Richie Sexson Rumors

Week In Review: 8/10 - 8/16

Taking a look back at this week's happenings here on MLBTR... The biggest move of the month was the Diamondbacks' acquisition of slugger Adam Dunn for Dallas Buck, Micah Owings, and Wilkin Castillo. I can't remember any August trades of this magnitude. Bronson Arroyo told the media Dunn would be seeking over $100MM this offseason; Dunn denied the report wholeheartedly. I'd be surprised to see him get $100MM, but I also certainly don't think it would be the worst signing we've seen in the past few offseasons. The Red Sox acquired Paul Byrd from the Indians. Boston will pay the...   Continue Reading

Richie Sexson Released

The New York Post writes of a minor shakeup for the Yankees. They're cutting Richie Sexson and demoting Melky Cabrera to the minors in favor of Brett Gardner and Cody Ransom. Sexson received 35 plate appearances from the Yankees, hitting .250/.371/.393. He did what he was supposed to do, hitting .273/.393/.455 against lefties.   Continue Reading

Week in Review

Another week in the history books! Here's a look back from July 13-19: The Phillies acquired Joe Blanton from the A's for a package of three minor leaguers: Adrian Cardenas, Josh Outman, and Matthew Spencer. Cardenas and Outman were the Phils' #2 and #4 prospects. Personally, that seems like a lot to bring a pitcher who's already struggling to a much smaller park. Blanton is a much better pitcher than he's showed this season, however. Francisco Rodriguez will test the free-agent market this offseason. I don't think anyone would be surprised to see K-Rod sign a record-setting contract for a...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Yankees, Manny, Bowden, Pudge

SI.com's Jon Heyman has a new column up. Given Richie Sexson's expected part-time role, the Yankees are in the market for an everyday outfielder to replace Hideki Matsui's bat. Barry Bonds is not under consideration. Heyman tosses out names such as Matt Holliday, Xavier Nady, Jason Bay, and Adam Dunn, while noting that the price on most is too high (the Pirates deny this). Heyman is still saying the Cardinals will consider trading Colby Rasmus, despite various denials. The Yanks are also looking to add a #3-4 starter type. Here's a look at the market. Manny Ramirez probably isn't going...   Continue Reading

Yankees To Sign Richie Sexson

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Yankees reached a tentative agreement with first baseman Richie Sexson. The idea is that Sexson will improve the team's performance against left-handed pitching. There's little risk, so you can't blame Brian Cashman for the move. However, it should be noted that Sexson didn't hit lefties much in 2006-07 and only faced them 70 times this year. By the way, the Yankees aren't interested in Barry Bonds.   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Sexson, K-Rod, Halladay

Random links for the day... We'll have our weekly live chat here today at 2pm CST. R.J. Anderson of DRays Bay writes the Rays Comprehensive Trade Post. Brian Cashman confirmed interest in Richie Sexson. Danny Knobler quotes Francisco Rodriguez as saying that the Angels offered him three years, $34MM in November. Josh Hamilton called all his friends to tell them he was a Cub, then had to call them all back. People in Pedro Alvarez's neighorhood expect him to sign. Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay wants to see the team make some progress. Viva El Birdos would like to see...   Continue Reading

Week in Review

Here's a look back at the biggest stories MLBTR covered for the week of July 6 - 13: The Brewers completed a deal for C.C. Sabathia, sending Matt LaPorta and other prospects to Cleveland in return. Sabathia's looked great so far, and LaPorta's already making an impact in the Indians minor league system. Looks good for both teams right now if you ask this guy. The Cubs answered their division rival quickly, landing Oakland ace Rich Harden along with Chad Gaudin in exchange for Matt Murton, Sean Gallagher, Eric Patterson, and Josh Donaldson. Harden was brilliant in his debut. I...   Continue Reading

Olney's Latest: Sexson, Ibanez, Ortiz

Buster Olney's blog post is overloaded with rumors today. Here's a rundown: Olney's Speculation: Will the Red Sox will express interest in Khalil Greene with Julio Lugo on the DL for 4-6 weeks? Olney also wonders if the Dodgers will seek Huston Street if Takashi Saito is seriously hurt. Scout Speculation: Huston Street and Matt Murton to the Rays for prospects? Bobby Kielty was granted release by the Red Sox. Richie Sexson could decide where to go based on greatest offered playing time. I'd say that's expected for a veteran starter. Olney says that requests for Max Scherzer are keeping...   Continue Reading

Yankees Roundup: Nady, Sexson, Fuentes, Marte

Over the next 10 days, the Yankees will determine whether they are buyers or sellers. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, if they think they are still in it then they will target "a lefty reliever and a secondary starting pitcher." That starting pitcher could be Eric Milton, however he's 6 weeks away from starting. I'll add a right handed bat to that list as the Yankees need help against lefties. Sherman says the Rockies are interested enough in Ian Kennedy to deal Brian Fuentes for him and the Yankees will need to choose both whether they're...   Continue Reading

Yankees Considering Sexson?

From Joel Sherman of the New York Post: The Yankee problems against lefty pitching are so dire that they will meet in the next day or so to determine whether to make a play for Richie Sexson, Hardball has learned. The Yankees have a .729 OPS against southpaws this year, which ranks 7th in the American League. Sexson has a 1.045 OPS against lefties this year, but it's only been 70 plate appearances. He was nothing special against lefties in 2006-07. Peter Abraham offers his take on the idea of signing Sexson over at his blog.   Continue Reading

Mariners Release Richie Sexson

In a long-awaited move, the Mariners released first baseman Richie Sexson today. They'll eat about $6MM in salary for the rest of the year. Sexson, 33, is hitting .218/.315/.381 in 292 plate appearances this year. Perhaps someone could pick him up as a lefty-masher; he's fared well against them this year (not so much in 2006-07 though).   Continue Reading

Selling Off The Mariners

So it's been a bit Mariners heavy today at MLBTR. It makes sense, though. They currently own the worst record in baseball, yet have some chips that could be valuable to contending teams. Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times takes a look at a few teams that might be interested in buying what the M's are selling. Jason Varitek is hitting poorly. Kevin Cash is doing worse. Could the Sox pick up one of the M's catchers? Baker notes that Jamie Burke could catch Tim Wakefield and probably hit better than Cash. Or, what about Kenji Johjima? Baker mentions that...   Continue Reading

Olney's Latest: Sabathia, Sexson

Must-read alongside your bowl of Cocoa Pebbles is Buster Olney's Saturday morning blog post: If the C.C. Sabathia trade rumors were a horse race, he writes, as of today these teams would be the favorites: Milwaukee Brewers Chicago Cubs Los Angeles Dodgers Texas Rangers Boston Red Sox The problem is, he notes, some of these teams may or may not be in contention by the trade deadline; and/or could be bluffing. On more serious note, all the recent managerial changes in Seattle have clouded Richie Sexson's future with the Mariners. Olney points us to Seattle Times writer Larry Stone's notebook,...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Bernazard, Sexson, Rangers

Time for another link roundup. I hadn't realized this - the Royals offered Billy Butler for Yuniesky Betancourt a few years back. The Jays acquired pitcher Jonah Bayliss for a player to be named later. Buster Olney heard that Brian Sabean doesn't like the idea of the Giants bringing in Rick Peterson. Wouldn't be fair to Dave Righetti. Ken Davidoff of Newsday says Mets VP of Development Tony Bernazard has a bad reputation. David Andriesen of the Seattle PI has a source saying the Mariners are not ready to pull the trigger Richie Sexson's release. Still seems likely though. I...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Teixeira, Liriano, Garcia, Willingham

Ken Rosenthal has a new hot stove article up. Rosenthal leads with some Mark Teixeira-Angels speculation, but admits the Braves aren't considering trading him and the Angels are content with their team. The Halos' .706 team OPS ranks 12th in the AL; something should be done. All kinds of Mariners turmoil. They could look to acquire a center fielder given the move back to right for Ichiro. Releases of Richie Sexson and Jose Vidro could be on the agenda. And chemistry problems abound, with Ichiro and Kenji Johjima at the center. The Ms might consider Chris Antonetti and David Forst...   Continue Reading

Mariners To Release Sexson

Kirby Arnold of the Everett Herald is reporting that the Mariners will release Richie Sexson, and it could happen in the next week. According to one person familiar with moves that are planned, Sexson will be let go, possibly within days. The timing is not set because the team is dealing with other personnel issues that go beyond the procedures for moving Sexson. Sexson is still due about half of his '08 salary of $14MM. This was the last year of a 4-year/$50MM deal. This move shouldn't come as a big surprise. After the firing of Bill Bavasi, the M's...   Continue Reading

Crasnick On Griffey And Dunn

Jerry Crasnick comments today on the Reds new youth movement and what that might mean for Ken Griffey Jr and Adam Dunn. Crasnick notes that it will be difficult to replace Dunn's production, but wonders if he just needs a change of scenery. Dunn does not appear to have any desire to enter negotiations on an extension and still seems to be harboring some bad feelings towards the club...Although Crasnick doesn't specifically speculate, it sounds as if the Reds would be best served trading Dunn. As for Griffey, Crasnick believes that Griffey might be willing to renegotiate his $16.5MM '09...   Continue Reading

Speculating on Sexson, Hatteberg

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times writes of "mounting speculation" about Richie Sexson's situation with the Mariners and "a growing call among fans" for Seattle to acquire recently DFA'd Scott Hatteberg from the Reds to replace him. The Mets are reportedly also in the mix for Hatteberg, who was designated on May 27. Hatteberg is 38 and hitting .173. He did, however, hit .310 last year. Sexson, only 33, is struggling to clear the Mendoza line at present. The struggle began last year when he hit .205 in 121 games. However, of his 31 hits this year, nine have been...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Delgado, Sexson, Crisp, Byrd

Ken Rosenthal has some items worth discussing in his latest Full Count video: Trade Carlos Delgado for Richie Sexson? Rosenthal doesn't see why not. They're both in walk years, neither have a no-trade-clause, and they're both making roughly the same amount. I'll add to that by noting both have arguably met more success hitting in each other's league. The Indians may put Paul Byrd on the block in an effort to acquire pieces that could eventually lead to an upgrade at 2B or 3B later this season. The Indians currently have 7 capable starters in Sabathia, Carmona, Lee, Byrd, Westbrook,...   Continue Reading

On The Hot Seat: Giambi, Hafner, Sexson, Timlin

I love lists, and here's one from Peter Abraham at The Journal News that details who he thinks is in the hot seat. In other words, who might be traded or released if current trends continue. There are a number of managers and GMs on the list, but we like to focus on players here. I'm going to go through the list and take stabs-in-the-dark whether a player is likely to be dealt or if they're just fluff for Mr. Abraham's article - and then we can discuss in the comments. Jason Giambi - An announcer this year said that...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Ponson, Inge, Papelbon

Let's round up some Monday morning links. The Cardinals are taking another look at Sidney Ponson. Insert your own punchline in the comments. Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun could see the O's making a minor trade for a veteran second baseman if they acquire Ronny Cedeno but not Eric Patterson in a Brian Roberts deal with the Cubs. Brandon Inge is trying his best to talk his way out of town. The Dodgers' recently reported nibble hasn't been publicly shot down, so that's a plus. South Side Sox thinks speedy infielder Eugenio Velez is the type of player the...   Continue Reading

Mariners May Lock Up Several Players

I noticed a John Hickey article from three days ago that hasn't been mentioned here at MLBTR. Hickey notes that the Mariners like to sign players to extensions during spring if possible. He assesses the chances of extensions for Felix Hernandez, Erik Bedard, Kenji Johjima, Raul Ibanez, and Richie Sexson in the article. Johjima, Ibanez, and Sexson are all set to reach free agency after the '08 season. Johjima seems the most likely to stay, though prospect Jeff Clement may be close to big league ready. Sexson is as good as gone, while the decision on Ibanez will likely hinge...   Continue Reading

Giants Rumors: Lincecum, Tejada, Sexson

Andrew Baggarly gives his take on the Giants hot stove buzz. One Reds official think the Giants almost have to trade Tim Lincecum to build an offensive core. It seems the Mariners and Reds in particular are pushing for Lincecum. The Ms could offer Adam Jones; the Reds have Jay Bruce, Joey Votto, and Josh Hamilton. The Mariners could've had Lincecum with the fifth overall pick in 2006, but opted for Brandon Morrow instead. The Reds could've had him too but went for Drew Stubbs. The Giants and Orioles discussed Miguel Tejada, and the O's like players such as Jonathan..   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Feliz, Nathan, Sexson

UPDATE, 12-3-07 at 6:04pm: Update on Richie Sexson: no one wants him, not even the Giants. FROM 12-3-07 at 1:55pm: More Rosenthal, let's cut to the chase. The Cardinals could look at Pedro Feliz at third base if they trade Scott Rolen. Rosenthal is too kind in saying the Cards would have a "sub-par offense on the left side of the infield." Rosenthal also suggests the Cardinals could take a look at Hank Blalock. Hiroki Kuroda isn't dead set on the West Coast - he's keeping an open mind in terms of location. The Twins are discussing Joe Nathan with..   Continue Reading

Mariners Listening On Sexson

Mariners first baseman Richie Sexson hit a painful .205/.295/.399 last year. He's got one more year on his contract at $14MM, and most feel that he can't help but be better in 2008. Mariners GM Bill Bavasi recently acknowledged that some teams have inquired about Sexson. According to the link above, one option could be swapping Sexson for another supposed bad contract, Vicente Padilla. Padilla makes $11MM in '08, $12MM in '09, and has a $12MM club option for 2010 with a $1.75MM buyout. So he has $24.75MM guaranteed left on his contract. Padilla had an injury-plagued year but at..   Continue Reading

Rangers Rumors: DeJesus, Lamb, Millar

Evan Grant writes for the Dallas Morning News, but he posted this column at night. Go figure. He's got some new info regarding the Rangers. As you know, the Rangers have had difficulty finding a long-term center fielder. That's the main focus of this offseason. The team has already shown interest in Torii Hunter and Aaron Rowand, the top center fielders available. Other free agents such as Andruw Jones and Mike Cameron appear to be in play as well. Grant's trade candidates: Coco Crisp, David DeJesus, Mark Kotsay, and Carlos Beltran. We've speculated on DeJesus to Atlanta in the past...   Continue Reading

More Mariners Info

I just learned that Larry LaRue of the Tacoma News Tribune has his own blog. Here's some recent info from him to complement our Mariners Needs and Luxuries post. Regarding that starter they need to add this winter...how about Johan Santana? LaRue had a post a couple of weeks ago indicating the Twins have scouted the Mariners and would start the discussion with Adam Jones. With a negotiating window, it's something the Ms would have to consider. Santana and Felix Hernandez fronting the rotation would get all of Venezuela tuning in for 40% of Mariners games. LaRue seemingly takes a..   Continue Reading

Will Mariners Finally Move Sexson?

Call it educated speculation, but U.S.S. Mariner is wondering whether the Ms will try to trade Richie Sexson this winter. Derek Zumsteg suggests that recent vibes put out by the team's broadcast crew may portend a future trade of Sexson or even Jose Lopez. Even more interesting to me is the note that the Mariners "could have let Detroit pick [Sexson] up on waivers." We learned back in August that Sexson was claimed off waivers but withdrawn. It puzzled us at the time, because most GMs would be dying to unload Sexson's $14MM for 2008. Anyway this is the first..   Continue Reading

Stark On Waiver Happenings

Jayson Stark's column today was a goldmine of waiver-related material. I updated my Players Who Have Cleared Waivers post with his new info. Two thoughts from that group: I was surprised to see that no one wanted a piece of Troy Glaus's contract, which really isn't scary at $24MM over 2008-09 (assuming he exercises his player option). I'm sure his no-trade clause would've been a pricey obstacle, but what's the harm in making a claim? Why would the Angels, Phillies, and Dodgers pass on him? Maybe clubs talked to J.P. Ricciardi and decided it just wasn't worth it. And to..   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Sexson, Dye

I feel bad for Ken Rosenthal's family, as they won't be seeing much of him until August 1st. He's got another update for us tonight. The Mariners are hoping to unload Richie Sexson; can you blame them? To trade for Sexson now would be insane, even with the Ms eating half of the $14MM he's owed in 2008. He has shown almost no signs of life this season. Rosenthal suggests a Sexson for Matt Morris swap but I'd much rather have Morris. The Brewers have considered the possibility of a Jermaine Dye trade. Kenny Williams apparently wants Derrick Turnbow or..   Continue Reading

Richie Sexson Could Be Dealt

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that the Mariners may consider trading Richie Sexson, a move that would please many Mariner fans. The Ms would presumably acquire a pitcher in the deal and move Raul Ibanez to first base. John Hickey mentions Noah Lowry, Tim Hudson, and Dontrelle Willis as possible targets. U.S.S. Mariner has a bunch of winter meeting predictions for Seattle; check it out   Continue Reading
