Huston Street Rumors
By Tim Dierkes [November 11, 2009 at 12:15pm CST]
Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post has the Rockies hot stove chatter; let's take a look. GM Dan O'Dowd explained that, "There is a difference between listening and attempting to move a player." Brad Hawpe falls squarely into the "listening" category. Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports say the Rockies would probably seek a right-handed hitting outfielder and a reliever for Hawpe. New contracts for O'Dowd and manager Jim Tracy are still pending a few small details. The Rockies are trying to trade Garrett Atkins. If and when they fail, they'll release him. So rather than wait...

If you're up reading, we're up writing! MLB.com's Jim Street takes questions about the Mariners. Among other things, he believes the Mariners will find a veteran catcher to at least split time with prospect Adam Moore. Street's Baltimore counterpart, MLB.com's Spencer Fordin, believes the Orioles will move Koji Uehara to short relief and look to acquire another veteran starter. The Cleveland Plain-Dealer's Paul Hoynes has very positive things to say about Manny Acta, the new Indians' manager. Manny Corpas looks strong in Instructional League play, according to Thomas Harding of MLB.com, and Corpas will play winter ball as well. A...

More Rockies hot stove info... Free agent starter Jason Marquis told MLB.com's Thomas Harding he'd love to return to the Rockies, but "the ball's in their court." Last month, Marquis downplayed an assertion from his friend Jeff Francoeur that the pitcher would love to come to New York. It was a different market, but Marquis' agent snagged his client a three-year, $21MM deal coming off a 6.02 ERA season back in December of '06. 2009 was a typical Marquis season aside from an increased groundball rate. We already knew the Rockies had designs on locking up closer Huston Street, who's...

Troy E. Renck of The Denver Post reports that the Rockies have told closer Huston Street that they will discuss a multi-year deal with him after their final game. Renck estimates that it will require a three-year deal in the range of $25MM to "get discussions going." Last year, the Rockies avoided going to arbitration with Street by signing him to a one-year deal worth $4.5MM. This time around, the 26-year-old is entering his final year of arbitration and is in line to make something in the neighborhood of $7MM for 2010. Over the last three seasons, Street has registered...

This winter marks the last time that Colorado closer Huston Street will be eligible for arbitration. In today's Denver Post, Troy E. Renck implores the Rockies to skip the arbitration session and lock the 26-year-old up in a multi-year agreement. Back in January, the Rockies avoided going to arbitration with Street by inking him to a one-year deal worth $4.5MM. Renck feels that Street is in line to make at least $7MM in 2010. Using the negotiations that Colorado had with closer Brian Fuentes nearly a year ago as a reference point, he sees Dan O'Dowd offering a deal which...

Jon Heyman of SI.com lists his mid-season award winners, led by Albert Pujols and Joe Mauer. Here are Heyman's latest rumors: Huston Street alone is worth more on the trade market than Matt Holliday. Dan O'Dowd must be happy with his return, which also included Carlos Gonzalez. Jhonny Peralta, Kerry Wood and Carl Pavano are all available. Indians GM Mark Shapiro believes he can still get a fair return for Cliff Lee if he deals him a year from now, a few months before the lefty is scheduled to become free agent. One executive says the Royals are "pushing" Brian...

One more roundup of links for the night... George. A. King III of The New York Post mentions that the Pirates had two scouts watch the Yankees earlier this week, possibly in advance of a deal involving lefty reliever John Grabow. He mentions that the Dodgers and Rockies had scouts on hand as well. The Yanks have already expressed interest in Huston Street earlier this season. King also says that the Yanks refuse to talk about prospects Austin Jackson and Austin Romine in trade talks according to other organizations. Peter Schmuck of The Baltimore Sun recaps the first half of...

On this date back in 2003, Johnny Damon hit a single, a double, and a triple in a 14-run first inning against the Marlins. The Red Sox set a league record by scoring ten runs before making an out. On to the linkage... Matthew Pouliot of Circling The Bases says that Dayton Moore's moves over the last season and a half are enough to warrant his dismissal. He notes they have a more than qualified replacement already in-house in senior advisor Mike Arbuckle. Ben Bolch of The LA Times notes that Jason Schmidt threw 104 pitches over 7.2 shutout in...

Some links to peruse as we await the baseball equivalent of the Shaq trade... MLB.com's Bill Ladson reports that Ronnie Belliard isn't sure if he'll play another season. Mark DeRosa tops the list of infielders most likely to be traded, if you ask Matthew Pouliot of NBC Sports. Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post says the Rockies shouldn't deal anyone but Garrett Atkins. Huston Street believes getting traded led to a "good opportunity," according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. ESPN.com's Rob Neyer says Luis Ayala is far from irreplaceable. I'll be talking rumors on the TEAM 1380...

Some Friday evening linkage... Nick Piecoro says that if Brandon Webb's latest setback requires surgery, it would give the club pause about picking up his $8.5MM option for 2010. Paul DePodesta runs through all of the Padres' recent roster moves. Rockies reliever Manny Corpas had an MRI on his right elbow today according to Patrick Saunders. Both the team and Corpas were surprised since he has pitched effectively of late. Depending on the severity of the injury, this may impact the Rockies' decision to trade closer Huston Street. Thomas Boswell at The Washington Post says we "will see little or...
