Al Reyes Rumors
By Tim Dierkes [September 19, 2008 at 2:45pm CST]
Some random links for today... McCovey Chronicles thinks Rich Aurilia would be a nice fit for the '09 Giants. Tyler Kepner of the New York Times says the Yankees never really had to give up on Javier Vazquez. The Mets released Al Reyes; he never pitched for them. Reyes had nine saves for the Rays in April of last year, but it's mostly been downhill since then. Jason Varitek does not want to talk about 2009. It's hard to see the Red Sox offering him more than one year. RotoAuthority discusses the fantasy baseball code of honor.

Another week in the books, and we keep seeing big names moved after the July 31 non-waiver deadline. Let's look back on the past week: The Dodgers acquired Greg Maddux from the Padres for two minor league players to be named later. Nice acquisition to bolster their rotation, and does anyone want to place bets on how excited 20-year-old Clayton Kershaw is to get tips from Maddux every day for the rest of the season? The Pirates are exploring the idea of trading Jack Wilson this offseason more and more. Given the slim free agent market for shortstops, he would...

Round three from the MLBiverse... The Red Sox have signed former Astros outfielder Jason Lane to a minor league deal. Troy E. Renck says that Willy Taveras could be moved this winter and speculates that the Nationals might be a good fit if Lastings Milledge is moved from center field. Paul Sullivan says the Cubs are not likely to make many changes this winter with only four key free agents. One of those free agents, Ryan Dempster, said that he would prefer to stay with the Cubs. Omar Minaya says Al Reyes turned down a major league job with another...

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets have signed reliever Al Reyes. He's earning $2.3MM this year, most of which the Rays are covering. Reyes, 38, posted a 4.37 ERA in 22.2 innings this year along with decent peripheral stats. Reyes missed time this year with biceps tendinitis and a shoulder impingement, and also made the news for an April bar fight. Solid signing for the Mets; it's not hard to envision Reyes picking up a few saves.

Let's kick things off with a link roundup. River Ave. Blues wonders about Derek Jeter's future with the Yankees. The Yanks don't have to deal with it until after the 2010 season. Reliever Al Reyes is now a free agent. The 38 year-old still has a bit left in the tank. Baseball America's Jim Callis lists the draft's best coups. Curt Schilling is leaning toward retirement. If he does come back, here is a reminder of the 12 teams he was willing to play for last year aside from the Red Sox: Indians, Tigers, Angels, Mets, Phillies, Braves, Dodgers, Padres,...

Here's a quick look back at some of the bigger stories on MLBTR over the past week: D'Backs ace Dan Haren signed a very affordable extension with the team, which would keep him in Arizona through 2012 with an option for 2013. Great deal for the D'Backs and their fans. Brian Giles was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox, which is now believed to have been an effort to block the Rays from acquiring him. Giles blocked the trade to Boston with his no-trade clause. The Rockies acquired Livan Hernandez from the Twins. Minnesota won't receive a player in...

Last night, veteran Al Reyes was DFA'd by the Tampa Bay Rays to make room for Chad Bradford. Reyes is 38 and has a 4.37 ERA (actually a touch better than last year's mark of 4.90). He's had two stints on the DL this year, and has had a 5.14 ERA in 8 games since last being activated. Reyes said he needs to get the ball more than "every four or five days" to stay consistent, but also said he wasn't surprised by the move. He's making 2.3MM this year. The Rays have 10 days to make a move. I'm...

I recently named the St. Petersburg Times' Marc Topkin as Rumor Royalty for the Rays. He was kind enough to answer a few questions for the site. MLBTR: Who gets more saves in '08, Troy Percival or Al Reyes? Is there any chance the Rays shop Reyes now? Topkin: Percival will get most of the save opportunities, probably all except when he needs a day off. Reyes could be traded, but I think Wheeler is more likely to go. (Unless one of them learns how to pitch lefthanded!

ESPN 1000's Bruce Levine suggested yesterday that the Cubs were preparing an offer for Carl Crawford. However, team officials told Roger Mooney today that there's nothing brewing. Apparently the rumor was Rich Hill, Eric Patterson, and a prospect for Crawford. That doesn't seem sufficient anyway. There was even some talk of a three-way deal involving the Brewers and Yankees, which was from Gotham Baseball. According to Mooney, none of it is for real. You be the judge. In other Rays news, they picked up Al Reyes' $2.3MM option and passed on Greg Norton at $1MM. No surprises there. UPDATE: Reyes..

It was established yesterday that the Mariners are after Devil Rays reliever Al Reyes, desiring a young catcher in return. Naturally, we raised Jeff Clement's name. Today U.S.S. Mariner comments on that idea, saying that Clement for Reyes has legs. Needless to say they don't like the idea. I agree - it would be a steal for the Rays. As noted yesterday, Reyes hasn't been effective since mid-June

Recent reports had indicated that Tampa Bay closer Al Reyes was off the market. Maybe those were false, or maybe the Dan Wheeler acquisition has increased the Rays' willingness to listen. At any rate, interest is growing in Reyes. Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times notes the Mariners' interest; they had two scouts at Tropicana Field yesterday. Reyes did not pitch, however. One of those scouts was Norm Charlton on a special assignment. Topkin seems to imply that the Rays would want young catcher Jeff Clement in return for Reyes. He also alludes to the Mets' interest but believes..

Pretty much the same old story with the Mets, though Joel Sherman and Mark Hale of the New York Post do have some new tidbits. The authors name Chad Cordero, Jon Rauch, Octavio Dotel, and Eric Gagne as relievers on the radar. However it seems the asking price is too high for Gagne and the Indians have become the frontrunner for Dotel (they may have passed the Dodgers). Shawn Chacon doesn't catch the Mets' eye, and they don't want Chad Bradford's three-year commitment. They had that option with Bradford this winter. I think that logic is silly - Bradford's pitched..

Will Carroll has the scoop on which relievers the Tigers may be chasing: The Tigers are also after a reliever, but they're not willing to give up much, knowing that Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney are coming back. All rumors involving the Tigers seem to be centered on Kyle Farnsworth, but they've also looked at Rauch, and asked about Jason Isringhausen and Al Reyes. Between getting guys back and being in the catbird seat in the AL Central with postseason odds around 86%, it seems likely to me that the Tigers stand pat. After all, that seems to be what..

Apparently the Mariners have some interest in twice-demoted Yankees starter Kei Igawa, according to an uncited TV report. The report pleased Ichiro Suzuki and Kenji Johjima. Igawa is locked up through 2011, which may or may not be a positive. He earns another $1.5MM this year plus $4MM annually through the end of the contract. The posting fee situation ensures that Igawa's salary is really cheap, the price a team might pay for a semi-utility guy like Mark DeRosa. If Igawa can be league average in the comfy confines of Safeco, he's a bargain. More likely he'd have value to..

The authority on all trade rumors, Ken Rosenthal has spoken. Let's review. As we have heard before, the Dodgers like Adam Dunn. We've also discussed the fact that there's not a clear place to put him. Whether you go with first base or left field, a veteran must move. The Padres like Dunn as well but talks have yet to occur. The Angels may have liked him in the past but they don't seem likely at this point. And the Twins? They just won't break the bank for him unfortunately. With Michael Barrett having issues with 40% of the Cubs'..

Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press has the trade chatter surrounding the Tigers. The first issue is the bullpen, which is having all sorts of problems. Joel Zumaya is out for three months after finger surgery, Fernando Rodney has been on the DL with biceps tendinitis, Jose Mesa predictably bombed, and Todd Jones has struggled recently. Logically, the Tigers are scouring the trade market for relief pitching. They still might sign Troy Percival. The main competition there seems to be the Phillies. Morosi also indicates that a trade could be worked out with the Rangers for Eric Gagne..

The Red Sox picked up 35 year-old right-handed reliever Brendan Donnelly from the Angels for Phil Seibel. Donnelly's control slipped significantly last season, but he's had an excellent career despite a late start. He can help. Seibel, a southpaw, turns 28 in January. He was unhittable across three minor league levels for the Red Sox this year. The Red Sox also added J.C. Romero as a LOOGY option. The D-Rays signed Al Reyes to a one-year deal. You may recall he was a fantastic reliever for the Cards in '05 before succumbing to TJ surgery. He already threw a few..
