Ben,
Congrats on the "promotion" and congrats on the "promotion" to you too, Tim.
Anyway, Ben and everyone, who do you think goes first? If I bet money, I say Bedard. A few reasons as to why are Peavy has a NTC, and has showed he doesn't plan on waving it unless its a "perfect" deal. Halladay's team, the Blue Jays, are still rite there in the AL East, and with a big bat, they will be real contenders. He'd command alot along with Peavy, whereas, unlike reported, Bedard shouldn't require much.

At 6.5 games back, I wouldn't be surprised to see the M's wait for at least a few weeks to see if they have another run in them. It would be tough to pass up the chance to contend in the AL West this year. But I can see Bedard getting dealt before Peavy.

The Blue Jays offense was all hot at the same time, now that they've cooled down, there's almost no way they can keep up with the Red Sox and Yankees, especially if the Yankees play more juggernaut baseball like they have been.

What about the Adam Kennedy/Joe Dillon trade?
Posted by: Twins777 | June 01, 2009 at 11:33 AM
The current situation with Bedard is the M's are disillusioned on what they should get back in a trade considering how much they gave up to get him. He isn't worth what the Orioles got and he's worth less now with free agency approaching.

Actually, we are not. Bedard has no clause in his contract that he can reject a trade. His numbers to now have been way better than most pitchers that are currently out there. Now we are willing to concede the fact that we will not get back what we lost. But we do know that we can get 2 good players in a trade for Bedard. Now for his worth... That portion I think your disillusioned on this. He is currently 3-2 with a 2.48 era WHIP 1.12. Now if you compare them to his peers....
Peavy 5-5 3.67 era Whip 1.13
Oswalt 1-2 4.62 era Whip 1.25
Just on number his are better than both Peavy and Oswalt. Peavy and Oswalt are considered Aces. Now, the comparison above is only based on the trade rumors that I have heard about in recent days. But out of those 3 Bedard clearly has his stuff back and is on to prove that he can. If we dont trade Bedard, thats fine with me. But dont try to tell me that he isnt worth much.

You are correct, Bedard is worth something. The M's won't get what you gave up for Bedard. I doubt we will see such a trade you made for that one anytime soon. This helped lead to your removal from the GM job. Any thoughts on dumping Beltre? He didn't help your cause, either. Then again, the AL West is wide open.

Bedard 9 GS 3-2 2.48 ERA 1.12 WHIP 54 Ks 3.60 K/BB
Peavy 11 GS 5-5 3.67 ERA 1.13 WHIP 84 Ks 3.50 K/BB
Oswalt 11 GS 1-2 4.62 ERA 1.25 WHIP 47 Ks 2.76 K/BB
That doesn't even account for the fact that Bedard has 2 fewer starts than the others and that Bedard faces a DH every time through the lineup rather than a pitcher

You guys here at MLBTR should have this type of post at the end of each month.

Bedard's durability is probably a concern. I think a perennial contender like the White Sox are willing to take on the extra dollars, years, and give up extra prospects for Peavy or Oswalt, in return for guaranteed 200+ IP per season. Of course, Peavy could blow out his arm tomorrow, but it's less likely than with Bedard.
Then again they might look at Harden for the Cubs last year and decide to take the risk anyway.

Do you think the economy will lead to less trading this year? It will be hard for some teams to take on money. Seems like there was less trading this past winter - I would expect that to carry over to July.

what about the Church-Francoeur trade?
Posted by: johan is GOD | July 21, 2009 at 08:58 PM
Contrary to what the Braves fan posted, the Jays are most certainly NOT in contention (and weren't even when he made his post in early June). And at this point, it's clear that their front office just wants to his the RESET button and completely revamp their roster.
