Hamburger. La Velle E. Neal III expects the Twins to pick up the rest of Guardado's salary. 2:13pm: According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, the Twins have acquired Eddie Guardado from the Rangers. Joe Christensen wrote on Friday that the Twins would make a claim but didn't expect a deal. Guardado has been useful for the Rangers, posting a 3.65 ERA in 49.1 innings. The ERA is a bit deceiving, but it's still a helpful addition for the Twins. Guardado is a familiar face, having spent a decade...   Continue Reading

Twins Interested In Guardado

Everyday Eddie Guardado, a Twins mainstay for a decade, has apparently been placed on waivers by the Rangers. Joe Christensen says the Twins are interested and will probably make a claim, but don't expect to make a deal. He says the Twins were eyeing Guardado in July but wouldn't meet the Rangers' price. Guardado is currently closing for the Rangers, getting it done with a 3.21 ERA. A deeper look at his numbers indicates rougher waters ahead, but he's certainly a useful reliever. As far as I can tell, Guardado only has about $680K left on his contract this year....   Continue Reading

Graziano's Latest: Schoeneweis, Rhodes, Pavano

Here's a look at the fresh rumors from Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger. The Yankees, Tigers, Rangers, and Rays have talked to the Mets about Scott Schoeneweis. The Mets might prefer to acquire a replacement if they move Schoeneweis. Arthur Rhodes is one possibility if he doesn't end up in Florida. Geoff Baker believes it's down to the Marlins and Brewers for Rhodes, with the other getting Eddie Guardado. The Yanks might have to acquire a reliever now that they've dealt Kyle Farnsworth. Rhodes isn't on their radar though. The Ivan Rodriguez trade could kick off other trades for...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Street, Zaun, Guardado, Blalock

Let's round up some odds and ends for a rumor-packed day. The Reds had a scout at a recent Rangers-A's game; they may have been eyeing a Texas catcher. Billy Beane is still fielding offers for Huston Street; Jon Heyman mentions the same teams we've heard in the past. Ed Wade told Miguel Tejada he's staying put. Gregg Zaun would welcome a trade. GM J.P. Ricciardi responded by saying "someone has to want you." The Marlins could make sense; their catcher hunt may hinge on Matt Treanor's decision whether to have surgery. John Maine has a mild rotator cuff strain....   Continue Reading

Marlins Looking For Catcher, Reliever

The NL East is a three-team race, with the Mets, Phillies, and Marlins all within a game of each other. Who'd have thought the Marlins would be contending after trading Miguel Cabrera? According to Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Marlins have intensified their search for a catcher. The targets: Bengie Molina, Ramon Hernandez, Gerald Laird, and Ryan Doumit. Molina and Hernandez are the pricey options. Doumit would be especially tough to pry loose; he has a .937 OPS this year as a 27 year-old. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro wonders if Miguel Olivo, Gregg Zaun, and Paul Lo Duca...   Continue Reading

Perrotto's Latest: Ross, Jacobs, Kent, Burnett

Baseball Prospectus' John Perrotto has a new column. The Mets are looking at relievers Huston Street, Brian Fuentes, Arthur Rhodes, and Eddie Guardado. On the radar for outfielders: Jason Bay, Raul Ibanez, and Randy Winn. A new suitor for Fuentes has emerged: the Diamondbacks. Would they really make another move for a reliever? Other known suitors were named here. The Marlins would consider trading Cody Ross or Mike Jacobs for relief help. New name on the Rays' radar: Dodgers second baseman Jeff Kent. They're better off with Akinori Iwamura aren't they? George Sherrill suitors: Cardinals, Tigers, Dodgers, Marlins, and Phillies....   Continue Reading

Stark's Latest: Teixeira, Padilla, Sheffield, Beltre

ESPN's Jayson Stark has a new Rumblings and Grumblings up. You may want to grab a glass of water or something, because this is a beast of a column. If the Braves have a bad weekend and decide to trade Mark Teixeira, a deal could come together quickly. Stark says the Braves have already touched base with the Rays, Red Sox, Dodgers, Angels and Yankees. Where Tex fits on the Rays, I'm not sure. Additionally, interest in Will Ohman is said to be "massive." A Jorge Posada move to first base could affect the Yankees' interest in Teixeira this winter....   Continue Reading

The Lefty Reliever Market

Odds and Ends: Morneau, Jocketty, Santana

Your usual dose of random rumors and links... Justin Morneau says he has had no extension discussions with the Twins. The Reds brought Walt Jocketty aboard as a special advisor to President and CEO Bob Castellini today. For now, Wayne Krivsky's job appears safe. But jeez, with Walt in the house he has to be feeling a little pressure, doesn't he? In other news, the Reds talked with Brett Tomko's agent this week. The Tigers signed Matt Mantei for the league minimum. He can ask for his release if he's not in the bigs by May 1st. As Jon Paul..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Mantei, Foulke, Cairo, Guardado

Here are this morning's random rumors and links. Matt Mantei will throw for the Tigers this week, and hopes to get a minor league deal. The 34 year-old hasn't pitched in the bigs since 2005 for Boston. The D'Backs will watch Keith Foulke throw later this month as he attempts his comeback after a year off. The Indians and Red Sox are other teams Foulke may have special interest in. The Mariners signed Miguel Cairo in an effort to push incumbent second baseman Jose Lopez. Cairo has a career line of .267/.315/.367, while Lopez is at .261/.295/.379. Cairo is the..   Continue Reading

Rangers Rumors: Guardado, Cameron, Hamilton

MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has all the latest hot stove buzz around the Rangers. The Rangers are nearing a deal with Eddie Guardado. Everyday Eddie might be a dark horse to close, if he can flash his late season form again. The Reds decided in October that he was not worth $3.5MM, and declined his option. Guardado is 37. The Rangers hope to add some kind of veteran starter. Bartolo Colon and Jason Jennings are still options, but Mark Prior and Freddy Garcia pretty much are not. Sullivan names Mike Maroth, Mark Hendrickson, and Josh Towers as pitchers of interest. Mike..   Continue Reading

Brewers Rumors: Rolen, Andruw, Mench

MLB.com's Adam McCalvy posted a Brewers article yesterday that's worthy of discussion. One reliever Doug Melvin has considered that I hadn't heard before: Eddie Guardado. Hey, at least he'd come cheap. Players like Rickie Weeks, J.J. Hardy, and Corey Hart won't be moved. No surprise there. McCalvy says Melvin confirmed having internal discussions about Scott Rolen. Would John Mozeliak trade him within the division? More importantly, would the Brewers take on the money and injury risk? The obvious match would be to send a starter over to St. Louis for Rolen. Which starters are available? Though you can never have..   Continue Reading

Reds Pick Up Dunn's $13MM Option

ESPN reports the Reds have exercised Adam Dunn's $13MM club option. This is expected and activates a full no-trade clause for Dunn through June 15th. As Tim noted here, he'll then have the option to choose 10 clubs to which he can be traded. MLBTR readers were more or less unanimously in favor of Dunn's return. 40 homers at $13MM seems a no-brainer to me. He's a patient hitter and the Reds' most potent bat. At that price, if the Reds do intend to deal him they will find ample value. But don't forget that Reds CEO Bob Castellini told..   Continue Reading

Dunn, Hatteberg Option Decisions Due Sunday

According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Reds have to make decisions on the options for Adam Dunn, Scott Hatteberg, Eddie Guardado, and Javier Valentin by November 4th. Dunn is the big one; his is for $13MM with a $0.5MM buyout. This is an easy decision to exercise, though it will cause full no-trade protection to kick in until June 15th. After that he gets to choose 10 clubs to which he would accept a trade. But I think that if the Reds want him out of town the two parties will find a way to make it..   Continue Reading

Reds Acquire Guardado

The Reds swapped oft-traded starter Travis Chick for southpaw reliever Eddie Guardado today. Cincinnati's bullpen ERA of 5.28 is dead last in the National League. They've also blown 13 saves, third worst. Current closer Todd Coffey's 1.38 WHIP doesn't gel with his 3.08 ERA. He's fortunate that it's that low. With a 5.9 K/9, Coffey is more hittable than most teams like their closers. Since June 1st, Coffey has blown two saves and taken three losses. 35 year-old Guardado has been even more hittable, and he's also had worse control and allowed a ton of home runs. The Reds should..   Continue Reading
