By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 6, 2009 at 12:10pm CST]
Jon Heyman of SI.com lists his mid-season award winners, led by Albert Pujols and Joe Mauer. Here are Heyman's latest rumors: Huston Street alone is worth more on the trade market than Matt Holliday. Dan O'Dowd must be happy with his return, which also included Carlos Gonzalez. Jhonny Peralta, Kerry Wood and Carl Pavano are all available. Indians GM Mark Shapiro believes he can still get a fair return for Cliff Lee if he deals him a year from now, a few months before the lefty is scheduled to become free agent. One executive says the Royals are "pushing" Brian...

One more roundup of links for the night... George. A. King III of The New York Post mentions that the Pirates had two scouts watch the Yankees earlier this week, possibly in advance of a deal involving lefty reliever John Grabow. He mentions that the Dodgers and Rockies had scouts on hand as well. The Yanks have already expressed interest in Huston Street earlier this season. King also says that the Yanks refuse to talk about prospects Austin Jackson and Austin Romine in trade talks according to other organizations. Peter Schmuck of The Baltimore Sun recaps the first half of...

On this date back in 2003, Johnny Damon hit a single, a double, and a triple in a 14-run first inning against the Marlins. The Red Sox set a league record by scoring ten runs before making an out. On to the linkage... Matthew Pouliot of Circling The Bases says that Dayton Moore's moves over the last season and a half are enough to warrant his dismissal. He notes they have a more than qualified replacement already in-house in senior advisor Mike Arbuckle. Ben Bolch of The LA Times notes that Jason Schmidt threw 104 pitches over 7.2 shutout in...

Some links to peruse as we await the baseball equivalent of the Shaq trade... MLB.com's Bill Ladson reports that Ronnie Belliard isn't sure if he'll play another season. Mark DeRosa tops the list of infielders most likely to be traded, if you ask Matthew Pouliot of NBC Sports. Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post says the Rockies shouldn't deal anyone but Garrett Atkins. Huston Street believes getting traded led to a "good opportunity," according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. ESPN.com's Rob Neyer says Luis Ayala is far from irreplaceable. I'll be talking rumors on the TEAM 1380...

Some Friday evening linkage... Nick Piecoro says that if Brandon Webb's latest setback requires surgery, it would give the club pause about picking up his $8.5MM option for 2010. Paul DePodesta runs through all of the Padres' recent roster moves. Rockies reliever Manny Corpas had an MRI on his right elbow today according to Patrick Saunders. Both the team and Corpas were surprised since he has pitched effectively of late. Depending on the severity of the injury, this may impact the Rockies' decision to trade closer Huston Street. Thomas Boswell at The Washington Post says we "will see little or...

Jon Heyman of SI.com says those closest to the Pedro Martinez situation expect him to sign soon. Heyman has many more rumors; here they are: One GM thinks the Nationals are demanding too much in return for their players. He says they want "a dollar and a quarter for a dollar." As Heyman points out, interim GM Mike Rizzo has an especially tough role, since his job isn't secure. Heyman says the Nats will make an announcement on a full-time GM this season. Rizzo has a good shot at the position. Rival GMs say Omar Minaya is now looking to...

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports predicts whether six of the teams on the fringes of the playoff race will become buyers or sellers between now and July 31st, providing some rumors along the way: The Cardinals, who are not interested in Miguel Tejada, are tracking Mark DeRosa. Carl Pavano, Jamey Carroll and Rafael Betancourt could all become trade candidates. The Indians will only move Victor Martinez or Cliff Lee if they're overwhelmed. Rosenthal predicts the White Sox will be buyers. After all, their offense has lots of room for improvement and they're just 3.0 games behind Detroit. If the Rockies...

ESPN.com's Buster Olney says the Mets have begun discussing which hitters they want to target. Here's what Olney has heard about the Mets, along with the rest of his rumors: It's fair to assume the Mets would like to acquire a "big-time bat." Omar Minaya could pursue Nick Johnson. He already traded for him once as the GM of the Expos. Other players that could play first and hit: Aubrey Huff, Jorge Cantu, Mark DeRosa and Dan Uggla. Uggla's an outside-the-box solution, but the Mets could use his power. Don't assume the A's will be able to collect compensation picks...

It's a fantasy baseball show, but Peter Gammons discussed the trade market on ESPN's Fantasy Focus today. Here are his latest rumors: The Red Sox like Ryan Spilborghs, but the Phillies and other teams are interested, too. Plus, the Rockies are looking much better under Jim Tracy, so they're not dealing yet. The Angels have targeted Huston Street, in case the Rockies become sellers. Several teams have interest in Matt Murton. Gammons compares Eric Young Jr. to a young Chone Figgins because of his versatility. Another versatile player, Alfredo Amezaga, would interest 6-8 contenders if the Marlins shopped him, but...

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Yankees will eventually "target the best available late-inning relievers." Here are some names to watch and the rest of Rosenthal's rumors: The Yankees have already expressed interest in Huston Street. The Rockies, on an eight-game win streak, are just 4.5 games back in the NL Wild Card race and don't want to deal Street until closer to July 31st. Chad Qualls and Jose Valverde could be options for the Yankees, but both have dealt with health issues and the Yankees would have to be certain they're healthy. The Yankees could pursue Danys...
